We need to do a whole lot more than cry. Remain active, participate in protests if you are able, donate if you can, contact local media over and over and demand the run stories about how maga is hurting your community, challenge people of faith, at least those who call themselves Christians to stand up for the words of Jesus and feed the hungry, welcome the stranger, heal the sick and love one another, hold town halls on your own if it is safe...let your neighbors know they are not alone, the good guys are in this together.

I have to shop at Walmart. Well sort of...I live in a rural area and the next closest store is about 65 miles away. But I pretty much only buy groceries and health needs there. I did recently buy the cheapest bras I could find....the first ones I've bought in over 15 years (too much sharing) and I probably could have gone on longer with what I had but other than that I really try to stick to things I think I need to have (marmalade for my toast is not a necessity, butter is, coffee is (even though it really isn't) but I've switched to instant. I'm on a relatively low income and have to be careful where and how I spend my money so ordering things on line is often more costly. And then even though I sort of hate my maga neighbors (I'm in a 100% maga area) they are my neighbors and Walmart is a big employer here so I help keep them employed. It does seem like the boycotting of Target has made a difference so maybe the boycotting of Amazon will also make a difference. But even if it doesn't make a difference, I think we should all do it the best we can. Pretty soon there will be sort of natural boycotts as all of us non billionaires will have less to spend due to out h igher taxes and tariffs.

Agree, somewhat, but it does get their attention. And, in the interim, many people find shopping at alternate sources to be a much better experience. I, for one, have totally stopped shopping at Target since their boycott happened. Don't miss it at all. Other options for HD still exist.

It still helps because they need to see our NUMBERS, just like with protests. Politicians pay immediate attn to new polling numbers; those numbers matter. They also pay attn to the phone calls they receive; those matter. You can't tell me Home Depot doesn't watch their sales numbers on MORE than a monthly basis. Every effort matters.

Member of the Maple Meidas here - boycotting is a great way to not feed the corporations that fund these politicians. I've stopped shopping from Amazon since January; no Walmart; and focusing on Canadian companies and Canadian products. I've read a stat that in Canada, even spending $20 at a local farmers market each week can help generate $130 million into local farmers and products in our province. So now I go to a local farm market each week for my produce and fruit.

As noted by two other people it is difficult to avoid corporations, especially in rural areas.

But think about it: what items can you buy that are not sold from a greedy corporation?

I didn't have high speed internet in my rural area until Musk's Starlink became available. I had to drive 30 minutes into town to use the library's high speed internet. In my area, we have one hardware store - corporate owned, most everything made in China. It's small and well-stocked but we still have order some things online from Amazon. Our privately owned building supply store closed, unable to compete with Home Depot, 60 minutes away. We have one small grocery store, owned by Kroger in my village and two next closest stores, one owned by Kroger and the other by Safeway. We have one small Walmart which offers the lowest prices on mostly unhealthy food and it is where the poorest in my region shops.

Each one of these corporations participate in the politial system by donating money to PACS for both sides. They seek less regulation on labor laws, some engage in social prejudice and all of them want to avoid paying a fair share of taxes. Corporate America owns rural America and while its easy to write about boycotting, it's simply not a reality for the underpaid, the elderly and the rural communities.

I do support my local food producers by buying meat, vegetables and fruit from them. Most importantly, I have greatly reduced my consumption. I just bought several pieces of new clothing: organic cotton & linen, made in America using certified fair labor. Six items cost $550. This will be my only clothing purchase for the year.

I'm in the same boat sometimes the only way I can get something is to order it from Amazon but I've quit anything else and told the kids for birthdays, Christmas or whatever I'm not giving them any thing, but rather cash for an experience of their choice (for the girls that usually something like a pedicure or eating out so they don't have to cook). I hate doing that as I've always enjoyed listening to things they say all year and getting them something special based on some comment they made, but I refuse to support Amazon unless I have to.

Stay strong and if you can, convince your neighbors and friends to become part of the resistance! I don't know if the polls were accurate but many said young Black men contributed a lot to trump's win and if that's' true maybe we can turn that around if we ever have elections again,, along with the Muslims. Miami Florida just voted to not have upcoming elections (not the voters, they had no say, the GOP City Council) and they know that will go to the SC and they know the SC will side with them and say, no, in America we don't need to have elections anymore.

Expand full comment
Janet Wilson's avatar

I cannot believe that in America anyone publicly called for an end to elections. If the SC upheld that position, it would truly be the end of the Republic and all for which it stands.

When did gerrymandering become acceptable? Or voter suppression? Ending elections is the logical progression but surely it would ignite a civil war? At least 66% of America did NOT vote for this.

