I wrote this message this morning with the intention to post it after sundown, to be read this final day of Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, a time of faith and triumph of light over darkness. _______________________________________________________________________________
My grandson recently had his Bar Mitzvah. He, as others have done, needed to prepare a speech thanking parents, relatives and friends for making it a special day and including some words about his accomplishments and future goals. This kid, however, is and has been wise beyond his years, and deeply saddened by the state of our world both here and in Israel. He asked me for some help writing and to discuss those situations with him and I agreed.
His first question caught me totally off guard. "Why is our President doing so much to hurt so many people. His job is to protect and work to make our lives better." I said, "Wow, what a question, give me a minute. " Then he added, "The same with Netanyahu."
I began: Well, it seems our President has been an entitled, selfish jerk since childhood. I have a friend who knew Donald in school and will attest to that. Sometimes when you are born into money and your parents teach you how to use, misuse, abuse and even destroy others to benefit only yourself, you turn out to be a Donald J Trump. He is a thin-skinned man-child without compassion for others, without any trace of empathy toward those he harms. He thinks of himself as all-powerful and seems to enjoy the cruelty he inflicts. He truly a sociopath at this point looking for painful revenge against anyone who ever tried to hold him accountable or dare punish him for his crimes or other despicable actions in his Presidential, business and personal relationships.
He holds his office because he was a well-known personality in 2016 when he decided to run for president. He has always made big promises and he had the ability to entertain and connect with the millions of Americans who felt left behind in our economy. His election win was not by any enormous mandate. His child-like tantrums have caused the government to shut down for weeks causing irreparable harm to millions. We all lived through the world-wide Covid pandemic in February 2020. You remember being shut in at home for months, on-line classrooms, no visits with friends or family. It was horrible and made worse by our President who kept telling us it would all go away when the weather got warmer. Instead of accepting the challenge to meet the crisis head on he tried his best to make us believe we had nothing to worry about. He blamed China because he did not want to be accountable for the tens of thousands of Americans dying every week, deaths that were going to hurt his chances of reelection in the fall. His Covid response was a dismal failure. I believe up to 500,000 or half of the million+ who died would have had a chance to survive if Trump was a competent, not cowering, human being.
The same man instigated the riots at the Capitol Building in January 2021 because he refused to gracefully accept his reelection loss to Joe Biden. Many deaths and massive destruction were his fault. He has been charged with many crimes and convicted of some. He is morally defective, unwilling to accept any responsibility for his crimes or misdeeds, always blaming others. So, to sum up the answer to your question >>>. “Our flawed president is lacking any human decency characteristic and has always been focused on nothing but self-preservation and self-fulfillment no matter what the cost to others. What is going on with him today is just the metamorphosis of the boy jerk now having evolved into a full-fledged “deranged wrecking machine’.
I then added that I really don’t know much of the Netanyahu back story but I’m guessing it must be similar. Frightened narcissists and bullies always try fear, anger and violence to gain power and control.
We both decided this entire talk was not a suitable topic since so many Trumpers would be attending the services and we did not want to insult anyone before they handed my grandson their gift envelopes. His final draft thanked everyone, expressed his future plans and goals and did not rankle any feathers although we both very much wanted to.
May this day be a moment, witnessed in our time, to mark the beginning of a miracle to end the hate, the rage, the insanity, the darkness and the wanton destruction affecting so many lives. We can still pray, yes, maybe? Still legal? Let's do it!
