Quote from this post-

“Congressional Republicans have shown little interest in compromise, even as families brace for higher health care costs and economic disaster.”

I’ll go out on a limb and say that congressional republicans show very little interest in legislating - or doing much of anything at all - except ignoring their constituents, shutting down the government, and doing whatever their master tells them to do!

And collect their taxpayer salaries of course.

“Congress kicked off 2025 with an ambitious agenda, but 12 months later, it has ceded much of its power to President Trump and passed a record low number of bills.”

Merry, once again I think your thoughtful supposition is spot on.

Being in Congress can be a good gig (financially and otherwise):

World-wide travel (they to see be up to speed)

For most, a $174,000/year (leaders earn more)

72% health insurance premium cost subsidy

A pension worth up to 80% of their salary

Those with insider knowledge do not always ignore it when investing

Yes, politicians now seem to consider their positions as a career livelihood. Yet term limits have been a popular concept for decades. And they have been imposed periodically. But it’s apparently easier said than done.

The constitution did not mention term limits. Washington set his own limit to 2 terms. Eventually presidential limits were added by Amendment Twenty-two to the Constitution was ratified on February 27, 1951. It establishes term limits on those elected president, and outlines an accompanying series of stipulations regarding the eligibility of succession for unfinished presidential terms.

The conundrum is that Congress itself has to pass legislation! So…

(And I wouldn’t be surprised if trump tries to run for a 3rd term. The good news is that he’s really OLD!)

If the GOP were to control the House after the Midterms (not likely), he probably would run even though constitutionally ineligible in order to create chaos sufficient to trigger an outcome-determinative decision by the House under the 12th Amendment. If the Dems control the House (far more likely unless the Midterms do not occur or are stolen; each a real possibility), that approach could backfire. Chances of fair elections in 2026 and 2028, recognized as such by the Dems + GOP (and 50%+ of voters), seem aspirational at best. 12th Amendment: https://www.law.cornell.edu/constitution/amendmentxii

Expand full comment
Merry's avatar

Agree.

And I also believe there’s a distinct possibility that if Trump is concerned about losing the house, he will create significant chaos before the midterms, declare a national state of emergency, initiate martial law, close down the government and suspend elections until further notice.

Of course all of that would be illegal, but when has he ever let a few laws or the constitution get in the way of his agenda?

Starting at about 6:33 and ending at about 7:57. The language below was taken from the transcript accompanying the video, as reported there.

Now understand that in 19 when the Soviet Union fell in the early 1990s, Ukraine was left with the world's third largest stockpile of tactical nuclear weapons and and strategic nuclear weapons on the planet. But they signed this agreement with the United States, the United Kingdom, and the So, and Russia that basically said, "If you give up your nuclear weapons, we these three countries that signed to this will provide for your defense and assure you of your defense." And so Ukraine did that. They gave up these weapons. Well, now this was signed in 1994. 20 years later, one of the three countries that signed that agreement hasn't just not provided for their defense, they actually invaded them. And I want to make a point on this for a second. Think about if you're one of these other countries around the world right now that feels threatened by your neighbors. And the United States and the rest of the world are going to you and saying, "Listen, don't develop nuclear weapons. Don't develop nuclear weapons South Korea. Don't develop nuclear weapons Japan. Don't develop nuclear weapons Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia, we will protect you. We will watch out for you. What kind of lesson do you think this instance sends to them? I think the message this is sending to many nations around the world is perhaps we can no longer count on the security promises made by the free world. Perhaps we need to start looking out for ourselves.

Following your fine point to fn.1 in that article takes us to John Adams:

"In the midst of these pleasing ideas we should be unfaithful to ourselves if we should ever lose sight of the danger to our liberties if anything partial or extraneous should infect the purity of our free, fair, virtuous, and independent elections. If an election is to be determined by a majority of a single vote, and that can be procured by a party through artifice or corruption, the Government may be the choice of a party for its own ends, not of the nation for the national good. If that solitary suffrage can be obtained by foreign nations by flattery or menaces, by fraud or violence, by terror, intrigue, or venality, the Government may not be the choice of the American people, but of foreign nations. It may be foreign nations who govern us, and not we, the people, who govern ourselves; and candid men will acknowledge that in such cases choice would have little advantage to boast of over lot or chance."

What too many Republicans want to do is be on social media 24/7, then to be on Fox et al, and fundraise off of it all. They are not interested in governing at all, and any bi-partisanship would be a self betrayal of their brand. In short, no interest in governing. Every candidate should be challenged about this: Do you fundraise using social media?

REPUBLICANS have full control of Congress. So Democrats are very limited in what they can do without republican support. That’s why the midterm elections are so important.

And for the record that’s how the Epstein Files Transparency Act was actually passed. Because a few republicans voted with the Democrats.

But trump’s administration simply ignored the deadline to release the files by 12/19/25, with no consequences. Just excuses. Because Trump’s corrupt and lawless regime controls the DOJ.