Expand full comment
Pat Robinson's avatar

I agree, pretty surprising that they called for it, even more alarming they passed it without the approval of the voters. What I read is that they are planning for it to go to the SC so the SC can rule that if there are certain conditions (which will be ones trump can satisfy) we can postpone elections. Now I don't know what they will do if no one challenges the rule in Florida and it doesn't go anywhere. I guess they will have to have one of trump's toadies challenge it. I don't know how far Americans will let the dictator take over.

Thank you for your support, Jean in the Netherlands. It means so much to hear the perspective from people around the world who are on the outside looking in. Because, when you see what is going on here and then take the time to let us what you see, it helps validate what those of us who are not in "the cult" already know in our hearts to be true. Otherwise, seeing it with my own eyes would cause me to doubt my own sanity. In that regard, I have almost given into despair due to the Republicans passage on July 1st of the "murder" bill, as Ben Meiselas of the MeidasTouch Network calls it. The America I was born into almost 79 years ago no longer exists. I am in good health physically, though mentally, I am not as well. Vibrant communities like this, Miami, NYC, and other Latino communities are part of the flavor of America and trump is trying to kill it and make it as depressing as his golf courses.

We need to continue standing up, protesting peacefully against this tyrannical regime and pointing out things like their concentration camps in Florida are not what our American values are. We are better than this, we are not Nazi Germany.

Except the causative factors differ. We all know WW1 was a totally unnecessary war, but Germany had major economic issues following it (as many did) on top of trying to run a government on a system they were not so used to yet. Most Germans had lived under a monarchy. Then, they had multiple parties and didn't know what to do with them. A strong person who made lots of promises naturally fit right in. We, in the US, continue to struggle because we have never fully dealt with the founding precepts of our nation. It was created to care for the property of rich, white men, on the backs of indentured servants, slaves, and non-property owning people. Slavery is ingrained into the American ideal, and we have never truly faced that fact. Just compromised and bumbled out way forward, always pretending we had fixed things. As long as we are not honest with ourselves, we will never be able to climb out of the hole we've dug ourselves into.

Führer tRump has launched the initial stages of genocide in America! Everyday for over three years soldiers in Ukraine have been risking their lives and dying to protect their democracy. Families in Gaza are being denied access to food, clean water, medical care or anyone to defend them. Mothers and Fathers are literally watching their children intentionally starved to death. All so the Israeli and US dictators can turn Gaza into a resort town for billionaires. It is not possible to believe in God and support dictators. Shamefully, many Americans are just sitting back watching our democracy crash all around us. Most aren't even aware that the beginning stages of genocide have begun in the USA. Our civil rights are already disappearing. The least we woke Americans can do, is encourage everyone we know, to learn and talk about the resistance, boycott a few billionaire businesses and show up at some peaceful protests!!! The tRump is the leader of the American White Supremacists. When he exposes his hate he unleashes the hate in his entire regime of MAGAts and through the world. I know this first hand because he has unleashed the hate in me. I hate this mother fuckin rapist, racist white supremacist, homegrown treasonous, felonious criminal, crazy ass demented demonic, destructor of democracy, idiotic, imbecile TACO Dick Traitor. I told you that I am filled with hate. There are still too many haters in this country and yes I am one of them. I have been able to control it and I hope I will again someday! The hate is passed down from generation to generation. I was able to end this in my family but not in myself.

My father, who was not black, was a racist. He hated white people because of the way they have historically treated everyone else. Dad's voice has always lived inside my head, spewing his hate. I used his voice to remind me, not to let my kids grow up that way.

I told my children that everyone is good and everyone is bad. Some are more good, some are more bad. But you will never know who is good and who is not until you get a chance to know them. Until you give them a chance to know you. My kids know that you can't tell, the good from the bad, by the way they look. They were taught to take the side of the underdog. I taught them not to let the bad kids influence them. They learned that they didn't need bad kids in their lives no matter how popular they seemed to be. They knew that I would always stand by and advocate for them.

I was shocked by the number of adults who are still afraid to go to the principal's office, even on behalf of their own children. So my kids learned that we are all equal regardless of our status. That the principal, doctors, officers and even the President work for us. We choose them to lead, care, teach and keep us safe! My kids know that we pay them to work for us.

Führer tRump is destroying all of this for the next generation. For the first time, I am glad to know that I will never be a grandmother. Never in my life have I felt so much hate. My Dad's angry voice bitchin about white trash is louder than it has ever been before. I know you can't judge a book by it's cover. I know not all white people are bad but I can't help feeling that - DADDY WAS RIGHT!

