SPEAKER 3
I'm joined by House Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Congressman, yesterday Donald Trump held a press conference while he was once again on vacation. He threatened President Zelensky of Ukraine and he called Zelensky a dictator. I want to play the clip and I want to get your response to it. Let's play it first.
0:19
SPEAKER 1
Like a fiddle. He played him like a fiddle. That's an expression we use, yes sir, to say that he's pretty easy, pretty easy. A dictator without elections. Zelensky better move faster. He's not going to have a country left. Got to move. Got to move fast.

SPEAKER 4
What's your response, Congressman? President Zelensky is not a dictator. He was a duly elected president of Ukraine. It's just stunning that Donald Trump continues to just lie so effortlessly to the American people. We know that President Zelensky is a champion for democracy, freedom, and truth, and an important ally to the United States of America. It's shocking,

Hakeem Jeffries Shares with MeidasTouch the Plan to Stop Trump's Agenda

Watch our new exclusive interview with Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

I just had the privilege of sitting down with House Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries on the MeidasTouch Podcast. We dove straight into it—Trump’s latest unhinged rant about Ukraine, his endless lies, the cowardice of his Republican enablers—and what the heck Democrats and regular Americans can and will do to stop Trump.

Let’s start with the obvious: Donald Trump called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky a dictator. That’s right—the guy actually fighting for democracy against Putin, the dictator Trump idolizes, is now a “dictator” in Trump’s twisted, upside-down world. It’s not just a lie—it’s deliberate propaganda meant to weaken support for Ukraine while Trump once again cozies up to Putin.

And where are the Republicans? Hiding. Pretending they didn’t hear what Trump said. Jeffries laid it out clearly: “Hypocrisy is not a constraint to their behavior.” These MAGA extremists have no shame, no integrity, no backbone.

Jeffries made it crystal clear: Trump and his enablers want to discourage us. They want to exhaust us. They want us to throw up our hands and say, “What’s the point?” But we will not bend the knee to Trump. We will not let them break our spirit. We will fight on every front—Congress, the courts, and most importantly, in our communities.

This isn’t just about politics. This is about real life. Jeffries walked through the Republicans’ actual plans—$4.5 trillion in tax cuts for the billionaires, while gutting Medicaid, education, veterans’ benefits, and food assistance for struggling families. These people don’t govern; they loot the government for themselves and their rich donors while making working people suffer.

And if that wasn’t enough, we’re now dealing with a Trump-era Frankenstein monster: Elon Musk embedding himself inside our government like a parasite. He’s slithering into federal agencies, gaining access to private financial and social security data, all while Trump hands him the keys to the country like some dystopian oligarch. What the hell is that about?

But here’s the good news—we have the power to stop this.

Jeffries reminded us that we’ve done it before. In 2017, Trump and the GOP tried to repeal the Affordable Care Act. They had the numbers. They had the power. But the American people mobilized. We marched. We called. We showed up in every way imaginable. And we won. Trump was humiliated, and his top legislative priority went up in flames.

That’s part of the playbook. And that’s what we’re going to do again.

As you listen to Jeffries other thoughts on Trump 2.0, I want you to keep this in mind: We are not powerless. We are not alone. There are tens of millions of us who refuse to let our democracy be hijacked by a criminal, a coward, and a con man. So, if you’re asking “What can I do?”—start here:

  • Call your representatives. Make them feel the pressure.

  • Show up—protests, town halls, community meetings. Your presence matters.

  • Support independent media that tells the truth. (You’re here, so you already get it.)

  • Organize. Mobilize.

This is not the time to back down. This is the moment to rise up.

We’ve faced authoritarianism before, and we’ve beaten it. We’ll do it again. But it takes all of us.

Let’s go.

I am so tired of hearing the same talking heads who deliver zero results. We don't need Jeffries to tell us Trump lies. We know he lies. We need Jeffries to DO something besides run his mouth.

What can he do? Start with some energized rallies. I like Jeffries, but he is too nice for this job right now. "Come together" is not going to cut it right now. I have no desire to come together with people who look the other way while Trump hands over Eastern Europe to Putin.

This used to be a thing when their reelection was on the line because people might not vote for them but in today’s world where Trump makes statements about Musk saying “He knows those computers better than anybody. All those computers. Those vote-counting computers. And we ended up winning Pennsylvania like in a landslide." - well we can’t even be sure that they care about our votes.

