SPEAKER 2
I'm joined by Congressman Tom Swasey from actually my hometown in Long Island, New York. Congressman, welcome. I just want to touch upon some of the breaking news of the day. Donald Trump announcing that he's apparently having his own make-believe department called the Doge Department, and he's appointing Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to this make-believe department. I mean,
0:24
if this was a fictional movie, there may be some humor in that, but this is serious business, cabinet departments, the appointment process. What's going on here? Because I think we do need some seriousness on the Hill.

SPEAKER 3
You know, I think it's a favor for Elon Musk. Doge, D-O-G-E, is also Dogecoin, which Elon Musk was very big with that. So he's just trying to do another favor to Elon Musk. I don't think it's part of the government. I think it's an outside agency that they're going to be pushing for, as they say, governmental efficiency.

Ben Meiselas Interviews Congressman Tom Suozzi

MeidasTouch host Ben Meiselas and Long Island's own Congressman Suozzi discuss Trump’s chaotic appointments, bipartisan cooperation, and the future of American governance.
48

Today, we released an interview between MeidasTouch co-founder Ben Meiselas and Congressman Tom Suozzi (D-NY 3rd District). Rep. Suozzi’s district just so happens to be the hometown district of MeidasTouch’s co-founders on Long Island, New York. Most recently, and perhaps most embarrassingly, it was the district where MAGA fraudster George Santos held his seat. Suozzi then won the seat back in a special election. For Ben, this conversation hits close to home—not just geographically but also in its focus on the critical issues facing our nation.

From Trump’s absurd “DOGE Department” announcement to bipartisan strategies for real solutions, Suozzi brings his signature blend of pragmatism and passion for the people he represents—and provides a blueprint for Democrats across the nation.

Not a cheap shot. She cruelly abused and killed a happy puppy that didn’t pass the test. She could’ve adopted him out to another family. Dangerous choice. Serious you say? Seriously apathetic.

Right?? It was a show of her character. She said she hated the dog. She killed the dog. I feel like that's pretty cut and dry exposure of what type of person she is, and we would all do well to remember it.

Trump’s appointments are a horror show. A bizarre state of affairs.

Gabbard is possibly a Russian agent

Gaetz is a true sociopath

Hegeseth is a white nationalist who doesn’t believe in germs

And RFK is crazy.

This guy is Switzerland. It’s useless to be Switzerland when we are quite literally under attack from within. We need legislators with balls to say it like it is. His careful speech lends legitimacy to these complete nuts that Trump is appointing. Kissing Trump’s ass is not going to gain Trump’s loyalty or stop the evil he intends. You cannot reason with terrorists.

I agree too. The only way to deal with a bully is to loudly call him out. They can't handle outright, in your face, standing up to them and saying no more. I had to do thar as a grade schooler, I shouldn't have to do it at 64 years old. But by God, I will with all my might. In any way legally possible.

I have heard Democrats talking about border security and immigration reform for a long time this man generalizing that Democrats don’t care or ever talk about immigration is nonsense. Cooperating in our Senate and House has been so impossible to work with isn’t the Democrats fault!

"We need to work across party lines"--really, Congressman? Dems have tried to work across the aisle for YEARS and have been obstructed at every turn, thanks to Mitch McConnell and the GOP. How do you work with that? It's the GOP that cares only about POWER, and the Dems that actually care about helping people.

"They found 60 votes in the Senate in 2006 and 2013" for immigration legislation, and "each time the House Republican majority refused to take it up. The Democrats talk about immigration, they take action like DACA they just don't use fear for their campaigns. Souzzi is wrong about his comments about Democrats and immigration. They address and make legislation and work on solutions all the time!

Musk should not be in our government at all. And TV hosts, weird people just because they are Maga. Argh! SMH. I wonder how we are to survive the next 4 years. I'm worried as hell. I have to say it, I'm worried as hell. If we survive this and can start getting back on track, we might be okay to rebuild our country. But thanks to a crazy man, it is going to take decades. I'll be gone before the country is truly back on track.

I fear for my son, neice and nephews, and now, great nephews! What is in store for them?

If Elon Musk is going to work for the Trump administration, he should have all government contracts cancelled immediately. He has a serious conflict of interest that needs to be addressed before he can take on the dodgy government job Trumps made up for him. White collar criminals will always be white collar criminals.

It makes it so much easier to spot people, say you make a great comment, I read it and I see your icon, the icon kind of sticks in my head and I will read carefully future comments. For me it works like this, first I recognize the icons and then later on I begin to associate the names with the icons.

Plus it makes these pages more fun, more colorful. My icon represents my deep support for people who are LGBT.

I don't feel like Tom brought anything new to the conversation. We all know we need to work together. WE aren't the ones that are incapable of that, and Trump has proved time and time again that he doesn't want to WORK with people on things. He wants people to do what he says and MAGA is going to do just that. Tom was talking about the issues we have as a country as if they're black and white. The issue is nuanced and complicated. Democrats and the Left have tried so hard to work with Republicans in the past and that's just not what they want. There is no working together or compromising, and that's the problem- we have to do something different. I appreciate actual congressmen giving Meidas Touch the time of day, but all I heard were the same talking points that Dems have been speaking for decades.

