Yes, Al-Qaeda won. We Americans were urged by our leaders not to live in fear, but shortly after, our Congress passed the Patriot Act, whereby Americans were increasingly monitored by their government.
The Patriot Act played us for fools; we couldn't take this, that and other thing in our luggage. Couldn't wear whatever, take your shoes off on cold and dirty airport floors. Missing flights because they pulled someone out to go into a back room to be physically searched. I was flying out of LaGuardia the day the 1st Gulf War started. I had to leave my hot rollers behind because TSA said they looked like detonators! What?!? In 2010 my husband and I were flying out of Reagan in DC, which had been closed due to a week long blizzard. He was required to fly with medication, he had notarized statements from his Dr. yet they were still going to either keep us off the only flight we could get out on, or leave his meds behind. Someone came out of some back office and told TSA to cut the crap and we were able to fly out. After that day in April 2010 I swore to never fly again, and I haven't.

I haven't flown since 2017. Between the infringements on my freedom, the airline cancellations and delays at American airports no matter what carrier we used, and the unruly behavior of some of the airline passengers, it's never been worth it to me.
My English husband and I would return to the UK periodically before he passed. Every American carrier would let us down. We eventually made all our trips through Air Canada, where the service was much better. They would actually apologize if the flight was delayed a half-hour. In the US, we'd get snickers from the desk clerks every time we asked when our delayed flight was expected to leave. Nothing more tedious than spending hours in the airport terminal. Give me Air Canada and the polite Canadians at the Toronto airport!
I am just a couple of years younger than Trump, and I have seen our freedoms diminish during my lifetime. Each encroachment is first met with controversy. I am remembering the controversy over unmarked patrol cars. Then over over-zealous DUI laws, then over drug testing and confiscation of property for nonviolent offenses. Kids encouraged to turn in their parents as DARE was rolled out in the schools. The militarization of the police. Then 9-11 presented another opportunity for government power-grab. The Fourth Amendment usually goes first. And the First Amendment. Then the others. Habeas corpus and the ancient liberties won through English common law. Before long, the citizens only think they are free under the Constitution. And only because the government keeps telling them that they are free.
We have walked the same walk! Our life experience has shown that whatever the "government tells us" is really the exact opposite. After this Regime ends credibility for even "good" government is going to have to be seriously earned. My paternal Grandmother was from Missouri - I follow her example of "Show Me"

We attacked and invaded the wrong countries in response to 9/11. Iraq and Afghanistan had nothing to do with 9/11. 15 of the 19 hijackers were Saudi citizens. Osama bin Laden was living in Pakistan. Why was OBL allowed to escape through the Khyber Pass? Somebody sure got it wrong...deliberately.

I think patriotism is why the population was ready to go to war over 911. We were also ready to trust the government on who was responsible for the attack. At least we trusted the government for awhile.
