Gov. Andy Beshear on Winning as a Dem in a Red State

Gov. Andy Beshear joins me to expose the truth about Trump’s tariffs, Medicaid cuts, and the path forward for Democrats.

By Ben Meiselas

I just had one of the most eye-opening conversations I’ve had in a long time — with none other than Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear. And I want every single one of you to hear this because what we talked about goes far beyond Kentucky. It’s about what’s at stake for every working family in this country.

Donald Trump, in his usual out-of-touch delusion, just declared April 2nd “Liberation Day” — a day to celebrate his plan to impose even more tariffs. He says it’ll make everyone “super rich.” Right. Richer for who, exactly? Certainly not for the working families getting hammered by what Governor Beshear calls the “Trump Tax.”

And he’s right — call it what it is. When you pay more for gas, that’s the Trump Tax. When groceries skyrocket? Trump Tax. When young couples can’t afford to buy their first home because lumber costs are through the roof? Trump Tax. It’s not some abstract economic policy — it’s a direct attack on your wallet, your family, and your future. And guess what? Every economist not on Trump’s payroll says it’ll tank the economy and potentially drag us into a recession.

Beshear didn’t pull punches. He laid it out: these tariffs disproportionately hurt Kentucky, whose top export partner is Canada. He told me plainly — this isn’t partisan. It’s math. And it’s people’s lives.

And that’s not all. Trump and his billionaire cronies — Musk included — are also pushing devastating cuts to Medicaid. In Kentucky, Medicaid covers half of all children. It pays for 70% of long-term care for seniors. And in rural America, it’s the backbone of the health system. Cut it, and you don’t just hurt those on Medicaid — you collapse entire communities. Hospitals close. Jobs vanish. People die. Period.

Listen to interviews like this and more on the MeidasTouch Podcast on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

But what really struck me about Governor Beshear is how he wins in a so-called “red state” without caving to the right-wing culture war garbage. He vetoed the most vile anti-LGBTQ+ bill in the state — during an election year — and then told voters exactly why: because his faith teaches him that all children are children of God. That’s leadership. That’s authenticity. And guess what? Voters respected it.

He said something that stuck with me — that Democrats need to focus on people’s everyday worries: jobs, health care, schools, roads, safety. Not just sanitized talking points, but real conversations with real people. And when you do that, you can fight the culture wars and deliver for working families. It’s not either/or. It’s both.

So why are so many Democrats still afraid to stand tall? Why are some still trying to win elections by mimicking MAGA cruelty, instead of leading with purpose and heart? If a Democratic governor in Kentucky can unapologetically stand up for LGBTQ+ kids while creating jobs and cutting commute times for working families — what’s the excuse everywhere else?

While Trump posts about his fake golf trophies and strokes his own ego while Americans suffer, leaders like Andy Beshear are showing what real public service looks like — building clinics, opening factories, making people’s lives better.

As Governor Beshear told me, this is a test of our humanity and our empathy. And the stakes couldn’t be higher.

We can’t let a con man who lies, bullies, and brags while families struggle dictate our future. We have to fight back. Not with fear — but with truth, compassion, and bold leadership.

Let’s get to work.

Diverse women are the future of the Democrats. We don't need more rich white men like Beshear, Schumer, Newsom, etc. AOC, Elizabeth Warren, and Jasmine Crockett are much more attractive to young voters. https://democracydefender2025.substack.com/p/women-will-save-our-democracy

omg quit with the identity politics. Anyone with a good heart and good message is welcome. This insufferable need to disqualify people based on their genetic and income profile is so stupid. You honestly think men have no contribution to saving democracy? Not even going to click on your self serving link.

Yeah, but even gen z particularly men weren’t too keen on a female candidate. Overall, we NEED to have an actual primary in 2028, where the best person wins without DNC manipulation.

We better do something before 2028. We won't have a leg to stand on in 2028. We need to do something like - now.

It is up to us to do something. Join Country First. Go to the rallies. Help me in emailing media companies like ABC, NBC, CNN and MSNBC and asking them why they aren't covering all the rallies that are happening throughout the country by millions of Americans.

Expand full comment
CJ Bear's avatar

Sylvia, More importantly we need to ask them why they aren't cover the constitutional crisis he and Musk have created. Why they aren't cover the number of laws he has broken and name the heads of these organization that might face jail term if one of these judges get a big enough set of balls to decide to hold someone in contempt. More of this kind of action just might slow the orange one down. Can you see it? Musk behind bars. We need to put more pressure on these judges to follow through on these contempt charges just as they would do for you and I. No fines, just some time in a locked cell and the possibility of a criminal record.

That's EXACTLY what the misogynists want you to think. Do not obey in advance. We were "not supposed to be there yet" when Obama ran and won - twice. Listen to your words. I'm sorry, but they are outrageous and shameful. Hillary Clinton got 3 million more votes than Trump - a larger margin than Biden beat Trump or Trump beat Harris. Educate yourself.