It has been said in many ways and by people who have worked in a Senator’s or Congressperson’s office that the best way to be a real influence is to call not write. Also, go to town halls. I am calling my Congressman every day I can. I have three numbers to his office to choose from. CALL YOUR SENATORS. Oh, and call your Congressperson.

I called and emailed Rep.Tom Kean, R-NJ. I get either a generic letter that doesn't address my issues or when I call they make excuses why he hasn't arranged a town hall. I also called and emailed Sen.Andy Kim, D-NJ and no response. Frankly, I'm disgusted with our country.

Did you ever see the movie The Shawshank Redemption? One of the key characters (played by Tim Robbins) was imprisoned for a murder he didn't commit, but he never lost hope; "Hope is a good thing," he would say.

When he got a work assignment in the prison library he wrote to the same person every day for many weeks (maybe years, I forget now, but it was a long time) asking to donate books to the library. He never got an answer until one day a load of books and records arrived with a response to his letters.

Please keep bugging your representatives every day. Demand answers to your questions. Make them worry they won't get reelected. Call them out on social media and demand a town hall. Hope IS a good thing, and so is persistence.

Thank you for your question. It's a good one. All means of voting are vulnerable. There are investigations starting about how Trump was able to win, and it appears that there was fraud. We will have to wait to see how it was done, but I think that it was done electronically. It only takes milliseconds to intercept a transmission and alter it. Elon Musk is capable of doing that.

I have a very dark theory on that and mind you it's only a theory.

The Dems could see the writing on the wall in two aspects. First, they knew that if it was proven before inauguration Maga would start a civil war. They knew it would eventually come out and the Dems would then have the advantage. Independent investigators are on the precipice of showing how Elon did it. More than anything else I think that is why they are moving so quickly to destroy any institution that could stand against them.

Second, The darkest theory, is that they see the writing on the wall and know that the bird flu is here and will become a pandemic shortly. Most scientists agree with that. It appears that the strains most likely to go airborne causing the pandemic have a much higher mortality rate than the first go-around. Long story short they don't want to have to claim responsibility for the millions dead. They will be happy to come in and clean up Cheetos mess and be the white night so to speak solidifying power for at least a generation.

These are the only two reasons racking my brain I can think of and both are very dark reasons.... sorry 😥

Michael Christie's avatar

Both of your theories sound like they carry water. We need to have a new conservative party start up, that will draw congressmen and senators away from maga. I don't think Jeffries can do anything else. He's a good leader I am not questioning that and neither should anyone else. He is just not a good leader for this moment in history. Here are my thoughts... Getting the party organized and everyone on the same page with the same talking points beating it into the public is like herding cats. You could have a great toy sitting in the middle of the room full of cats. Sure you'll get a couple of cats playing with it but most will sit there bored because the toy doesn't fight back. Now as a leader we need a flute player of sorts. One that can distract and lead the rats out of the room and give a few key people laser pointers to get all the cats in the room totally involved. (Ie.. The laser beams are a few specific focused agenda items to non-stop hammer home.)

Example... A leader would tell AOC focus on X, Crockett focus on Y, Garcia you focus on z. And beat the living hell out of the media screaming it to the heavens for every person to see and completely taking over media. Those are the laser beam holders.

In the process of doing this the geriatrics that are out of touch with 'We the People' must be made to resign! By the time a special election is called momentum will completely be in our favor. We have a very deep bench and these geriatrics are just as corrupt and responsible for all this as the Republicans.

I for one will support any primary Challenger with all I have to any geriatric or wanna be good o'l boy that goes along with anything the Republicans put on the table. That especially includes Mark Kelly whom I donated hundreds to and gallego. They voted for Trump's appointees almost more than anyone else.

To the geriatrics and you know who you are...

I know you may think you can still help. Ginsburg thought the same thing. I have ENORMOUS respect for her but she really effed up by not bowing out earlier to ensure a liberal justice. Geriatrics you are doing the same thing! You will kill us all! Bow out now!

Do the right thing and relinquish. Go home knowing you did your best.

The worst of Darwin-ist survival of the fittest is imposed, let it sink to you, it is imposed - so learn to swim and win, folks!!

