SPEAKER 4
I'm joined by Jagmeet Singh, member of the House of Commons and leader of the NDP in the House of Commons. We've got a lot going on in Canada. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau from the Liberal Party just announced his resignation. His government was held together by an alliance, tenuous one, with the NDP.

Mr. Singh, you had called for his resignation a few weeks later. He did indeed resign. First and foremost, I want to welcome you to the Midas Touch Network. We had some other NDP members on, but welcome. Thank you so much. I'm honored and excited to be here. Thanks so much. You know,

Ben Interviews Canadian NDP Leader on Trump Threats

NDP leader Jagmeet Singh calls for unity in Canada and challenges Trump’s threats in an exclusive interview with MeidasTouch
120

Thanks to your support, MeidasTouch continues to expand its international coverage. Jagmeet Singh, leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP) in the House of Commons, didn’t mince words in an exclusive interview with MeidasTouch host Ben Meiselas when addressing Donald Trump’s recent threats against Canada.

Trump, once again referring to Canada as the “51st state” in a social media post, claimed that Canadians “would love” for the United States to annex their country. Singh dismissed these remarks as unpresidential and issued a stern warning: Canada will not be bullied.

“Donald Trump is acting more like an internet troll than a president of the United States,” Singh said. “I don’t think that’s the way you act as a president, and it’s certainly not the way you interact with other countries. I’ve dealt with bullies throughout my life, and I know what it’s like—even if you’re the smaller guy, even if you’re outnumbered—you’ve got to make it not worth the bully’s while. Bullies only understand strength and pain.”

Singh took the opportunity during his MeidasTouch interview to challenge any candidates running to become Canada’s next prime minister to commit to retaliatory tariffs if Trump imposes economic penalties on Canada. “My challenge is for anyone else out there who’s running to become prime minister: I want you to also commit so that Donald Trump knows that anyone in Canada who gets that position will respond with tariffs. That’s how you stand up to a bully.”

Singh made his thoughts about Trump’s comments clear in his closing message: “Canadians do not want to be part of the United States. We are proud of our country, our healthcare system, and our values. If you want to pick a fight with Canada, we will fight back. Retaliatory tariffs will hurt Americans too, and it’s not how you build a strong relationship. My advice? Don’t pick a fight with Canada—it’s not a fight that’s worth it.”

If California, or any other state decided to become a Canadian province, I would move there immediately. In fact, if all the blue states joined Canada, and all the "libs" moved there, we could sit back and watch as the people in red states fall into a state of poverty "like no one's ever seen before."

Many are also less intelligent. History, civics , grammar , vocabulary, reading comprehension & writing are not being taught at optimum levels and this is the fault of both extremes. The removal of the Department of Education would exacerbate this, especially for those with learning disabilities. Additionally, some Southern states want to end the separation of church & state. Critical thinking is waning & that is part of the reason we are in this mess.

Our teachers are not paid well or supported in the class room. Yes we hear this often, the teachers end up buying supplies for their kids & also deal with the children who are struggling with reading learning issues, which can be exasperated by kids coming to school hungry. Many things to improve there.

Although the last 8 years have seen some erosion (because the US exports many bad things to other nations), Canadians are still better educated, about both facts and civic responsibility.

Back in 2016 when one candidate started claiming he'd build a wall along the southern border (we're still waiting...) I said he was choosing the wrong border. The people from the south mostly were willing to take the crappy jobs American citizens didn't want, while the people from the north were taking the really good jobs. Americans couldn't compete! Remember that at the time Samantha Bee looked like she'd take over from John Stewart. There were other examples then and there have been more since. How often do you look up some celebrity or other famous person and find out they're from Canada? Often, for me. US tech companies say that their best recruits are from U of Waterloo. And so on.

The D[ictator] O[n] D[ay] [O]ne, though not known for intelligence, is correct that the US would have at least a small hope of remaining competitive on the world stage in innovation and creativity if it could just kidnap Canada. Without those - dare I say [forced] immigrants - we are rapidly becoming a Third World country.

