Even if he doesn't run, he is never going to go along with a peaceful transfer of power. As a former Marine EOD Tech, I can assure folks the risk and complexity of landing, supporting and protecting my fellow Marines is unprecedented in this Iran scenario. The geography and geopolitics are also unpredictable and unprecedented. Worse than Iraq and Afghanistan. Boots on the ground would be an astoundingly stupid idea with no strategy or even nascent diplomacy.
Quite possible. Using Kharg Island as an example, Marines would have to secure a confined area, subject to attack from multiple directions. We take it, Iran loses it oil refinery and production. Or, we destroy it to further cripple Iran. Either way, Iran loses its capability for the foreseeable future. Would it not be their best strategic option to destroy Kharg Island, and at the same time inflict US casualties? I really do not see our military commanders agreeing to boots on the ground, even if it means their dismissal.
