I blame Stephen Miller's parent for this. He belongs in an institution. He is mentally ill. You can't tell me that his parents did not see that something was wrong with him growing up. He is a very disturbed individual.

Miller has always been instrumental in fueling the FALSE fear of immigrants; legal or not. His family has basically disowned him. It was Miller’s cockamamie idea, knowing it would never happen, to ‘build a wall and have Mexico pay for it.’ He put that in Trump’s ear in 2015-16 knowing Trump’s MAGAts would eat it up. Miller is a xenophobic to the 1,000th degree. His wife is of ‘the same cloth’. Read Vanity Fair’s articles (available online): Keeping Up With The Millers: How Stephen Miller And His Wife, Katie, Met In A Hateful Place (8/13/20); and How Stephen Miller Rode WHITE Rage from Duke University to Trump’s White House (Summer, 2017). Both are disturbing and scary shit. 🤨

Expand full comment
ErisX's avatar

I blame mostly low-info voters. That's what I've seen. There are protest voters, but mostly it's those who thought Trump would create change and that any change would be better than whatever they had. People don't do evil things in the name of evil; they do the wrong thing for the right reasons.

Expand full comment
ITSNOTSAFE's avatar

I agree with the reference to “low info voters” versus what is sometimes referred to as “uneducated” or other monikers. And most of the blame for their being “low info” is the strategic manipulation of the oligarch press and misinformation campaign that a great deal of us could not see thru as being just that a deliberate manipulation which in turn divided a nation that just a short while ago could have a discussion about differences of opinion without declaring “war” on each other. It was such a huge and effective manipulation; then there is Donald Trump a puppet the visual representation and a person of no substance; a failed businessman; a convicted felon; a man who does not pay his bills and misrepresents the value of his property to con major NY banks out of loans that cannot be paid back; a thief; and a vindictive and cruel master class con man who took it from there launched by the concerted manipulation of our press putting each of us at odds with each other to lead and charm as a only a con man can. He has abandoned them now. He is hurting them now. But that is a classic con. Take all that you have and never think of you again. Gone! Off to live the dream of his family to be as rich and powerful as an Arabian King. The Trump Family is a Crime Family. A con man deflects onto others whom they are themselves to hide their own vile intent. America has been conned. Oligarchs and MAJOR CORPORATIONS have supported him. But they have no idea whom we are in fact; they will be proven to be beatable. IF WE UNITE AND ONLY IF WE UNITE AND POUR INTO THE STREETS IN THE GREATEST NUMBER POSSIBLE WHICH MEANS ALL OF US WE WILL PREVAIL. It is up to us!

Expand full comment
ITSNOTSAFE's avatar

agreed -- but it becomes evil when it is done to hurt just to hurt for power or greed -- Trump is a master class con man. Period. And he has surrounded himself with people who will never challenge him. I think that will be his downfall and he did so because he cannot tolerate being challenged.

Expand full comment
Sharon Hays's avatar

As a mentally ill person, I rather think that using that idea to explain greedy and hateful behavior and pure evil as disingenuous. For the most part, mental illness is not exhibited by malevolence towards others. That's the behavior of mentally well people. I would appreciate it if our society would stop vilifying mental illness and understand that it is a physical illness like heart disease or diabetes and we didn't ask to be ill. It shouldn't be used as a convenient label to slap on bad behavoir.

Habeas corpus is the thread that stitches liberty into law. Labeling vulnerable families at the border an “invasion” to cut that thread feels less like border security and more like unraveling the very fabric that protects every one of us—right, left, citizen, newcomer alike. History shows that every past suspension, from Lincoln’s Civil War order to the World-War-II internments, became a cautionary tale we later vowed not to repeat. Let’s keep the gate of justice open even as we secure the gate of the nation—pursuing solutions that defend both safety and due-process dignity.

The MAGA morons cheering on the denial of due process to the deportees, are inviting their own downfall. Denying justice to one person, is denying it to every person. Suspending due process in even one case creates a slippery slope to denying it in any case. The only thing that separates the United States from becoming a nation like the one that existed in Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy is due process. North Korea and Russia are examples of nations where due process is denied to their citizens. The MAGA cult members are cheering on the denial of due process to the immigrants being deported. They have no clue about how easy it can be for them someday hear that knock on the door and being taken away, never to be seen again.

It is sad to watch history repeat itself; and even sadder to know it was in our hands to prevent this and today is in our hands to push back against it; but so many are still watching for their savior to crest the distant hill on a white horse like a Netflix film with a happy ending.
