Gov. Murphy Fires Back After Trump Prosecutor Threatens Him on Fox

In our wide-ranging interview, the New Jersey governor dismantles Trump’s chaos and lays out what’s really happening on the ground.

By Ben Meiselas

When a rogue MAGA-appointed interim U.S. Attorney uses Fox News to launch a political stunt and announce an “investigation” into a sitting governor, you know we’ve entered banana republic territory. So I brought on Governor Phil Murphy of New Jersey for an exclusive MeidasTouch interview to respond—and his takedown didn’t disappoint.

In case you missed it, Alina Habba—yes, Trump’s former personal lawyer turned federal prosecutor (because that’s normal now)—went on Hannity and said she was launching a criminal investigation into Governor Murphy for following state law enforcement guidelines that prioritize actual crime-fighting over xenophobic theatrics. Murphy brushed of Habba’s threats: “Ben, for whatever reason, I missed my normal Sean Hannity show last night, so forgive me.” Murphy corrected the record on Habba’s lies: “We go after criminals. Period. Regardless of immigration status.”

Let that sink in. The state with the lowest gun violence rate in the country is being attacked for how it enforces the law. It’s not about crime. It’s not about justice. It’s cosplay authoritarianism from the Trump regime, broadcast live on Fox News.

But this interview wasn’t just about defending against nonsense. We covered the total economic chaos coming from Trump’s pretend presidency—from whiplash-inducing tariff changes to an imploding bond market. Governor Murphy, a former ambassador and business leader, didn’t mince words: “This is the Flintstones executing policy… it’s not efficiency—it’s cruelty.”

Murphy exposed the dangers of Trump’s erratic economic experiments and the long-term damage to America’s global credibility. As former U.S. Ambassador to Germany, he described the heartbreak of seeing our closest allies lose faith in us.

We also got into the numbers. Trump shrunk his margin in New Jersey in 2024—and yes, that raised eyebrows. But as Murphy told me, it was more about Trump personally than any broader GOP shift. Even where Trump narrowly won counties, Democrats still swept down-ballot races.

And now, the tide may be turning again. “The ground is shifting,” Murphy said, pointing to massive protest turnouts and grassroots energy reminiscent of the 2018 blue wave. “You’re seeing more and more reasonable Americans saying, ‘I didn’t sign up for this chaos.’”

This conversation with Governor Murphy was a masterclass in what competent, honest leadership looks like, especially in contrast to the criminal clown show trying to destroy our democracy. And it’s thanks to you that MeidasTouch is now the first destination the biggest politicians go to when big news breaks. Because together, this community is shaping the conversation.

Let’s keep exposing the truth. Let’s keep building this movement.