The Rebellion's avatar

I like your spunk but we have hindsight now. Either Harris was the wrong candidate or we just aren't there yet. Something went wrong we have to be honest with ourselves about that.

Expand full comment
MJ Delaney's avatar

Look at the FACTS and the extensive analysis done in "hindsight" about what "went wrong". It has NOTHING, ZERO ZIP NADA to do with Harris' gender. THAT is the problem with your SCREAMINGLY offensive misogynist comment. What you call my "spunk" is an expression of stunned outrage having familiarized myself with the real ifactual ssues around the Democratic loss in 2024. I would respectfully suggest you do some homework and lose the sexist snark.

Hate to disagree, but it absolutely does have to do with gender--as far as the republiCRAPS (REAL conservative--anti women's rights ones, that is) go.

Expand full comment
MJ Delaney's avatar

Again and again, look it up. Read. Get the FACTS Do the work. Get the truth. There is analysis out there that will show you that gender had NOTHING TO DO WITH Harris’ results. Whining that she lost because she’s a woman is wrong. Period. Full stop. And repeating it, is judgmental, hurts women and is grossly uninformed and unfair.

It's more important to do what's right than play to whims. Strong governmental leadership is needed, not more optics & politics. The problem has been in communication, not that candidates were women. Most people are going to support strong, clear leadership, regardless of "identity". The Felon only seized power because he played a strong leader on TV & people didn't look seriously enough at what skills & character traits are really needed. We need leaders that communicate well & have the skills & ethics to back it up. Anything else is secondary. Like this cat said, people can work with differences when someone is willing to stand for what they believe in.

I rarely anyone talking about the maga voter regulations and the maga poll workers who sent many voters (especially black voters in places like Georgia) away telling them that they had been excluded from the list of registered voters. Many were offered provisional ballots that were never counted. I am not a conspiracy nut, but I think between that and Elon's Starlink there was a lot of manipulation that excluded many votes.

I would absolutely LOVE to see a woman in the White House. Men have been rulers of this country for over 200 years, and look where they have gotten us. Unfortunately, I don’t think the country is ready. As wonderful as Kamala is, I think misogyny tipped the scale. I literally have heard several men I know state they did not vote for her because she was a woman. I was shocked to the core as I never suspected misogyny in their case. I think a lot of misogyny is not obvious, and there is more of it than we suspect. AOC or Jasmine on the ticket would be my dream!

Sorry if you are seeing my reply twice. When I tried to reply it disappeared. Basically what I said, is we can’t take chances with a woman presidential candidate this time. I’m sorry, but it didn’t work out with Kamala Harris and we are in a big mess right now. I admire the women you mentioned above but there is a possibility that some American’s just aren’t ready. We can’t risk it. I hope I have to eat my words someday but I think, for now, it has to be a man. 🙁🤷‍♀️

Buit the problem seems to be an aversion to females as leaders - it's an old, old thing that too many women themselves are guilty of, but if that is the case, then a male it has to be - rather a successful male than a failed female - not her fault at all - the fault of ignorance & traditions people can't get past !

Expand full comment
Karin Wood's avatar

Not so sure. We thought that with Kamala Harris and it backfired. I can’t believe I’m saying this but we cannot take any chances re: next election. I think the next presidential candidate should be a man. Disgusting statement I know, but we cannot take any chances. Don’t get me wrong I admire all the women you mentioned above - they are awesome, at this point and time I think it’s too risky. I’m more than happy to eat more words someday.

Chris Murphy and Andy Beshear need to organize the Democrat opposition. We need unity and a strong spokesperson to represent all of us - the Democrats, Independents, people protesting in the streets, lawyers fighting back, students, etc. We need a loyal opposition with a loud and clear message and a leader to shout our message about the Trump/Musk danger - hold daily press conferences - give examples - show that our message is united. We need united leadership under one effective voice backed by all the other good Democrats to lead our way. I think the Democrats have a huge problem with destroying people in their own party for very minor reasons Like the former Senator from Minnesota whose name I can’t remember for an action when he was a comedian, the only other person involved accepted his apology, but others forced him to resign

I just don't know what the plan is to fix this since the echo of crickets are louder that the dissent. Will the campaign the Dems put forward midterms to simply be, "see, we told you so?" That didn't work the last time. I want to get up in the morning and scream, "where are you?"

He is telling how he won and again no one is listening. Starlink is allegedly linked to our ballot machines. No candidate has ever gotten close to the number of electoral votes as 45/47. Some ballots were Democrat all the way and then 45/47 was voted for as President on that ballot. We have been hoodwinked, screwed, 45/47 admitted it and no one listened.

I was born and raised in Kentucky but escaped to California 30 years ago. As a lesbian and a liberal, there was no other choice. Andy is about the only good politician to come out of Kentucky. He has the right heart and the smarts for true leadership for the people. I adore him, but of course, my MAGAt family back there hate him even though he has done a lot for them.