And, no, I don't enjoy having to teach the others who cherish the truth and facts - the sacred importance of self-defense - if that person doesn't have it in himself/herself, it becomes too excruciating efffin' frustrating to me. Jeffries, Schumer, and other Democrats must do what Mike Johnson and McConnell have always done - have daily or multiple daily news conferences (in a group not individually) and say exactly what Trump, Musk, and the Republican legislators are doing at that moment and criticize them strongly. When Mike Johnson and the Senate Republicans do that, the stories appear on the evening national news - that is what the public hears and repeats at work. Just do it and let the rest of the legislators go directly to their local news channels with their own news conferences. Be uniform about your talking point across every Democrat daily. That's what Republicans do. They do it consistently each day to focus and amplify their daily message. Don't think about it, do it like our country is disintegrating because it is. Be alarmists.

There are leaders, there are followers; some are talkers, some are do writers, some read and explain to others who don't read or comprehend, and some need somone to hold their hand and guide them. There is plenty to do, but we need the right people in the right place doing what they do best. Sometimes cracking the whip sends the horses in the other direction, especially when the team is already overwelmed. Right now I'd just like someone to say okay; stop, take a breath, and regroup. Yep, at long last!! I only wish Bernie Sanders had called himself Social-Liberal Democrat Progressive and never ever called himself a "socialist" because of the compromising nature of that word in too many American's minds, but, 'cept for that, Bernie Sanders is the bare minimum of where every Social-Liberal Democrat Progressive should be ideologically and practically!! Now the question is - is Bernie Sanders (due to his age and personal history) electable in USA the way it is - if not, then EVERY DEMOCRAT MUST BE LIKE BERNIE SANDERS IS NOW TO BEGIN WITH, AT THE BARE MINIMUM!!

Since this cursed nov. 6th 2024 until the even more cursed jan 20ieth 2025, I've been saying to Biden Administration - This is what my logic and life-experience tell me - this monstrous situation absolutely warrants the still Current Administration to very wisely use these days to find ways to STOP the transfer of power to the convicted criminal, traitor and stochastic terrorist tRumputin!! It is unprecedented but the evil of tRumputin-eVIlon musk-peter thiel-curtis yarvin-jdvance-terrorist putin's of russia corruption of this year's election is unprecedented - so finally - match up to him/them to disable him/them and beat him/them at his/their game, Biden Administration!! The negotiations about the Governing Rearrangement of USA need to start so that NO one opposite party rules the people NOR territories, incl. Washington DC as the most Democratic-voting territory in USA, who/which voted for the other opposite party!! That's the only fair solution to everybody and it should be peaceful. In any case, tRumputinists must be disallowed of their delusion that they can rule the NONtRumputinist and ANTItRumputinist Americans!!

The NONtRumputinist and ANTItRumputinist Americans run a huge risk of being exhausted, smothered, robbed financially, psychologically and physically (even murdered) if tRumputinists are given to grab the power and Democrats do nothing significant against it now! The NONtRumputinist and ANTItRumputinist Americans have only this one and only life that can NOT be and must NOT be endangered at any way any more!!!! Time to act is NOW as any upcoming month/year will only make the situation less solvable!!

IOW, I'd suggest the immediate negotiations between Democrats and Republicans (those that, hypothetically and hopefully, can be conversed with) about the Governing Rearrangement of USA based on where, i.e. territorially i.e. states incl. the cities and counties of course, who (Democrats or Republicans) won so that the governing is divided according to the way USA is, factually, divided by those votes. The goal being that is all fair and that NO opposite party can govern/rule the state, city, county where ONE of the two has won!!

The current Pentagon staff needs to take Washington D.C.'s Capitol and all the branches of Federal Government until the solution from the Governing Rearrangement negotiations is reached. I know it's unprecedented but this situation IS totally unprecedented.

but Biden's Administration as of the cursed nov. 6th 2024 onward did everything contrary to what I was saying - and here we are....... My conscience is really clear. Yours??

BEN - great job of bringing up issues to Hakeem Jeffries - unfortunately, his answers to your questions lacked a real definitive direction - I am so tired of hearing the Democratic leaders saying yes we have to do this. We have to do that - but then you don’t see them doing what they need to do!

Let’s ask speaker Jefferies to define the baseline issues that they are not going to budge on in negotiations with the Republicans - and then they also need to explain very loudly and very often what the Republicans are trying to get by with so that when the standoff comes down to a government shut down that everybody will know it is the Republicans who are to blame

And why aren’t they out there daily explaining what it is that Elon Musk and the muskrats are up to? Their job should be to inform everybody, to keep everybody informed about what’s going on and what they’re trying to do for us. Saying that the courts are fighting this is just too ambiguous. - please get Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jefferies back on again and keep asking them for answers - once again the Meidas Touch network is doing a GREAT JOB!

