Canada, which has been suffering from a severe physician shortage since COVID, has been aggressively recruiting US doctors who are sick of moral injury and inadequate state reimbursements. (British Columbia alone has taken in over 1200 US medical providers since the beginning of the year.)

And now they get to take their pick of international doctors who are excluded from the US by this new $100K requirement. They'll just come up here instead.

Thanks, America! We love our new docs!

Canada has also been recruiting Registered Nurses living in WA, Oregon & CA to apply for work permit, Canada RN licensure, proper paperwork to reside there & come work in BC, Canada.

I know Canada has had a shortage of physicians especially specialists. I guess now instead of Canadians coming to the US for medical care, we can come to Canada for medical care. By the way I was born and raised in Canada. I met and married the most wonderful America veteran who passed in July 2024. I am choosing to stay and fight for our democracy.

Thank you so much for your loving words and willingness to stay with us and fight. It would be easier to head back to Canada! God bless you!

Boy I need to read this every day...I am a naturalized Canadian (my mother was from there) and I think about moving there every day. Because that's the only place I have relatives (father was an only child of an only child) and we went there every summer I feel more connected to Canada than I do to the US in many ways....for me it represents family and good times, and the US does not and now Canada represents a political environment I'd like to live in. But I have children and grand children here, so I too stay and fight for democracy. But I sure need encouragement from time to time!!

To those Canadians who are choosing to stay in the USA and fight Trump's evil administration, the more power to you. America needs all the help it can get in stopping the fascist cancer currently eating at it. Do, remember, however, that if life becomes too dangerous there, you can continue the fight from here.

Actually, Sylvia, Americans have been going to Canada for health care for a number of years. I worked in Pittsburgh in the 1990s and at that time groups of seniors would charter busses and go to Canada where they would see a doctor and get prescriptions filled. Because they did not qualify for Canadian medicare and cheaper prescriptions, they had to pay the full cost of those services in addition to the cost of the trip. Every one of them that I talked to said that it was cheaper to do that than see an American doctor and by medication in the USA.

I can hardly breathe - again! Every time I take even a tiny dive into Trump’s policies and their consequences, I spiral into hopelessness and depression. How in God’s own name are we ever going to survive this?!?!

If not for our magnificent cadre of independent reporters, I would have no hope at all. God bless Meidas, Aaron Parnas, and the other stalwarts. And God bless every rebel upholding freedom in these dark dark days.

We keep hearing about the current government’s assault on medicine - particularly rural hospitals. This insightful reporting definitely pulled the pieces together.

It also showed that the other hospitals willow be affected and the cities will have fewer primary care doctors as well

And what about student nurses? Trump's entire family should be forced to work for the rest of their miserable lives emptying bedpans...

Don't denigrate the job of emptying bedpans. As a 40+ year nurse, I will be the first to tell you that what is in them tells you volumes about what's going on medically with a patient. I want to say, shame on you for your limited understanding of what nursing is, but, it doesn't surprise me.

That is so true as a retired RN there are many things that can be assessed by the bedpan.

I'm old school. I used to lecture nursing students who didn't want to do this duty that they were being negligent by not using it as an assessment tool. I was so into it! As corporatized as health care has become, I doubt I would do nursing now. Probably become an auto mechanic--lots of systems, just like the human body--and satisfaction when the problem is solved.

When the words- "money" and "medicine" are used in the same sentence---- obscenity! A Doctor who considers their wealth before their patients health-- bad actor

You should focus on the money at the top, the hospital executives, not the doctors themselves. Unless you have exceptional family wealth, you borrow a lot of money to train to be a doctor. You shoulder all of the cost. You have to choose a job that allows you to pay off your extraordinary debt.

Look up how much your hospital executive makes. Or the CEO of your pharmacy or health carrier.

Please don’t pick on the doctors. You will see less and less of us as the republicans continue to gut the financial resources needed to get through medical training, on top of the H1B issues now.

Thank you Dr. Gupta and Dr. Mark, for you dedication to making our lives better and healthier. I think the goal for this policy is to make Americans less healthy. If we are sick, broke, and without medicine, we are easier to manipulate!

Elections and Cheeto’s Interference

Mikie Sherrill the Democratic Congresswoman and gubernatorial candidate for New Jersey is now being attacked by Cheeto’s Nazi regime by releasing her military files to the public including private information of her parent’s address, Social Security number, and other discretionary material that should never be in the public sphere

Let’s be clear If Cheeto and his Nazi allies can go after a political opponent at a governor’s level then they will go after any American citizen who is a registered voter This is the reason that DOJ is after registered voter rolls in 9 Democratic states The vigilante challenge that came out of a Georgia experiment as reported by Greg Palast disenfranchised Georgia registered voters

Keep this in mind for future elections because the Nazis are coming after your legitimate voting status

A sobering exposé on the fragility of American healthcare and the indispensable role of international medical graduates. The proposed H-1B visa fee hike isn’t merely bureaucratic, it’s existential, threatening to sever the lifeline of care in underserved communities. Dr. Mark and Dr. Gupta offer not just critique, but clarity, reminding us that policy has a pulse, and patients are the ones who feel it.

Thank you Dr Gupta & Dr Mark for explaining the intricacies foreign resident physicians face. The new fees for the visas needed to get a position at a US hospital vs the resident’s pay is not worth the expense to the hospital systems. As most of the large hospital systems are privately owned by hedge funds, & as these systems grow, the smaller individual hospitals are unable to afford to operate due to costs. The dilemma is to either close or be bought up into one of the large private system, thus the hedge fund owners are only looking at the bottom line-profit for their shareholders!

Please continue your articles to enlighten those not in the medical profession to understand how medicine is needed and functions.
