Everyone needs to resist the dictatorship to whatever extent they have the means and strength.

Sure, Tom, It's a “diCtAtoRsHiP.” She obstructed federal officers.

You're a troll Nate. You're obstructing truth.

She didn't obstuct anyone she just wouldn't let them disrupt the court or its proceedings. There wasn't any secret escape door for her to help him evade arrest they just needed to do it outside of the court building like the senior judge told them to.

I don't believe "Nate Ness" is human. I visited his page and he praises every wrong thing done by this administration, even while top MAGA influencers are now having doubts.

A travesty if Justice Dugan is convicted. Do not let this type of tyranny destroy the US.

She was found guilty. 😞

I feel sick. Another day, another outrage.

Very bad jury. Lawers on both sides have influence on jury selection. It sounds like the defendant's lawyer screwed up.

Sheila Weitzman's avatar

And do you honestly believe a judge should be found guilty because she protected someone who was being violated by a lawless policy carried out by masked men without identity cards

Rock Wilcox's avatar

If any party is guilty of violating the laws in this particular case, it is the ICE 'agents'; what business do they have in arresting people, especially immigrants, in a court building? And what about a warrant, signed by a judge?

trump and his MAGA Mafia lackeys are the individuals who are breaking nearly every law in the books, as well as the Constitution itself.

I am hoping for a verdict of innocence, not merely "not guilty".

Nate Ness's avatar

I am not sure, Rock, could be the guy was not legally allowed to be in the country.

DavidPageYea's avatar

Nate, bots are not "legally" allowed on substack, and you are a bot.

Sheila Weitzman's avatar

Then they should have unmasked, shown identity cards and gotten a warrant. The utter disrespect to go into a court room and their utter brutality negates anything the man might have done.

"What happens when someone with the highest duty to uphold the law decides that it doesn’t apply to her?” Watzka said, answering later. “It undermines the entire justice system.”... [adding, "Just ask President Trump and AG Bondi. They do it every day."]

Camille Kelly's avatar

I wish Judge Dugan the best and hope the jury sees through the message the trump administration is trying to send, that they are judge and jury and separation of powers doesn't apply to them. It is her courtroom and they (ICE) have no defined code of ethics.

What a disgrace to waste taxpayer money to prosecute this.

ALOHA. On the COCONUT ONE FINGER WIRELESS. ................. Pass a LAW forbidding ICE and other enforcement agency's to come anywhere near the courts......................... .........

Call your Member of Congress —

To make it easy:

Before calling, take 10 seconds to look up your lawmakers:

👉 Find your Representative and Senators: https://www.house.gov/representatives/find-your-representative

👉 Senators: https://www.senate.gov/senators/senators-contact.htm

Then call:

Senate switchboard: 202-224-3121

House switchboard: 202-225-3121

When the operator answers, say:

“Please connect me to Senator/Representative [NAME].”

Once you’re transferred, use this message:

“I’m calling to let you know I’m very disturbed by what you are doing. I’m urging the Senator/Representative to demand the Trump administration to get things done for the people of this country.

If you’ve never called Congress. It takes 30 seconds. And staffers track these calls meticulously.

It scares me to think that she may be found guilty and jailed. I am an outsider, not a US citizen, but watching this erosion of justice and decency makes me feel physically ill, so god knows what it is doing to the decent US citizens and those who shelter with them....hoping with every fibre that she is freed.

Have a hunch the jury knows this is not a small case. That they are setting precedent. They will also remember that the bar is "beyond a Reasonable doubt" and that the burden of proof is on the prosecution.

Several issues I see them weighing: Was it reasonable and lawful for the ICE agents to invade the court, making defendants, witnesses, families afraid to go to court?

Was it the judges responsibility to provide, or even assist, federal enforcement of a policy to deport ALL immigrants out of the country?

Is there any actual clear evidence what the judge said to the lawyer?

Is there any actual clear evidence what the judge intended to have happen?

Was there any actual harm done, since the ICE agents arrested the immigrant after all?

Why destroy the life of the judge when the life of the immigrant was already destroyed?