Ben / Meidas Team - can you get this idea to Democratic party leadership? ...

I was thinking ... If there's a way out of this (and that's a big "if", and would probably take at least a generation or more to repair the damage) ... There needs to be Constitutional amendments + enacting laws, similar to what had to happen post-Civil War with the 13th-14th-15th, and a prolonged real "Reconstruction" period. The 14th amendment needs to be fully restored to its original intent; the Voting Rights Act needs to be fully restored and expanded to ensure free & fair elections and equal access to the ballot and that all votes will be counted; the democracy-ending "Citizens United" decision needs to be nullified by constitutional amendment; the democracy-ending "presidential immunity" decision needs to be nullified by constitutional amendment and/or the No Kings Act; and a real Supreme Court reform law. This is the minimum, and by no means exhaustive, but would give a foundational start for rebuilding/restoring our democratic Republic. If every Democrat everywhere runs on this, repeatedly, for as long as it takes, I believe they can get to a two-thirds majority to do these things. Forget about the current Republican party - they're forever lost and unreachable at this point; we need to drive their numbers down to their fellow unreachable one-third base. I believe Democrats can do this if they research and learn from the history of how the "radical Republicans" accomplished it in the 1800s - they stayed united and focused and were relentless for a long enough period of time to do what they had to do in that period. If Democrats can get to moral clarity about just the basic fundamental constitutional amendments and laws needed right now to get our democracy back - and just run on that - without the litany of all of the other stuff (people can understand that we'll need that stuff too, but you have to start with the foundation first, then build from there). Overwhelming public sentiment and a national sense of common good/common humanity will be with us, just keep beating that drum over and over - ignore everything else for now - it will come naturally, and the communication/messaging will come naturally along with it. Say "we're rebuilding our nation's foundation and original intent with these specific amendments and laws" - keep repeating that to get to the two-thirds majority needed. Remember that two-thirds of the public will be open to supporting just that. Only focus on that, relentlessly, to keep that two-thirds of the public with us, remind them over and over again that it's just to reestablish the foundation. Stay focused enough to ignore all of the distractions that the unreachable one-third (that Republican base) will throw at us (their relentless "culture war" stuff while their oligarchy continues to destroy the fundamental foundations). Knock down their culture wars with one or two quick quips, then go back to reiterating the Constitutional amendments and laws we need to pass in order to get back to the basic fundamental foundation. Communicate just that, simply and relentlessly, to the reachable two-thirds to keep public sentiment with us just long enough to get those basics enacted. This is also what will rebuild the Democratic "brand" and trust. Summary: 1) Every Democrat, everywhere, make clear that we need to fundamentally repair our democracy before anything else. 2) Every Democrat, everywhere, use the same simple language to communicate the few Constitutional amendments and laws necessary to accomplish this repair. 3) Everywhere Democrat, everywhere, make clear that we need at least two-thirds Democratic majorities in the House and in the Senate (and a Democratic president) and two-thirds of the State legislatures and governorships to make all of this happen. 4) Every Democrat, everywhere, pledge to bring these amendments and laws as the first legislative acts of every session for full open debate and vote - in every place where they have a simple majority - until such time as they have two-thirds majorities to pass the Constitutional amendments (the legislation can pass with less than two-thirds); but, either way, gets votes on the record - then communicate clearly and relentlessly to the public how representatives and senators voted (and, remember, it's important to keep doing this every legislative session as voters have short memories; repetitiveness is key in order to use this to build/increase majorities each time until we reach the two-thirds majorities).

I’d like to know why Ben Meisslas did not ask the hard question: why are democratic leaders bringing a knife to a gun fight? This question was gently alluded to at one point but Jeffries successfully avoided it with the same useless platitudes that are totally insufficient for the moment. And Ben did not follow up to force a response to this critical question, which is his responsibility as a journalist. Jeffries seems to not realize the full gravity of the situation. There may be no elections in 2 years or the results will be rigged and the Justiciary will be totally neutered by the Supreme Court, currently owned Trump and the oligarchs The standard playbook of litigate, mobilize, to appeal to best in Americans will not cut it. The interview was so boring with the same talking points repeated ad nauseam. But I forced myself to listen to the end. Get AOC and Jasmine Crocket out there. Americans want to hear a dynamic exchange of ideas that will play to Americans of today, not the approach that might have been sufficient for a fight against George Bush in 2005, a generation ago. We are not the first country to slide into fascism. And we are not so ‘special’ that it can’t happen here. The Supreme Court is hijacked, the mainstream media is cowed, the government is being purged of dissenters, and ‘reality’ for millions of Americans is determined by Twitter. We are close to the point of no return. But Jeffries didn’t mention this issue once.

