"But the parade may prove less consequential than the "No Kings" marches it sparked. In the biggest and broadest protests of his second term, millions of Americans in about 2,000 communities gathered to object to his assertion of unprecedented presidential powers that opponents say violate the Constitution.

"Photographs of protesters across the country filling plazas and marching across bridges were reminiscent of scenes from historic debates over the Civil Rights Movement, the Vietnam War and more. The American Civil Liberties Union, one of the sponsors of the demonstrations, estimated that 5 million people participated."

USA Today. Susan Page.

IMHO the number of protestors was more like 12 million. As Olbermann says, the parade drew a crowd equivalent to a minor league hockey game.

Here in Baghdad By the Sea, former 3 x Trump supporters are vocal. E.G. Miami healthcare CEO Michael “Mike” B. Fernandez wrote the following open letter to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and members of the Republican Cuban-American Miami-Dade congressional delegation: U.S. Reps. Mario Diaz-Balart, Carlos Giménez and Maria Elvira Salazar.

For decades, I have stood with you in defense of the freedoms we cherish, those we were denied in the country of our birth and found in the grace of this one. I know what it means to flee tyranny. Like you, I carry that history in my bones and that pain in my heart. But like a growing number in our community, I have watched with dismay as the very values we once found sanctuary in are now being attacked by a previously unthinkable threat — the sitting president of the United States.

Dad never missed mass was a knights of Columbus member and in a wheel chair ass a paraplegic from WW II. He always was in the front of the church for mass on the side and we sat there in the front row. This pope may bring many of us back with his strong humanity.

Teri, I am so sorry for this neglect given to your dear and brave father. And the pain has lasted for all these years. If it is possible, you might write a letter to that priest, letting him know how this neglect has hurt you and your family, as this will open his heart to regret, and feeling of even guilt as he reflects on the speed he put that speech together, maybe even taking it out of folder he keeps pre-written eulogies in, to save himself time. This note could go to his successor, if he has left. It will bring a new sense of the importance and caring and Compassion…that a priest’s words should have at such times of devastating loss.

Thank you for the kind words. That priest has passed. I will consider passing this on to the current priest. My father was heavily involved with that church’s building as services were initially held in the movie theater in our small town. I was in the first communion group in that theater. So many memories have rushed into my life with what our current administration is doing to our country. Never imagined how much I had been carrying around. I am sure many people are experiencing the same things . And maybe a large portion are women like me.

I was raised Roman Catholic as well but left in my early twenties when I attempted to get sponsorship papers to stand with my niece during confirmation because of the way I was dressed. From that moment on, I decided that the judgment and recrimination by a mere mortal was unacceptable. This "man" did not know me. Did not know who I was or what I stood for. This Pope just may bring me a little closer to my Catholic upbringing but time will tell how well received his philosophies are and acted upon by the monsignors, priests, and deacons in the churches.

Pressure Congressional Republicans.

AI

Areas of Dissent and Opposition:

Trump's Agenda and Policies:

Budget and Spending: Some hard-line Republicans have expressed dissent regarding Trump's "big beautiful bill," arguing it doesn't go far enough in cutting spending, particularly in areas like Medicaid. For example, Rep. Andy Harris chairs the House Freedom Caucus and supports deeper cuts to Medicaid spending. There's also disagreement over elements like the Salt deduction cap.

Deportation Push: Some GOP lawmakers are warning against the aggressive push for deportations, particularly concerning workers and long-term residents. According to Axios, Republicans are concerned about deportations that go too far.

Tariffs and Trade: Republican dissent has also been voiced against Trump's use of tariffs, with concerns about their potential negative economic impacts. Newsweek lists several Republicans who have expressed concern about Trump's tariffs.

Trump's Actions and Approach:

"Crackdown on Dissent": Some have criticized what they perceive as a crackdown on dissent by the Trump administration. The Atlantic reports on actions like charging Rep. LaMonica McIver, suggesting they test the boundaries of acceptable responses to dissent.

Use of Executive Authority: There are concerns regarding Trump's potential abuse of executive authority, including in areas like surveillance and freedom of the press. The ACLU warns about the potential for Trump to use expanded surveillance powers against political opponents.

Challenges to Democratic Norms: Some Republicans have voiced concerns about Trump's disregard for democratic norms and his attempts to pressure lawmakers.

Examples of Dissenting Voices:

Rep. Thomas Massie: A long-time critic of Trump on issues like spending and surveillance, Massie has survived primary challenges despite his dissent. NBC News details Massie's history of opposing Trump on key votes.

Rep. Mike Lawler: Expressed opposition to the "big beautiful bill" in its current form.

Rep. Chip Roy: A key holdout on the budget, questioning whether promises regarding the Senate plan would materialize.

Rep. Mark Amodei: Opposes the administration's plans to claw back funding for public media.

Sen. Rand Paul: A vocal critic of Trump's spending policies, including the military parade, and has opposed the tax and domestic policy bill due to debt concerns. Newsweek highlights Paul's concerns about Trump's tariffs.

....

I hve been hoping that Reps Don Bacon, Mike Turner and others would come forward re Ukraine. https://www.nytimes.com/2025/06/08/us/politics/breaking-with-trump-bacon-says-he-wont-follow-his-party-off-the-cliff.html

26 Republican senators and more House members voted to fund Ukraine. The Sanctioning Russia Act of 2025 (S. 1241/H.R. 2548) is a proposed piece of legislation in the US Senate and House of Representatives aimed at increasing sanctions against Russia in response to its ongoing invasion of Ukraine. The Senate version, introduced by Senators Graham and Blumenthal, has gained significant bipartisan support. The bill proposes a comprehensive sanctions and tariff regime targeting Russia and those who support its energy sector. 80 cosponsors.

Thanks for good math about the protest totals; too many people are citing smaller figures with no mathematical basis. Alt National Park reported 12.1 million people [edit: 13.14 million is their final figure]. That may be a high figure, but I've read about two dozen people who were at Hands Off in April and No Kings assert that the attendance on the latter was a lot more, anywhere from +50% to +500%, with the average being x2 to x3. Moreover, No Kings had 2100 sites vs. 1300 with Hands Off. Since Hands Off is cited as 3-5 million, we're looking at 6-8 million at the low end and 9-12 million at the high end. Given the more than 50% increase in sites, my view is 9-10 million looks about right for No Kings. That is in synch with your 10 million citation. We agree: it was HUGE.
