Trump and Hegseth got rid of the military accountability office that looked at actions BEFORE as well as after. Hegseth also removed the senior JAG officers. As a result, Trump and Hegseth can bomb fishing boats, civilians, etc. to their non-existent hearts content.

Renaming the DOD as the Dept. of War was substantive, not symbolic, and probably should have been recognized as such and for what it foreshadowed.

I disagree. What our country did with, say, the Marshall Plan, is an example of what we really used to do to combat national hatred and wickedness.

Slavery. Genocide. Jim Crow. Discrimination. Bombing countries for no reason (examples Vietnam and Iraq). War crimes and crimes against humanity. We have never been the good guys. This isn't the first time we're murdering civilians

I am recently figuring that out, sadly. We have been sold a pack of lies our entire lives, and I don't see our way out of it.

Why did women have to wait for 133 years (1787-1920) to be granted (by whom?) a constitutional right to vote? Why were the 1964 CRA and the 1965 VRA necessary?

For every Marshall Plan, there is an Evian Conference, a Treaty of Versailles, Bay of Pigs and many more dark hat operations, including:

• Tuskegee Syphilis Study

• The Palmer Raids

• WW II Japanese Internment

• My Lai Massacre

• COINTELPRO

No, the US is not always the "good guy." Ask any Native American.

Phil Johnson's avatar

You are correct. I am ashamed to say that, but the one that got me was Thump's defenestration of USAID, which I have supported for 35 years. And why? Give you three guesses and the first four don't count.

I also subscribe/donate to Native American groups in some feeble attempt to right the two+ centuries' -long abuse and intolerance of their peoples, the original Americans. Not much we can be proud of there, either.

Kelvin Hobbs's avatar

Well done, sir: leadership by example, with the organizations and causes you included as among those you support some of the most vulnerable and poorly-treated, but certainly not the last among us. It was heartening to read about your support for USAID and Native Americans

The dismantling of that social welfare agency by DOGE resonates with me, too, since among the countless (and growing) acts of stupidity and cruelty in which these people have engaged, that one is unparalleled. USAID had a 2026 budget of $19.2B (https://tinyurl.com/46prj5yr), or less than Trump burned (literally and figuratively) in 20 days of excursionary death in Iran.

JFK created USAID by EO 10973 (https://tinyurl.com/c8yfhsma) in November 1961, to give greater force and effect to the Foreign Assistance Act by ensuring investment in and aid to emerging non-hostile nations. Why take food an medicine from impoverished children? Cruelty, racism, and because sub-Saharan Africa does not produce oil; thus, it was declared a liability.

The first day in office Presidential Action (https://tinyurl.com/5dnzay4s) justified this cruelty as “not aligned with American interests and in many cases antithetical to American values.” What?

(Big sigh) - I knew what I would find, but I checked USAID's web site to confirm: "As of 11:59 p.m. EST on Sunday, February 23, 2025, all USAID direct hire personnel, with the exception of designated personnel responsible for mission-critical functions, core leadership and/or specially designated programs, will be placed on administrative leave globally." In May 2025, Bill Gates said this about Elon Musk: “The picture of the world’s richest man killing the world’s poorest children is not a pretty one,” https://tinyurl.com/2etyfvue

Thank you for posting about the humanity you shared for 35 years and no doubt still do. ☮ KH

The key to defeating Trump? Mass non-cooperation | Mark Engler and Paul Engler

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2026/feb/15/defeat-trump-mass-non-cooperation

The following are excerpts from this article.

“The extraordinary level of grassroots solidarity and creative resistance in anti-ICE protests in Minnesota has given people a new appreciation for the power that mass non-cooperation can have in resisting the Trump administration’s drive toward authoritarianism. And it has created an awareness of why such action is clearly needed.”

Early in Trump’s second term, an array of mainstream critics expressed skepticism about the value of continued protests in the streets. They invested their faith in institutions such as Congress and the courts. But as these institutions – along with law firms, universities and the business community – have each caved in to the administration’s demands and proven themselves unwilling to catalyze an ardent defense of democracy, it has been left to the people themselves to do this essential work.

Mainstream political thinking in the US sees power as “monolithic,” resting in the hands of senators, generals, billionaires, presidents and CEOs. From that vantage point, the options for opposing a rogue administration seem desperately thin: wait for elections, file a lawsuit, hope for some unforeseen maneuver by elites. This worldview breeds despair. One prominent Democratic party consultant even advised that the best course for progressives is simply to “roll over and play dead”.

Those immersed in social movements look at the process of change in a different way than political insiders do. Instead of subscribing to the monolithic view of power, they hold a social view of power, which understands that those in positions of authority are dependent upon the cooperation and support of the governed.