I liked the question that lead this conversation. In my own words: What can we do, what is being done to stop Trump’s rampage against democracy? I liked what Jeffries said in reply, giving specific actions that are being taken. It wasn’t until the end, though, that he got to the crux of the matter. That was that, when it came down to the big crises in America, the American people rose up in the name of our principles to reestablish freedom in Europe and bolster democracy in the world. The apathy in America that allowed the present state of affairs to arise was rooted (unwisely, but perhaps understandably) in the blind faith we have in our American ideals. Somehow the democratic people in America (note that I particularly did NOT use big-D Democratic) of all political persuasions need to reaffirm that the most important premise of our nation is that we all have the right, more profoundly, the DUTY to have opinions and rationally debate how our ideals are implemented by our leaders. That one topic, not the nits about individual issues that divide us on a superficial level, needs to be up front and foremost in our political conversation. We need to undertake this point with an even greater fervor than the extreme Right has expressed the fear and hate that fuels the Trump regime.

I know personally, for my family, we'll be evicted, have our car repossessed, owe bank fees for more than we receive and be unable to buy food or medicine. I understand It's illegal and someone will sue to reverse it and at some point the money might make it back into our accounts, but more will be owed in overdraft fees than will be deposited (poor people have to sign auto payment contracts for service)then there will be late fees and when everything is sorted - project 2025 has end SSA as a goal they have already started by firing too many staff and closing too many offices for the department to remain functional so it will just happen again. I, and everyone else, really need to know how to prepare for this because we don't have savings. We are not allowed to have savings. I'm terrified and I am only hearing it can't happen. Why are more people not talking about the National Economic Boycott on February 28? The more people that participate, the more effective it will be. This is something everyone can do. You don't have to go to DC, the state capital, or even downtown to a march. This will hit the corporations and the oligarchs where their true heart is, their wallets. It should be repeated at least monthly if not weekly. Everyone needs to buy locally whenever possible.

Ben asked all the right questions, but I’m sorry to say that Leader Jeffries missed the boat here. He bloodlessly talked about the pathways of legislation, litigation and mobilization yet he and most of his colleagues continue to do way too little to mobilize the public at a dangerous moment when Elon is continuing his blitzkreig against vital government agencies and Trump is working to end the era of American leadership for democracy abroad. I’m sorry, but talking about food prices is not going to cut it at a time when our Justice Department and FBI are being turned into tools of personal revenge and retribution, our health agencies destroyed, the lives of thousands of public servants devastated and their careers ended. Hitler was not stopped by opponents griping about the price of weiner schnitzels. Wake up, man!

Jeffries we know what they are doing! I don't give a s*** about you sitting there explaining it and explaining it and explaining it everyone knows! All you keep doing is talking to the hand! All you are is telling all of us you have no plan whatsoever! Stop running your mouth and organize! You can't even keep your caucus in line to oppose every single one of his pics. I swear on my life I will fund to the best of my ability every single primaried Democrat that has voted for any of Cheetos pics.

Is it impossible for the Democrats, who do not want to fight dirty, to take over the national narrative, somehow, finally taking it away from endless focus on Trump TrumpTrumpTrump and all the terrible stuff he's doing (that sells news on their media)? If the Dems can't get a real grip on media, especially Mainstream Media, then what hope is actually there, except for "hopes & prayers?"

The most important question not posed to the congressman: “WHO ARE THOSE 3 REPUBLICANS?” (Who are the 3 most vulnerable, susceptible, or maleable Republican congressmembers that we need to HAMMER (with calls, cards, visits, letters, visits, etc.)? Tell us! We’ll be there …!

He's going to bury them in paper...

Write letters until they all get paper cuts...

He's useless like Schumer, Adams and other do nothing Dems in DC...

They could have put safeguards in place but they didn't!! That's the sign of ignorance that gets the Dems in trouble everytime!!

Get a Dem in DC who's actually able to be 2 steps ahead of the MAGA, not 3 behind!!

Both of my Michigan Senaters voted to approve Several of Trump's appointments. Two along with several that did it several times! He doesn't address that. So in truth they have not done nothing but told them do what ever you want.

They have voted against several appointments. But for me one was too many. The ones they voted for are already doing Trump's and Musk's biddings.