I agreed to run for office last year, and I’m in the most conservative district (big rural area mixed with a couple of suburban neighborhoods) in my county. There are lots of Trump signs around me. Being a Kentucky country girl at heart, I did what came natural to me. I knocked on a lot of doors and talked to people, and I listened. I even helped fix a gate while I was canvassing. My conservative opponent, the incumbent, who was born and raised here and even outed me didn’t knock on hardly any doors. I beat her by 13 points. People want to know their elected officials just like Andy said. I do hope he runs for president, but if we want to help him win, we need to follow his lead. Our canvassers need to be out in middle America knocking on doors and talking WITH people not at them. We need to learn to relax and have an easy conversation with regular words, not talk down to people like college professors. I have a masters. I can do that, but I didn’t, and I won my election.

Thanks for bringing Andy on. We needed to hear his message.

Gov. Beshear is a good man with solid values that clearly resonate with his constituents. It is odd that they then also believe what MAGA candidates said, the lies. This is where Democrats make inroads, by showing that voters were lied to, and that the ultimate goal of this administration is to raise up the wealthy by dumping on the rest of us. The majority of us all want the same things when it comes down to it, the MAGA loyal will never change their minds, but they are not big enough to fight of the rest of us if we are willing to stand together and vote out the Republicans in office in 2026, so we can start righting the ship before it sinks. We need both parties without MAGA to do the hard work and honestly look at how we got here and agree on remedies that will keep this from ever happening again. The Republican Party has to remake itself as does the Democratic Party. WE the People need to be able to trust you the way Gov. Beshear is trusted.

When we call ourselves republicans, or democrats, red states or blue states, or liberals or conservatives, that is the end of the United States of America and the start of the National Socialist party, or as it was commonly called in Germany; the Nazi party. This culminates, by controlling the News, or as it’s beginning to be called “ propaganda”; controlling the” judicial system”; controlling the Legislative system; and having one Supreme Leader, “ the Fuhrer. This one man who makes everyone believe that only he can defeat the common enemy that he has created. Thus didn’t work in Germany, and it sure as HELL isn’t gonna work here. The United States is teetering on the precipice, and which way it lands; could mean the end of the idea of Democracy, the declaration of independence, and our Constitution

I beg to differ with the perception that "no one seems to be doing anything". We have been weened on this notion of the MCU version of fighting (Thanos one one side of the field battling against The Avengers on the other). It makes for good spectacle but that is not how wars are won.

Democrats shouted from the roof tops about T___p and this moment. No one cared. They rallied around the ideas of decency and the threat to our democracy. No one cared. They bought out the big guns to drive home the message that T---p was lying and a danger. They talked policy difference and challenged him head on (remember our euphoria after the Harris debates? Surely that would break through!). No one cared. People still elected this twice impeached, 34 count felon, assault predator to be President. Maybe we should stop thinking that the "right" messaging and creating showdown fights could have and will win for us. Shoulda, woulda, coulda. Who cares!

You know what was critical in the win for WWII? Yes, the "MCU moment" battles like D-Day, Iwo Jima, etc were key. But the quiet work of Alan Turing's cracking the German communication code was the turning point in the Allied victory. As was the resistance movement, the Navajo Code Talkers and thousands of other efforts that were not pubic spectacles.

Stop being so self critical! Perhaps our side is doing the right thing. Doing the critical work (fighting in the courts, doing town halls, pushing back with media like Meidas Touch, etc.). It is a grind. An inch by inch gain. Not spectacles, but setting the stage for our victory. We will have our MCU battle moment.

However, the environment is so divisive it is hard to imagine who would want to run for office. We can only HOPE.

I'm Canadian and this is the first time I've seen Andy Beshear speak. He's a breath of fresh air after seeing the lack of leadership in the States. He's guided by his faith and that's a very big deal. It doesn't matter that my faith may be different than his, he's working for what's right for the people, not the chosen few. He's one of the extremely small group of politicians that is standing up to the power-greedy bullies that are currently in charge. I hope this galvanizes other "leaders" to step up and do their jobs properly, for the people.

People need to start using facts against Maga. In 2020 federal spending was 30% of GDP under Trump. Deficit spending increased historically under the Trump presidency between 2017 and 2021 when he was in office and promised to bring down deficits. He didn’t because his unprecedented tax cuts for corporations bringing down the rate from 35% to 21% decreased revenues for the US government which increased deficit spending.

Years ago, I was running for mayor in a small rural town. Soon after I was elected I was sent to a meeting of the League of Oregon Cities. One of the speakers was former Oregon Governor Vic Atiyeh, a Republican.

The advice he gave, words that I lived by when I was mayor, served me well.

Namely, "Do what you think is right. If people agree, they will re-elect you. If they don't agree, they won't re-elect you."

That basic rule was at the bottom of every decision, the easy ones and the controversial ones, I made.

When I ran again I was not only re-elected, no one bothered to run against me. Why? I was honest. Never once compromised my integrity.
