I would much rather have a Republican pull a "Thom Tillis" and announce he has chosen not to seek reelection, so he can vote "no" on this bill (I hope) than to have a Republican congress person just vote "yes" on the bill to avoid any trouble. We must recognize that not all congress people are brave enough to risk their lives and livelihood for a principle, in which case allowing someone else to step into the seat and take on the challenge is the best solution. Challenging the current regime in such a public forum is definitely dangerous. That's where we are in this country today, sadly. We have become lawless. There is little protection.

But they are risking their careers if they vote for this horrible bill... especially when all their obfuscation and deceit is exposed. No moderate let alone liberal, will be confused as to their intention. I can't help but wonder why they went into politics if their spine is made of jello!

Candidates do not have to be “progressive” - they need to be aware, Constitutionalists, and supporters of a democracy! Decency and kindness are important, too.

We need goodness in our candidates. Be prepared, Candidates-there is a BIG job ahead!

Murkowski got bribed with Alaskan perks, so now the absurd bill is ok.

Actually the Senate Parliamentarian ruled out the Medicaid exception. So we will see.

But there were other Alaska-specific perks that appear to have survived Parliamentarian scrutiny. I suppose Murkowski will hang her hat on those provisions and vote "yes", while proclaiming how much she is opposed to the bill in general. If we're looking for political courage, we're not going to find it in Republican Senators, that's for sure.

What I don’t understand is why senators like Thillis don’t think they could be elected again by voting against a bill that would harm his state and his constituents. Does he think he could win if he voted to hurt them??

If we lose the country it won't matter where you go you will be responsible, whining about be the only voice of reason will not cut it. Do your damn jobs, your constituents demand it.

I don't buy the notion that standing your ground and principles and fearing job loss is a big deal. If you are person of convictions, nothing is too big for maintaining ones self respect! I've stood up to lame, self servig business owers in the past, only to be escorted out the door! So What? Eventually I started my own succesful company which I recently sold and retired from. I never had to compromise my own principles in lieu of careing about job loss! That's what makes me a Democrat!

The funny thing is that I just celebrated my 65th class reunion. Most of them do know what substack is. How crazy if that?? If you are a Republican stand up for your constituents. Make a difference. Be brave. Trump is a very weak man. Jerk his chain. Stop being cowards. You know this is wrong. Don't give the rich tax cuts. If you give Trump what he wants instead of what we want, your legacy will make your children and grandchildren ashamed of knowing you. BE BRAVE. VOTE NO.

I'm looking at what's more important with Tillis stepping down. At least he is now voting NO on the big bullshit bill. Who cares if people think it's surrendering. What counts is he is voting NO. That's like saying if maga changes their minds on trump and want to join us and do what's right then I'm suppose to say they're cowards and aren't worth my time. NO I won't. I'll accept them.