The Prosecution admitted the ICE enforcement policies were 'Controversial', so the question is legitimate to ask if that Controversial enforcement policy was actually legal, in which case, disrupting their plans more or less passively could be legal.

I agree with you, and I appreciate how carefully you’re grounding this in law rather than emotion. What’s troubling isn’t just this case, but the precedent it risks setting when the Republican Party continues to weaponize immigration enforcement to score political points regardless of due process or judicial independence.

When federal power is used to intimidate people out of courtrooms, and judges are punished for exercising discretion, that’s not “law and order” it’s political coercion. A system that claims to respect the rule of law can’t selectively abandon it when enforcement becomes inconvenient or controversial.

The bigger issue for me is this: if courts and judges can be targeted whenever they don’t align with GOP enforcement agendas, how long before the judiciary itself stops being independent in practice, not just in theory?

Douglas Gilligan's avatar

The good news, and the bad news is that the jury is the representatives of 'the people', and the people have the power. I am sure at least one person on that jury picked up the clue Dugan's lawyer dropped “It’s your decision and justice is within your hands,” Luczak said.

The number of questions here will distract from any 'black and white' jury instructions from the judge. One of the reasons we have juries is that they do NOT have to follow the law when the law is clearly wrong in a given case. It is the Jury's responsibility to dispense justice, where they prosecutor has to carry to burden of proof, beyond a reasonable doubt.

I have hope and some faith that the jury will do the right thing. Pretty sure the worst it will be is a hung jury.

Squirrels drinking red wine's avatar

I share the same cautious but genuine hope. Juries exist precisely to serve as a safeguard when the law is abused or politicized when ordinary citizens are called upon to hold the line for justice. In moments like this, as institutions come under strain, the people themselves become the last line of defense.

What troubles me is that this case doesn’t exist in isolation. For years, the Republican Party has framed “tough enforcement” and punishment as virtues, even when they clearly collide with due process and basic fairness. That political climate matters it shapes how far prosecutors feel empowered to go and how much pressure judges are expected to withstand.

So the larger question, for me, is this: as politics continues to erode our institutions, how much longer can we reasonably expect juries ordinary citizens to carry the burden of correcting systemic overreach? Is our democracy’s capacity for self-repair being stretched too thin?

Douglas Gilligan's avatar

It is certainly being stress tested. By the way, 'they' have also been pushing the idea of 'Political prosecutions' and people are starting to realize this DoJ is very political. People are starting to realize ICE is not innocent. The political climate is shifting against Trump and his minions. I still have hope.

Squirrels drinking red wine's avatar

I share your hope as well. What we’re witnessing isn’t just a stress test of a single case, but of a narrative the Republican Party has pushed for years reframing accountability as “political persecution” to shield power from scrutiny. As more people recognize that the DOJ and ICE are not operating in isolation, that narrative is beginning to crack.

The more important question is whether this shift comes in time to truly strengthen our institutions, rather than leaving us stuck in a cycle of constant damage control. I’ve really enjoyed this exchange perhaps we could follow or subscribe to one another so we can continue the conversation more meaningfully.

She is guilty. It’s really simple. If you are in the country illegally, you will be removed. And if you get in the way, jail.

DavidPageYea's avatar

It's simple to an ignorant MAGAt like yourself, just like you think multiple bankruptcy DJ Trump is a "business genius".

Kathy H's avatar

Shut up, stupid.

DavidPageYea's avatar

You've just laid out a ton of reasons why ICE behavior on the scene was the real problem, not the judge. To me this is further proof that the jury was highly corrupt, or otherwise untrustworthy.

Douglas Gilligan's avatar

Judges try real hard to make it purely about the law charged and nothing else. Juries tend to follow the judges instructions. Most people will eventually 'go along with the crowd' which is why unanimous verdicts happen as often as they do.

It is unfortunate there was not a stronger will among them, but then when selecting juries, at least one side will try to remove those from the jury.

This will be appealed. On appeals the law can be questioned.

DavidPageYea's avatar

This jury was sick and demented.
