Flipping Deep-Red Iowa? Josh Turek Knows How.

Paralympic gold medalist and Iowa State Rep. Josh Turek launches his U.S. Senate run to take on MAGA extremism and put working Iowans first.

When people say a deep-red Senate seat can’t be flipped, I tell them to look at Iowa, and to look at Josh Turek. This week, I had the honor of speaking with Turek, a Paralympian, state representative, and lifelong underdog who’s just announced his run for the U.S. Senate against MAGA loyalist Joni Ernst.

If you don’t know Josh’s story, it’s remarkable. Born with spina bifida from his father’s Agent Orange exposure, he endured 21 surgeries by the age of 12. He grew up wearing Goodwill hand-me-downs, but refused to let circumstances define his future. Watching the Olympics as a child in his wheelchair, he dreamed of winning gold for his country—and then did it. Twice. Back-to-back gold medals.

Josh didn’t stop there. He went on to win one of the reddest seats held by a Democrat in Iowa—twice—by outworking everyone, crawling up stairs to knock on doors, and connecting with voters across party lines on kitchen table issues. That’s grit. That’s leadership. And it’s exactly what Iowa needs in the U.S. Senate.

Joni Ernst? She’s made a career out of gutting the very social safety nets that allowed Josh, and millions of other Americans, to succeed. She infamously shrugged off concerns about health care with “we’re all going to die anyway,” while pushing tax breaks for billionaires and marching in lockstep with Donald Trump’s corrupt, self-serving agenda.

Meanwhile, Trump is busy bragging about his golf scores, building gaudy ballrooms, and coddling Putin, while Iowa farmers, small businesses, and working families struggle to keep the lights on. Josh Turek has a different vision: a livable wage, affordable housing, accessible health care, strong family farms, and government that works for people, not corporate donors.

I’ve seen the energy building in Iowa. Republicans, independents, and Democrats alike are showing up to Josh’s events, many with buyer’s remorse over Trump and Ernst. Iowa is a common-sense state, and voters are fed up with being sold out.

Josh Turek is the kind of underdog who wins. He’s proven it before. And with this race, he could help flip the balance of the Senate and send a message to Trump’s MAGA machine that the Midwest won’t be bought.