Jagmeet Singh is right, and the NDP gets it. Unfortunately, we never manage to elect the NDP federally. Provincially yes, but federally no. I'm no great fan of the Liberals, but above all we need to ensure Poilievre and his "maple Maga" minions do not get elected.

Indeed, we Canadians need to be strategic this upcoming election - make sure our votes aren’t watered down by splitting them between the NDP and Liberal parties. It will be a regretful mistake if we end up with PP as Prime Minister-he’ll sell Canada out in a heartbeat I’ve no doubt😔

Our First Past The Post electoral system was never the best and is no longer necessary. With more than two strong parties being "left of center" it then gives opportunity for the "right" to have more influence.

We have the ability to implement ranked choice ballots. However it is obviously not in the best interest of the incumbents who were elected on the current system to then subsequently change that system.

Well, it's technically 338 separate mini-elections. My riding always goes orange, luckily and my MP is amazing. I'm always surprised how many voters don't pay attention to their local candidates and debates, then assume they have to vote Lib-Con. There are dozens of ridings where it's between Con and NDP – the LPC isn't a factor. Defeatism also plays a huge role in the Lib-Cons' favour: 40% of eligible voters don't bother! You'll never get what you don't fight for.

The gentleman who was on Peterson’s podcast sounds just like our Republicans!!! They want to do the same thing here!! I hope that doesn’t happen. I can’t understand what’s wrong with these people!! My mom worked for the city of NY and has a pension. My dad worked in the fur trade in NY and had a pension. I worked in NY and Florida. For both states. Thank goodness I have a pension from a university in Florida!!!It’s the people with private businesses that don’t understand the systems that are set up for people like me!! In Florida Rick Scott took away the pension plans that were set up for employees where I worked in a university!! I was fortunate in that I was one of the last people to receive a pension!!! (new employees will not have pensions). Meanwhile Scott was in the healthcare industry and made millions like that CEO who was killed. Needless to say, many of us here in Florida do not approve of him. To me, he is a criminal like Trump. The Republicans seem to want people like this. They want to destroy what worked for years!! Just because they own private businesses!! If they have employees they don’t want to have pay them a higher minimum wage. I don’t understand it. These owners seem to be so greedy!!!!

The gentleman on Peterson's podcast is no gentleman. He is a mini-me Trump-wannabe, and he wants to be our Prime Minister. (I'm Canadian, in case you can't tell.) And if we don't get our act together quickly, he will be. I hope there is time for Canadians to be made clearly aware of the dangers posed by a Conservative government under Pierre Poilievre, and to rally enough votes against them that they do not get elected. And although I'm not a Liberal Party supporter, I also hope that the NDP (my party of choice) doesn't pull a non-confidence vote on the current government, because that would result in a snap election which will almost certainly guarantee that the Cons get elected, and then we are royally screwed.

You mean like this? https://dissonantdissident.substack.com/p/relieved-of-command

I've been following the war in Ukraine, as well as politics in the US. Juxtaposing, I note that DJT greatly admires Putin, and other tyrants around the world. Putin is destroying his own country, killing hundreds of thousands of Russians in his efforts to enslave millions of Ukrainians. However, his conventional military is so weak and incompetent that it poses no credible threat to the US or Europe. Putin is a horrible person, but he is of sound mind, which means he can't actually use the nukes he has. He knows it's suicide to launch them, and so do his lieutenants and associates, who would surely intervene to save their own skins.

But what if Putin had the most formidable conventional military force in the world? A force he could deploy without guaranteeing his own immediate demise. What if he had the US military? Of course Putin is busy elsewhere, but what if some other aspiring despot gained command of our military, without any constraints from Congress, or the judicial system? What if he was willing to use the military against American citizens on US soil? And what if that despot was a megalomaniac whose mind was failing? Kinda scary doncha think? And not just for the United States, but for the whole world.

