Funny (?) story. My very elderly father who has always been a republican but hates Trump only watches Fox News - all damn day. I keep telling him his brain is rotting away because of it. He insists that the "news" he watches is real news. Yesterday after he spouted off some garbage about the Cleveland Guardians changing back to the Indians and I tried explaining the real story, he told me I just hadn't watched the news that day. Sigh. I'm watching first hand how Fox distorts facts (or omits them entirely). Luckily dad didn't vote for Trump. But his brain is seriously rotting away. I blame Fox News for the decline

Good ole FOX news. I have a brother who worked as a cameraman for them. A cameraman. Let that one sit for a minute and then one day he starts spouting off how he interviewed this one and that one and sat with a few Presidents and interviewed them and how they lie. I questioned, "Interviewed? You are a cameraman." To which I was told, "Yes, I am a cameraman, but my job also included interviewing." To this day, he tells us that we watch the wrong news so we don't get the actual truth. My husband asked him one day where he gets his news from then and he told him "the news"

Unfortunately many folks equate their personal confirmation bias with truth. It is not a rational decision, so presenting rational facts is ineffective. It is better slip under their guard with a "solidarity...but" kinda comment. "Hey Dad, these folks on Fox are just so darned devoted to Trump and I know you can't stand the guy...how do you think they square that circle?"

I am sure others out there can come up with better lines! Come in with a friendly approach and ask the question that leads to reflection...

They are. It is a deliberate attempt to change the meaning of a phrase or word. Give it another meaning all the time and the new meaning sticks, like it did for "woke".

Expand full comment
blithe's avatar

its also a cult technique known as 'loaded language'. cults will take certain buzzwords or phrases and abuse them to the point they lose their actual meaning as words, but just elicit a pavlovian emotional response. examples 'benghazi' they rode that one forever. they are trying to make something stick with the 'autopen' and 'hunters laptop' and 'tren de aragua' in the same way but failing on all of them bc ppl are starting to catch on. all those buzzword failed to gain traction in the same way they flogged 'benghazi' and others for years and years.

they have done this too with all the names, biden obama hillary those are not even words anymore to maga, they simply elicit a completely irrational emotional response -- unrelated to the actual word itself. same with socialism, marxim, communism, none of which they could define in a billion years. in cults its a form of 'thought stopping' -- making sure no rational conversation can be had around a topic. it becomes irrational immediately bc maga doesnt undertand english and just want to yell at things. loaded language is 100000% a cult technique.

That sounds like Trump. He's gone really bad and is loud about everything. Not real government business, but loud about any of his corruption schemes, his lies, his trying to take the USA down, etc. We should start calling him the muffler man - the one that needs to be replaced.
