I’m in Washington state and I just wrote to Patty. Not only do we have to fear insurance becoming unobtainable, there’s something else most don’t know about. My husband was laid off earlier this year. We don’t have insurance because I can’t commit to the marketplace until this ACA tax credit is approved. DID YOU KNOW THAT DOCTORS AND SPECIALISTS WILL REFUSE TO SEE YOU IF YOU AREN’T INSURED??
It’s true! Although I am able to cash pay before the appointment, they say they don’t take uninsured people. I’m recovering from brain cancer. I had a major craniotomy and there’s a good chance the cancer will come back. I need regular MRI’s. I need regular visits with specialists. I have permanent neurological damage now. I’m on life saving medications that doctors refuse to fill without an appointment, and yet they won’t make me an appointment! My pain clinic is discharging me after 9 years because of no insurance. It’s a nightmare. I’m told repeatedly to go to the ER if there’s an emergency and they’ll see you but other than that good luck.
Beck, so sorry to hear of your health condition. Things must change for you and everyone. If you're in need of medications, go to the ER and ask them to fill a prescription(s) for you. Just bring whatever you can for proof of regular meds. I don't know if all do, but where I live, hospitals will do that and have their own pharmacy. Especially in light of what's going on, I would think they would refill them for you. Of course, the medications cost are ridiculous as well and will only increase. Worse comes to worse, for the pain, smoke some pot. Thank God they don't turn away anyone even if you owe them money. Wishing, hoping and praying for the best for you!
Beck, I am an RN and can’t get my head around the fact that physicians offices are refusing to see patients that don’t have insurance! Have you tried contacting the WA Medical Association to complain and to locate providers who will accept a visit cash payment? Each state has a medical board that issues licenses to each physician so that they can practice in the state. I definitely would call to file a complaint regarding your situation.
But going to the ER each time you need to a Rx for an MRI or medications is also costly when you are paying costs out of pocket! Hope this helps, good luck!
Thank you for your kind response. I was floored to be told I can’t be seen. My pain management has been on Butrans patches and oxycodone, along with a high dose of gabapentin. My doctor there last week asked if I wanted a taper plan so I can be off them since I won’t be seen again. Good luck finding any doctor who will take me as a patient, because they are terrified of the states monitoring system for narcotics, and won’t do all the paperwork involved. I’ve been with the same PCP for a decade and he won’t take me on for pain management in the interim.
What really sucks is I’ve worked steady jobs since 1992 up until 2019. I owned my own business starting in 2011. I had to have an Achilles transplant and other leg surgery in 2019, and I couldn’t work because it took me a year to walk again. No income. Then March of 2020 I was just reopening and- pandemic. Because I didn’t work the year prior, I couldn’t get unemployment or a PPP loan. During this time my body has fallen apart. I have multiple disc herniations and bulges, severe spinal stenosis, osteoarthritis, and scoliosis so severe I’m inoperable. I’ve been through every procedure possible. My sciatic nerves are pinched tight on both sides and I can’t walk. It’s all inherited. I was born with MCAD and go into anaphylactic shock if I do any exercise or high activities. It causes many other issues too. Currently that means trying to unload groceries is an impossible task. I’ve had POTS for 20 years and now I have to be reclined or laying down or I vomit and pass out. Fortunately I’ve got an appointment with the orthostatic neurologist in Mill Creek coming up. He’s only cash pay. $2400 for the first visit and $595 every follow up! Then I got brain cancer! Then I was diagnosed with fibro by a rheumatologist. It unreal going from a strong healthy woman to a blob in an adjustable bed.
My reason for saying this is because I apparently don’t qualify for Social Security disability. I don’t have enough “work credits” now for SSDI and my husband made too much money for basic disability. I feel defeated seeing so many people on disability who openly admit to faking an invisible illness and get it, when I paid my taxes my whole life and now my life value is based off of my spouse and not myself.
Sorry to hear about all of your medical problems and that the options open to you seem limited. I do empathize with your situation as my family went through a tragic situation involving my husband 32 years ago, he has passed on 14 years ago but it still has left a financial strain on us. Keep looking into any options that you may find, and call your representatives to ask them for assistance in getting the care you need.

Healthcare and affordable insurance are two very important things every American should have available to them. Why the GOP wants to take this away is beyond believable. There is nothing wrong with the ACA. It allows families to have coverage and get the healthcare that’s needed. If the Government was truly interested in helping the people, they would move to Universal Insurance for everyone paid for though taxes.