It is clear to me that DJT wants absolute power to rule the US just as Putin and other tyrants rule their nations. He wants an oligarchy of billionaires and a cabinet of corrupt loyalists, with him at the helm. He wants a weaponized justice department to implement a police state, to arrest and imprison any who oppose him. He wants a military that will extend his power over the whole world. This is a calamity that cannot be allowed to occur. I'm a veteran, I took an oath to protect our republic, and the Constitution that defines it, from enemies both foreign and domestic. I keep my promises.

DJT can never be allowed to command the US military. The moment he is inaugurated as Commander in Chief, he should be relieved of command by the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and immediately court martialed for treason. The office of President shall then be filled according to the chain of succession as defined in the Constitution, but with the caveat that no one in that chain shall be declared the President unless they have passed a thorough FBI background check and received top secret clearance.

This would not be a military coup, nor an insurrection. No violence is required or incited, and civilian leadership would be maintained at all times. But whatever MAGAt ended up in the oval office would know that there is indeed a line in the sand, not to be crossed. The Joint Chiefs of Staff would retain the power to relieve any acting President who violates the Constitution, as that is prima facie treason. Establish that precedent once, and the nation can weather the MAGAt storm until those shitheads are voted out.

As for the root problem, I have no idea how to increase the IQ of 74 million morons. Alternatively, perhaps we can offer them all a free luxury cruise, on the Golgafrinchan Ark Fleet Ship B. Just remember to disinfect your phone.

Our pensions in the U.S. began to rapidly disappear right after Ronald Reagan took office. This is not a coincidence. As Canadian NDP Party Leader Singh points out, pensions benefit the working class, but the rich want(ed) them gone. After all, paying into pensions to match employee contributions, plus ongoing maintenance of a pension program is expensive and (heavens forbid!) cuts into a business's profit margin.

Of course Canada should and will do whatever is necessary to protect themselves against Trump's evil intentions. Either way, Americans will be screwed financially and emotionally. Frankly, I love my country for the good that we have done and for the freedom we've had, but I won't stand by and accept our government's abuse of our neighbors worldwide, most especially Canada. And finally, as Leader Singh stated, Canadians don't want to go backwards and lose their national health coverage!

While I appreciate Singh speaking out, I would have liked a deeper dive into why he wanted Trudeau to resign instead of waiting to call an election for October of this year like originally planned. He is clearly campaigning (I would be doing the same considering). I would have also liked for him to have been asked what conversations he held with Polievre prior to announcing his volte face to stop working with the Liberals and to support a non confidence vote in the new year when neither the NDP nor the Liberals are prepared for a federal election.

Charlie Angus was speaking from the gut. I don’t doubt Singh finds Polievre’s politics repulsive but he is being a bit insincere in this interview. I would like to see you interview Justin Trudeau. Now that he won’t be running for Prime Minister in the next election, he may be more forthcoming than normal. Here’s an even wilder thought. My take is that the Liberals' attacks on unions was one step too far, after they'd slow walked dental care and pharmacare for years, and tied up in committee or rejected every NDP private members' bill to tackle greedflation and corporate price gouging.

Dissolving the confidence and supply agreement after it had delivered what it could made sense, to disrupt the narrative away from Poilievre's inevitability. In the end, Singh's gambit demanding scandal-ridden Trudeau's resignation was successful, even if he doesn't get the credit.

This scares me. Mr. Singh is saying the EXACT SAME THINGS Ms. Harris said, and she still lost. Whether she lost legitimately, or the system was rigged doesn't matter - she still lost. Trump and company are going to ruin this country, and apparently they want to pull the entire continent into the same Fascist Oligarchy. The percentage of MAGA in Canada is about the same as here. Only 40%. But it was enough. I believe our system was rigged by Musk and his Starlink. There are those who vehemently disagree with me, saying our system CAN'T be rigged. But Musk himself said "anything can be rigged." There is way too much "circumstantial evidence" that our system WAS rigged. Tens of thousands at the Harris rallies, compared with a few hundred at Trump rallies. We all saw the videos streamed in real time. Hundreds of Republican politicians endorsing and voting for Harris. Tens of thousands of Republican voters (like me) putting country over party and voting for Harris. Dozens of Military Brass endorsing and voting for Harris. Tens of thousands of military personnel denying that they are "losers," voting for Harris. Record numbers of people registering to vote, in response to celebrities endorsing Harris. I do NOT believe those new voters stayed home, NOR do I believe they voted for Trump. I have read posts from poll workers who said that the numbers sent from the machines did not match the numbers of voters or the paper ballots. It was basically in the swing states, which was ALL THAT WAS NEEDED to be rigged. What's to stop the same thing from happening in Canada?

