By Michael de Adder

It’s clear that today’s Republicans find themselves supporting actions and policies under Donald Trump that they would have firmly opposed in the past. Once champions of free trade, fiscal restraint, and strong alliances, they now watch — and often defend — as Trump imposes tariffs, balloons the national debt, and attacks long-standing institutions like the FBI and the judiciary. Not to mention siding with Russia over a democratic nation defending itself. While some do so out of political calculation, fearing Trump’s grip on the Republican base, others have gradually shifted their positions to align with his, reshaping the party into something that would be unrecognizable to any Republican at any other time in history.