Now, as then, the list of methods is best seen as an invitation to creativity, reminding organizers they have many tools in their collective toolbox – each with distinctive properties and powers. The potential of civil resistance is not just in holding large demonstrations. It is in drawing from a vast array of strikes, boycotts, noncooperation tactics and artistic protest. And it is in coming up with innovative forms of creative resistance that may never have been seen before.”

Kelvin Hobbs's avatar

“Nonviolence was a creative doctrine in the South because it checkmated the rabid segregationists who were thirsting for an opportunity to physically crush Negroes. … This is the reason there was less loss of life in ten years of southern protest than in ten days of northern riots.” “It’s a strange thing how demonstrations tend to solve problems. ... Anytime we’ve had demonstrations in a community, people have found a way to slough off their self-hatred, and they have a channel to express their longings and a way to fight nonviolently — to get at the power structure, to know you’re doing something, so you don’t have to be violent to do it.” Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “Showdown for Nonviolence” (April 16, 1968 Look Magazine)

It would be amazing if there was a nationwide boycott of paying taxes, no employees, none working airports, shipping and all forms of anything that these elites would need to survive (MAGA). We the lowly support each other with needs, we deny them. I think it would be interesting 🤔. Maybe far fetched but I enjoy imagining such a situation. Barricade them in their offices for a month.

John Hurlbut's avatar

I suggest small protests at each polling station at voting time. Not enough to stop voting, just enough to curtail ICE interference.

Kelvin Hobbs's avatar

Why small? Those waiting to vote can provide a protective ring for those voting, then those who have voted can trade places with them. Not just passive resistance but the engaged, active assertion - en masse - of a fundamental constitutional right. If DHS interferes with peaceful protests such as these, the impact will be immediate and pervasive and likely will lead to even bigger groups

Like all criminals, they are never ever sorry for the crimes they committed-criminals, as all of maga are, only get upset that they were caught and will face consequences. All of maga would duly march to the polls and elect this evil stench upon society, again today. Trust me, they will all still support dear leader no matter who suffers!!! As long as it is not them. Maga are a band of criminals and behave just as all criminals and their head criminal, dear leader, behave. Start the fire then run away and blame anybody else but themselves. And so this is playing out in real time and in real deaths that maga cares not one whit about. Neither does their still beloved dear leader!!! Shameful and as disgusting as it sounds.

Jo Kooser's avatar

Patricia Montague-you are right that the country is quite divided. But I see a lot of americans coming together for these No King’s Days and etc so I am feeling just a bit of hope that the shit has truly hit that fan and people are starting to see what reality looks like and they don’t like what america is becoming.Maga will always follow trump so that bunch is a lost cause. But, it seemed to start with the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti that people began to see in real time they were being lied to. Maga will always be hopeless, but good people reacted against innocents being killed in cold blood on american streets. People started coming together more since. This coming Saturday yet another No Kings march is attracting a lot more support since the last one even.Maga is forever hopeless, true this. But I am a bit more hopeful that democrats can put the good in us back together in the next election for congress and senate seats, if they are fair of course. The fix might already be in but just maybe it is not as solid as trump thinks. That would be huge and of course there are never guarantees, but I have a bit more hope than before. So yes, this country has always had its divisions, that is how democracies duly function. But I am hoping for a pushback effort so dems can win their elections. We sure need to replace the cowardly democrats now holding office with folks willing to fight for our democracy. We do not have that now. But I hold on to hope until reality hits I guess. But, just maybe.🤞

Kelvin Hobbs's avatar

Agreed, Patricia, divided, and maybe splintered. The writings of Primo Levi and Elie Wiesel come to mind: they inserted Bystanders, those who were passively complicit, by inaction and silence, between the Perpetrators and the Oppressed. I think we have all three represented in this battle for the soul of democracy. If Bystanders do not align and stand as one with the Oppressed, it will be hard to check the power of the Aggressors. Arm in arm, each for the other, e pluribus unum, that is the "we" that must emerge or will become, as the title of one of Levi's books declares, "The Drowned and the Saved."

patricia montague's avatar

Guess I’m really feeling the divide and do not want claim to any of this regime’s horrid actions. I am still hopeful for good midterm results. You wonder though if the Bystander is even an informed voter. You would think they’d have perked up by now! Thanks Kelvin .. I enjoy your posts - helpful and informative.

Kelvin Hobbs's avatar

Thank you, Patricia. Likewise, I find your posts to be interesting and insightful. I think the middle tier - bystanders - may in some ways resemble a Venn Diagram with the overlapping circles including the uninformed, the apathetic, and those who opt out by choice. Likely for many reasons, especially the young who may see no light at the beginning of the tunnel, let alone the end, these people discard what probably is the best opportunity for a future they have by treating their right to participate in the outcome - to vote - as valueless. One vote may seem to be insignificant and for some, not worth the effort, especially for those too young to remember or who never learned that Bush won FL by 537 of ~6M votes cast.