Further to my thoughts on Tom Suozzi. When he talks about bipartisanship that’s been proven impossible with the current Republican Congress and I’m sure it’ll continue in the next session with one exception they’ll be doing Trump’s bidding for retribution and anything else their leader commands. I wonder if on an effort of bipartisanship he’ll reach across the aisle and sign to help them do it. I hope I’m wrong but only time will tell.

Tom Suozzi sounds like a DINO (Democrat In Name Only). When he was normalizing Trump’s awful cabinet selections he sounded more like a Republican and not a Democrat. They are all awful and none of them should be anywhere near the levers of power, our national security, homeland security, or our law enforcement. The Democrats have tried for a long time to fix our broken immigration system but never got any bipartisan support so for him to say what he said about it was nonsense. The next time you have him on I’ll make sure to miss it.

Rep. Suozzi said several things I found very concerning: “Let’s see what happens…” Sounds very apathetic. He said about Hegseth, “Maybe he will be great.” How can he say this when we know many crazy things Hegseth has said and done??? For example:

Hegseth has said women should not be in combat. Said the Iraq war was something we got right. Paints the military as anti-white in his 2024 book. Wants to purge military of DEI. Fear-mongers repeatedly about the spread of Islam in U.S. Is very fixated on the Christian crusades, even bearing a tattoo of their cross. Because of the extreme nature of his tattoos, he was not allowed to be a guard in Biden’s inauguration.

Hegseth Is big supporter of Laura Loomer. Claims he hasn’t washed hands for 10 years saying “Germs are not a real thing. I can’t see them, therefore, they are not real.” Has made many inflammatory comments about trans people.

Hegseth has close connections with the Christian radical group TheoBros. An influential member of the group said women should never have been given the right to vote.

How can Suozzi say “Maybe he will be great?” If he is so uninformed about Hegseth’s deficits, he should say so, not make such an outrageous statement.

He says mentioning Kristi Noem’s dog is taking a cheap shot and that she is a serious person. She’s the one who disseminated the concerning info on how she killed her dog, goat, and horse, not her political enemies—in her recent biography. In her book she lied about meeting Kim Jong-un, which she later admitted.

She has been one of the worst anti-LGBTQ+ politicians in the country.

She posted a video to social media extolling the work of Smile Texas, a cosmetic dentistry company and was hit with a lawsuit accusing her of “misleading and deceptive advertising.”

She repeatedly sent National Guard troops to the Texas border, resulting in a lawsuit by CREW. She tapped her state’s Emergency and Disaster Fund to cover some of the $2.7 million costs. She has done many questionable things that certainly disqualify her as a serious person.

I wouldn’t be surprised iof Rep. Suozzi changed parties and became a Republican. He seems very uninformed about the dangers Trump and suck-o-phants present.

Ben, please reconsider having Suozzi on again!

This smells of anti Palestinian rhetoric. I get that there are very small numbers of pro Hamas morons out there but the vast majority just want an end to the violence and death and diaspora.

Trump’s oil billionaire donors have secured votes by pandering to religious extremists & white supremacists who share the common value of misogyny and thrive when they use victimhood to shield themselves from the ugliness of who they truly are… “your body, my choice” ring a bell? It is exceedingly offensive to hear a Democratic leader suggest that I need to just accept misogynistic threats against my and millions of other women’s rights, stand by while immigrants (and the businesses and communities who work in partnership with them) are terrorized with threats of deportation (whether they succeed or not), watch while right-wing politicians continually take action to try to limit the influence of Black voters and attempt to shame/humiliate members of the LGBTQ community and then have him suggest that I support legislation that could potentially help Trump and these monsters stay in power and continue to destroy our government. Really? Your strategy is “Hey, don’t look at the roaring fucking dumpster fire behind me and ignore the threats to your personhood made by the car full of horror-movie clowns clawing for the top of the steaming shit pile of an autocracy they hope to create…just listen to the soothing sound of my voice and do what I say is best”. Seriously?! We just never mind that the Democratic candidates on the top of the ticket would have protected everyone’s rights and secured a way forward by offering policies that would have helped the SAME struggling citizens to which he is referring, but who put Trump back in the White House anyway?! This is why I am an independent, why right-leaning voters are turned off by the Democratic Party and why the party continues to lose elections. “Hey everyone. Let’s just tuck our tails and hope they leave us some scraps from their garbage like they did last time”.

I visit and subscribe to various creators on Substack, because I want permanent solutions for our corrupt officials & billionaires problem. I want a way forward with as many of my countrypersons as possible. I am willing to hear and accept differing opinions and work together with anyone, but I am not willing (or foolish enough) to overlook the real threat to our rights, our government and way of life. I know I am not alone. Thank you for keeping up the fight!