I’m kind of fantasizing right now that Elizabeth May will go all pragmatic and throw her hat into the ring for Liberal leader! 😃 Did you hear her torch Trump in her speech the other day? Outstanding. I think she could make mincemeat out of PP.

Great interview Meidas Touch. Yes, Canadians, for the most part, are quite happy living in our own sovereign nation with our ‘socialist ‘ health, dental and pharma care, our old age pensions, employment insurance and the many other benefits that come from living in a parliamentary democracy.

As Ben opines forever about Evil Empire Trump the following still remains true:

Ben says that he does not use ads. That is false. MidasTouch monetizes it's content on Ytube and sells millions of ads

Ben own s LA Magazine, which is a slutty glossy ad filled city rag. that is filled with all the glitz and shit you would expect from a publication like National Inquirer

Meidas Touch is a PAC that is hard core Democratic and takes donations, subscriptions, and ad revenues to buy political ads. It is not a news source aka CNN or Reuters

Meidas Bros! You’re smoothing your deliveries out nicely! And making it mostly viewable exc for ( get ready it’s your senior neighbor here!) hats & clothing are relaxed too much! I don’t want suits, but I do want tidy (read professional) heads! That’s all we see as we listen. I don’t want to be distracted by outdoor hats ~ what’s the weather like?!

Take it with LOVE and ADMIRATION for your brilliant, consistent reporting in the DARKEST times of our country’s history.

Your admiring granny from rural America…

Mr Singh has held our country hostage by refusing to agree to a vote of non confidence simply because he’s waiting to qualify for his inflated pension that comes due in February. He had numerous opportunities to vote non confidence over these past two months even voting down his own words in a motion brought by the opposition party

This man is for HIMSELF and couldn’t give a rats behind for our country

You have been drinking the KoolAid that PP has been serving up. Jagmeet Singh doesn’t need to hang on for a Govt pension. He worked for many years as a successful lawyer and has plenty of his own money. PP is the one who needed the govt pension as his only job prior to running for office was as a paperboy. He’s never even gotten a single bill passed in the twenty odd years he’s been sitting in Parliament. He is playing you for a fool. Wake up!

Read my reply…I didn’t say Singh needed his pension..just that he’s greedy..he refused to a vote of non confidence that was crafted using his very own words …He voted against himself..why?..because he wouldn’t be able to collect on his pension.

I think it’s you who needs a wake up call

I don't think Singh pushed Trudeau out, he and the NDP were better off in that agreement getting things done. PP raged farmed a lot of people this past 2 years, chummed up with the whiners (aka convoy craycrays), made the PM out to be an evil dictator. PP is the sleezebag bully, always has been.

YES, they ARE going to install the person that the majority of Voting Americans said they want to be President! YES, that's what it means to be a Democracy. But don't worry. The amount of pain most US citizens are going to feel within months should be enough to remind 80% of them that voting isn't something that other people do and that not voting for the one person that can actually win has consequences. We can flip both houses of Congress in less than 2 years if people want to. If not it'll 4 years of pain before the next chance to make things a little better.

when Donald Trump was elected and he first started attacking Canada, there was a lot of confusion, I think, within Canada about how to respond. but not from you. You immediately responded right away and said, you will not bully us. And after that, I thought it gave others the confidence because you're seeing it now with a lot of