Eugenics And The Right To Vote

For the Nazi Republican party or CNPP(Christian Nationalist Pedo Party) racism becomes a form of eugenics(there are segments of a society that should or have an obligation to rule due to their superior genetic makeup) RFK Jr ascribes to this eugenics ideology as well as most of the supporting politically involved billionaire class such as Muskrat, Bezos, Theil, Karp to name a few but the list goes much deeper

Notice that if you’ve made billions it puts you at the top of the heap For all of the rest of the peons, well they’re not equal So the Constitution says that “all men are created equal” but for the past Nazis in Third Reich Germany and the present Nazis who call themselves proud members of the CNPP the “blue blood’ or Aryan strain is what sets them apart and deems that they should lead

In this vein of inequality all of the attacks on voting rights(state legislatures redistricting efforts, the SAVE Act, dismissal of mail in voting by SCOTUS, trying to get state voter data through the DOJ lawsuits) by the CNPP is to reduce voter turnout The underlying theme of today’s CNPP is that only the superior genetics in the population should vote It’s incumbent upon WE the People to vote early and encourage all of our friends, family, and neighbors to do the same because WE are all equal

The Trump Administration’s Strategy for Reshaping Elections; Just Secuirty; 27-Mar-26; https://tinyurl.com/bdzs5ehr; The pattern of President Trump’s rhetoric and actions affecting the United States’ election process largely tracks the authoritarian playbook seen in countries undergoing democratic backsliding. While it has at times been a clumsy effort that trips over constitutional limits and is blocked by judicial and political resistance, taken as a whole, the Trump administration’s actions are consistent with an election takeover pattern that consists of five steps:

1. Lay the groundwork by spreading false election narratives

2. Install loyalists who act on those false narratives

3. Rewrite the rules and weaponize the executive branch against the system

4. Create an intimidating environment around voting

5. Attack the count and certification

Protect the Vote's avatar

all of this premised on the Nazi Republican ideology that voters are not created equal and only those with money and/or power should determine who should vote....this has long been what they believe it's just now on the table for everyone to see

The democracy that has lasted the longest of any in the world is to be found in Switzerland. They inherited their's from the AWOL soldiers who escaped Julius Cesar's army when it was completing his second campaign to Britain. The Swiss completely reject any campaign money and any lobbing of their levers of government and they only allow the public vote. Everything the government does goes to a public vote. You get these ballots almost once a month in the mail, you fill them out and take the ballots back to the Post Office where thy are tabulated by hand by the Postmaster. The postmaster calls in his votes over the phone to the Federal Office. In the mean time on every Sunday afternoon there is a "town hall" meeting in the municipal central square where anyone can bring any measure up for consideration and discussion directly by the electorate, and those measures may make it to a ballot.

Julianne Bergstrom's avatar

More like a real democracy.

Kelvin Hobbs's avatar

And yet …

Swiss direct democracy has a reform-averse tendency in the case of referendums if citizens vote on a bill accepted by parliament. Institutional reform that makes direct democracy compatible with swift solutions to problems is arguably politically infeasible. The stronger the Germanification of Swiss federalism, the higher the likelihood of further slowing down a system that already suffers from slowness. Swiss corporatism has been effective, at the price of transparency and the jurisdiction of institutions and actors of representative democracy. Immigration has prompted considerable concern among Swiss voters about house prices, jobs, the use of infrastructure and national identity. The Swiss People’s Party is among the strongest right-wing populist parties in Europe has been extremely successful in mobilizing xenophobic elements within the population, leading to breaches of fundamental rights of foreigners.

1) The country has failed to develop a sustainable relationship with the European Union, an entity on which it depends in many respects.

2) Climate policy is a crucial field in which Switzerland has failed to make swift and significant progress.

3) Reforms of the pension system were previously rejected in popular votes. A more limited reform was accepted in a popular vote in 2022.

4) There are significant shortcomings in the field of social justice and the ability to reconcile work and family life. Switzerland lags behind in terms of the social and political integration of foreigners.

5) Health policy faces major challenges. Costs are rising, and the political system lacks a clear strategy to curb this growth process.

6) The Swiss “winning formula” of negotiations and compromises has been undermined by political polarization – pitting the national-populist Swiss People’s Party against the moderate bourgeois block and the green-left parties – and by the organizational and political weakening of the interest organizations representing capital and labor.

7) The system of direct democracy has serious shortcomings such as the likelihood voters will approve constitutional amendments that cannot be implemented on legal or economic grounds, or that they block reform even when the need for change is urgent.