The racists, white supremacists, the evil MAGAts, the greedy Oligarchs and wannabe oligarchs. They have come out of the shadows and walk openly upon the earth. They know El tRump will protect them! Some of them belong to the shameful tRump's Gestapo ICE Brigade. They hide their faces, don't wear uniforms, don't carry badges, don't have warrants, drive unmarked cars and the humans they pick up disappear without due process. I believe there are laws about this kind of behavior but of course the Limp Dick Traitor protects those who are evil like him. You would think that our police who have the legal authority to arrest these masked cowards (who are invading peaceful communities across the country) would be making arrests around the clock. Especially now that American citizens are silently disappearing too (see the video below). Unfortunately, we all know we have a problem with hatefilled racist Police Officers too. There must be some officers that really meant there oath to protect and serve all of us. Please real, trained, badge carrying US officials protect us all from these illegal goons posing as public servants. Arrests unidentified ICE thugs. Never be a tRump. Be kind. Be heroes!

An appalling state of affairs currently. By the way , if anyone is interested our Australian Broadcasting Commission ( ABC ) has a long running documentary series called "4 Corners". This week it was a whole program dedicated to the tariffs and how they are affecting American Citizens. Worth watching if you get a chance :)

So sorry, Ben. I’m in the UK and here we are all horrified at the actions of the crime syndicate that is ruining the USA Mafia-style. You can be sure that the Orange Toad will get a very hostile reception if he dares to come here in September. Stay strong - he will be gone!

Ben, I’m glad your wife and daughter and your wife’s family were safe. I can’t imagine living under the horrors that naturalized citizens are now living through. Thank you for your honesty, your integrity, your truth telling. I have former friends and people that I know that support the other side and say they were lied to over the last four years. But I can’t see it. I don’t understand what they were lied to about! We had the best economy, we had jobs, we had calmness in the most prestigious office in the United States. I feel like I’m living in a daily reality show that just will never end or be canceled. I have hope things will get better, I do protest when there’s a group and I pray every single day that the people who are voting for this will see the light! continue as a great work and I’ll watch you from Substack and YouTube! Thank you so much for everything!

My husband and I traveled to Holland this past summer and visited Anne Frank’s home. It was a very sobering experience. Now that I’m seeing things escalate in Los Angeles, I’m thinking I would not hesitate to hide a family in my home. I think that everyone here who cares about their neighbors needs to ask themselves that same question. What would you do to help another family stay safe?

Gimenez, born in Cuba, was our Democratic county mayor until he flipped to Trump in 2020. In 2016, he supported HRC.

His son worked in the #45 Trump administration.

He has protested about immigration.

But he reads from Republican talking points.

Allegator Alcatraz in in Rep. Mario Diaz Balart's district. He is one of 3 Cuban Amenrican House Republicans who have been protesting Trump immigration policy. We have a Democratic majority. Immigration is certainly not the only issue, but many Republicans here are conflicted.

E.G. Billionaire Miami healthcare CEO Michael “Mike” B. Fernandez wrote the following open letter to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and members of the Republican Cuban-American Miami-Dade congressional delegation: U.S. Reps. Mario Diaz-Balart, Carlos Giménez and Maria Elvira Salazar.

For decades, I have stood with you in defense of the freedoms we cherish, those we were denied in the country of our birth and found in the grace of this one. I know what it means to flee tyranny. Like you, I carry that history in my bones and that pain in my heart. But like a growing number in our community,

I have watched with dismay as the very values we once found sanctuary in are now being attacked by a previously unthinkable threat — the sitting president of the United States.

I called my R Senators yesterday to thank them for voting to kick 16 million people off of healthcare, since this will obviously make the country great again. (sarcasm) The young lady that took the call almost immediately got snippy when I asked her if she got health insurance with her job. Maybe she was tired of being verbally assaulted by constituents who have had enough. Good. Keep up the work. And email, too.

Thank you for sharing your story. This can’t end soon enough! Seeing Trump and Noem and the Florida politicians down at their new “ holding pen” made me sick at heart and sick to my stomach. The reaction and laughing at remarks about alligators as security. And Fox News people all laughing and joking. And people buying hats and T-shirts? It was like being in an alternate reality.

I live very close to Los Angeles and I watch KTLA. Every morning I see the disgusting Noem commercials. I’ve contacted KTLA a couple times asking them why they are airing this commercial in Los Angeles! Of course I have received no response. Our community is already terrified and this ad just adds fuel to the fire. My question is, how much are these networks getting paid to air these commercials!

Wow Ben! That’s a heartfelt story. My sadness lies with the children who will suffer because many in their families and communities voted against their own interest by believing the guy who is a known racist and liar…touting and bragging about mass deportation. I continue to look to God for hope that one day America will return to a place of goodness and decency for all🙏🏽

Your personal story truly pains me — that your family has to endure all of this. What worries me even more is the fear that it won’t end — that he’s strengthening his base and surrounding himself with people like Vance and others in his administration, paving the way for his sons to follow. It feels like this could go on for years if they are not stopped soon.
