This makes me think...

We need to do Billboards like George Conway did...put the "news" where everyone can see it. All along major routes where billboards are. Just a thought...not just in CA, but everywhere.

We need a TRUTH campaign outside Meidas too because here we are mostly preaching to the choir. "They" aren't coming here so we need to take it to them...where they can't miss the messages.

The marches are one good way, but lets do more.

I agree - I'm in Canada but our government had some paid billboards in red states when trump first started threatening tarrifs - to try to educate on the damage it would cause to citizens but...it probably fell on deaf ears at the time because these people are feasting on truth social and fox news every day. They are totally clueless as to what is really going on OR...they support it because they hate brown and black people and LBGTQ+ members so much that they are willing to support this idiot no matter what he does. It won't be until the shelves are empty along with their stomachs that they might start to realize that maybe trump is to blame...then it might help to put billboards out there to educate people. Many will still probably blame Biden though because the clown told them that's who was responsible.

It a good idea to get messages out. So much of the media is controlled by right wing interests. Dems need to work on messaging. They need soundbites that encapsulate bigger ideas, and that are memorable.

Expand full comment
CARLA HEISTEN's avatar

Cash Peters says Dems need a STORY and a person to deliver it. That is what orange did...he created this story about how they were all victims and how he knew how to fix all their problems and be their big daddy protector. That is the bigger idea we lack.

The Dem narrative is built on points and promises and you would think...but the STORY won. People could buy into it, feel a part of it.

We need a story, to reword and rework the narrative. Look what Obama did...a story about fixing the economy...an amazing orator who had the cred and the beautiful family. He created a story of how well we would do with him in charge.

Kamala didn't have time to fully create the story...it was about freedom and joy and while those are values they aren't a story about how it will become our way of life under her. It was enough...she did win. He stole it, and stole the narrative. Dems didn't have proof enough at the time and no way to come back because he already stole the rigged election story for his own.

Check out Cash Peters on this particular video...worth the watch for the concept.

Expand full comment
James Seever's avatar

I agree, but the orange dude also used slogans and soundbites for the voters who wanted to latch on to simpler things. Truth did not / does not matter to him. Any news is good news, and whatever sticks is what they'll use... "immigrants eating dogs and cats" for example &omfg. Dems need a truthier way of doing the same, in addition to story. Plus Dems need to be more cohesive. They work against one another and it is disastrous.

CARLA HEISTEN's avatar

We can't change all minds. Some will always say the rump days were the best days. I am talking about the future. Things aren't always going to be like this. The prices are climbing. There are future elections and honestly, this regime will end. We need to plan ahead. NOW. Orange was running, doing the story for 4 full years. Time to get our story is now. I don't care what matters to him. We can't control him or those who are so far up his butt they can't get out, but there are far too many who didn't even get off their butts to vote last time out. Let's look ahead. We are not going back. He is not going to be around that long. I'm figuring fall...he will. And we need to be ready.

How about if we LEARN from orange? Not to lie, but to be THERE...to speak up and push our narrative, instead of always hoping his magas will not believe what he says. When he says they eat dogs and cats we need to be ready to respond with our truthy story. We can't rely on them NOT listening to them. Let's us give them something better to believe in! We can truthfully give them something much more hopeful and joyful to believe in.

And yes, MEDIA is a huge issue. They own the media...and why? Because he threatens them. This is why billboards, bus adverts, and even signs and flags. I have a "We the People" flag at my home. My friend flies her USA flag upside down. They do it...why can't we??? Flags can be tasteful and not tacky if you choose well.

The story should be self-explanatory. Trump is a fascist and all will be lost unless dems are elected. Them stealing all our tax revenue to give to themselves

Expand full comment
CARLA HEISTEN's avatar

Yes, but who is the focus of this narrative?

How about a focus on what we want to do, who we are? All the "they are bad" says is that we are against them and what they believe and have been told. When you push on someone's beliefs they push back.

We need to build a story about the kind of world we want to create. It was there, but not fully developed in Kamala's short run. We didn't have time to flesh it out and make it as appealing as it could be. All we had was a foundation with no building on top, so it wasn't seen.

They had a whole fascist plan...in writing no less.

They had already created enemies out of us...saying we want to destroy America...projecting all their nasty stuff on the "libs".

That was before the Nov election. So THAT sealed our o/w open minds that there's red meat out here in them-thar hills and flats...not that we didn't really know.

Then we kept east and when we got near Elco, we saw a giant billboard: FAITH. FAMILY. FREEDOM.

I commented that these folks might have forgot to add FELON, but my bad, I just kept driving, trying really hard not to over-react.

So, how about all sane, peaceful, American, reasonable, Freedom-Loving, Family-Forever, Faith-Accepting people do what Carla suggests; litter the freeking roadways with real news, real truth, nonpartisan, non-cynical information that you just can't miss on our nation's highways and byways. I live in California and Gavin Newsom has done an excellent job.

I hate to disappoint you but "true progressives" will never win a presidential election. Look at the last election- 47% for Harris, 49% for trump, and the rest of those who bothered to vote went third party because "Harris wasn't progressive enough". Thanks a lot! And look at the election before that: Bernie was on every primary but only won in one state. How was he supposed to win the presidency when he couldn't win the primary? And don't give me bs about the DNC. Be real! Fight for progressive causes! Yes! But president? Won't happen in this century.

Trump is just a useful idiot ,it's the A Holes around him the Vought's and Project 2025 people. The goal is to crash the economy. Trump is just a mob boss there for revenge, money and power.

I have a love-hate relationship with Gov. Newsome, but on the whole, I'm glad he's a Democrat. He's tough, well-spoken and an activist. We need more like him shaking up our thinking and upending the Trump regime in every way possible. California is a leader state in so many ways.

It’s sad that Newsom, who hurt his political ambitions with his podcast of crazies, is leading a fight with Trump while many other Dems are not, or at least they aren’t advertising it. Did Schumer write another letter after the ICE incident yesterday???

I don’t think he ruined his chances. I think the problem is the people on the left that play canceled culture and purity politics. It’s why we have Trump to begin with if they keep it up we will lose again if we even have an election in 2028.

Why are we blaming people on the left, & not those in the center or on the right with their lack of empathy for Trump winning? I don’t think that defending my trans kids by not going to/buying from places that are anti-lgbtq or anti- DEI is wrong. Hell will freeze over before I change my attitude on that.

Agree with most of the comments here. Newsom is not the type of genuine and principled leader that is required to meet this critical moment in history. Go home, Gavin. We need leaders like Murphy, Buttigieg, Auchincloss, AOC.

BS! He has outwardly fought against Trump for years, well before any other Governors or sitting members of Congress! Trump is afraid of Gavin. If he runs I and many will vote for him. I live in California and he has done an excellent job!!

Because he has far right people on his podcast he is not genuine or principled? Are Democrats so insecure in their principles that they are threatened by listening to loud mouth right wingers? Jeez, it is as if you're afraid of being converted!

I have no problem speaking with, or trying to speak with, those on the far right if you are going to stand firm on your principles and illustrate for the Bannon's and the Kirk's of this world the mendacity and recklessness of their malicious propaganda. But if your just going to platform them and engage in milquetoast and conciliatory dialog, then yes, fuck that.

And I have no intention of being converted to fascist, imbecilic ideology. I prefer leaders with virtue and character, of which there are none on the right. Not one. In my view, his lack of genuineness and principle has less to do with his asinine podcast, and more to do with his air of being completely consumed with the useless advice of high priced political consultants and their focus group tested vacant platitudes. We need leadership that understands the the existential crisis in which we find ourselves, and make no mistake, that is exactly where we are.