It seems probable 47 will escalate the chaos in Iran after 4PM today (Friday, 27-Mar-26), after the stock market has closed for most traders until Monday. He said he would wait until April 6 to strike (below), but when he comes to dates of aggression, he lies as a matter of course, believing in some too cute by half misdirection ploy that fools no one, he will lull Iran into unpreparedness. In his warped mind, it seems likely that he will undertake some insane escalation as a No Kings3 protest distraction:

“Trump extends pause on striking Iranian energy plants by 10 days; BBC; 26-Mar-26; https://www.bbc.com/news/live/cre0vl84qy9t?page=6 President Trump has posted on Truth Social, extending a pause on striking Iranian energy plants, which he announced on Monday. He also says talks between the US and Iran are "ongoing". The post says: "As per Iranian Government request, please let this statement serve to represent that I am pausing the period of Energy Plant destruction by 10 Days to Monday, April 6, 2026, at 8 P.M., Eastern Time. Talks are ongoing and, despite erroneous statements to the contrary by the Fake News Media, and others, they are going very well. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP"”

A BBC article that dropped after I drafted the above text seems to agree: Diplomats say expectations are low. "There is a lot of smoke and mirrors," one said. "There is scepticism that a trusted channel of communication that can bear some load will emerge." But for now the president insists talks are taking place and they are going well. However, delaying an attack on energy infrastructure also gives the US time to prepare for that attack - and maybe more. All these forces are going to take time to assemble, time Trump has just bought himself. But to what end? Is the president giving himself military options? Is he actually planning a ground invasion of strategic locations in Iran? https://removepaywalls.com/https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c2evg2m3ye2o

I think Trump's pause is just a ploy to wait until the rest of the Marines are in place. Then they'll do... whatever it is they'll do.

Kelvin Hobbs's avatar

I agree that he is waiting for the Marines and the 82nd Airborne troops to be in position, but think that in equal measure, he was waiting for the stock markets to close today. Recall the initial 5 day pause from Monday was until today or Saturday, which then extended until April 6. The first was to try to calm the markets. It backfired magnificently. Now both are in play, waiting for troops and building a lie for the markets before Monday if he follows his script by falsely promising time only to strike soon after the promise is given. I think that also in play is the fact that a ground attack or some material war crime with interrupt the news cycle over the weekend that right now will be focused on No Kings Day. He is drowning in the sh*t-mess he has made.

Robot Bender's avatar

Given the forces on hand, I'm not sure what they can do right now. 🤔 I have my doubts they could hold much of anything. We'll see.

Your post is a fraud

Kelvin Hobbs's avatar

I have seen language misquoted because taken out of context, but yours gets two prizes, one for distortion and the other for intellectual dishonesty. Here is the portion of my post that you quoted in isolation, as if it were a declarative proposition (which, of course, it was not): "he will lull Iran into unpreparedness". I did not say that no matter how much you lie.

Here is all of the language in that clause as posted and in context: “when he comes to dates of aggression, he lies as a matter of course, believing in some too cute by half misdirection ploy that fools no one, he will lull Iran into unpreparedness.” What I said was:

1. Trump sets dates in the future tied to threatened aggression to occur if he does not get his way. He has attacked during negotiation (twice) after promising to wait (which he didn’t either time), which confirms that he lies, just as I posted to be the case.

2. It was apparent both from my posted and the linked BBC article, that it appears that Trump is attempting to create some kind of strategic deception by stating he would wait to attack first until today or tomorrow based on the earlier 5 day pause, now until April 6 (from my post) with no intention of waiting because the markets are cratering almost as fast as his poll numbers and he almost certainly will do something disastrous to shift attention away from No Kings Day, “believing in some too cute by half misdirection ploy that fools no one.”

3. The ploy, doomed from jump street to fail, was that “he will lull Iran into unpreparedness.” Iran will not be lulled or deceived. Iran has waited and planned for this for 47 years as an attempt to induce the a stupid US leader (none of Carter, Reagan, Bush 41, Clinton, Bush 43, Obama or Biden, all of the non-Trump presidents from 1979-2025 were stupid enough to attempt what he has done recklessly and without a plan). He was surprised that Iran attacked neighboring states where US bases are? He was surprised that Iran took control of the Strait of Hormuz? He was surprised that by decapitating the Ayatollah the more hardline IRGC gained more influence and now controls the war’s outcome. Seriously? He is an idiot.

You took my post, which clearly stated that the game that Trump is playing is one created in his mind, that fools no one beside him, especially Iran, and that somehow “he will lull Iran into unpreparedness.” They will not be any more than anyone here would be. Except you.

What was your point in lying as obviously and completely as you did?
