Leading healthcare policy expert, Jessica Schubel, debunks Trump’s plan to replace real insurance with empty promises in this new episode of Meidas Health
The US could save between $450 billion and over $1 trillion annually under a universal healthcare system, according to various studies. These potential savings are based on factors like reduced administrative costs, lower negotiated prices for services and drugs, and the elimination of out-of-pocket healthcare costs for individuals. While specific figures vary depending on the study's assumptions, a consensus suggests that universal healthcare could be less expensive than the current system.
Key factors contributing to potential savings
Reduced administrative costs: A single-payer system could drastically lower administrative overhead by simplifying billing and eliminating the need for a multitude of private insurance plans.
Lower negotiated prices: A large, single-payer system would have greater bargaining power to negotiate lower prices for healthcare services and prescription drugs.
Elimination of out-of-pocket costs: By eliminating deductibles, co-pays, and other out-of-pocket costs, individuals would save a significant amount of money.
Preventive care: Universal healthcare could lead to more preventive care, which can be more cost-effective than treating advanced diseases later on.
What the studies show
Some studies estimate potential annual savings of over $450 billion.
Other studies, like one from the Congressional Budget Office, estimate savings of $650 billion annually.
A 10-year projection by the University of Massachusetts Amherst estimates savings of over $5 trillion.
The Mercatus Center, a more right-leaning think tank, estimated over $2 trillion in savings over a decade.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, a single-payer system could have saved the US an estimated $105 billion in hospitalization costs alone.
I agree that a single payer system could significantly lower administrative costs. However, eliminating all deductibles, co-pays and other OOP costs would lead to a marked increase in demand and overuse of physician services (much of it from a small percentage of sick or hypochondriacal patients). In Canada and the UK, most patients accept that their PCP will need to see 35-60 patients per day due to increased demand, and will therefore be unable to spend much time with each patient. Americans who have reasonably good insurance would be very dissatisfied with that system. Upper class patients who are social media savvy would be complaining like crazy, and Republicans would regain Congress and the White House in the next election (just like after Obamacare was passed). The British National Health Service works, in part, because it denies certain types of low-value care as determined by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), patients require a referral from their PCP to see an NHS specialist, and elective surgery has a several month wait time. The British and Canadian systems cost much less per capita, but upper class Americans expect unlimited coverage for treatment of their illnesses, and their concierge doctors and their lawyers can help them get it.
I am a Canadian living in Canada and I do not agree--My PCP spends enough time with me. I could afford to pay more for care. Your system renders families bankrupt.
I did not intend to criticize Canadian doctors or the Canadian system overall - it is very cost-effective and covers every citizen. On average, Canadian PCP's see more patients per day than American PCPs (based on my experience as a retired American PCP, talking to a former Canadian PCP, and a Google search). Certainly, a very competent and efficient PCP can see 30-40 patients per day and still spend sufficient time with most patients to do a good job. (I'm glad your PCP is able to do so.) However, he may need to have a patient with a complicated problem come back in a day or two to complete the evaluation. It is true that the American system can, and does, cause medical bankruptcies. The Affordable Care Act did help to reduce the problem, but not eliminate it. The Big (Ugly) Bill passed by the Republicans earlier this year will make the problem worse.
I agree with you in principle, but Americans seem to have a very hard time in agreeing about what is fair - witness our current political debates, and our recent election, in which 49.8% of American votes for president went to a convicted felon.
Universal Health care and private insurance for those who still want it. Like that it will be a fair playing field. And the insurances will be forced to lower their costs.
We already have a shortage of PCPs in the US, with many on the verge of retirement, and many are choosing to become concierge doctors. I assume those doctors would refuse to participate in the single-payer national health system you envision. Would doctors be allowed to decline the single-payer NHS, just like doctors can refuse to participate in Medicare now? If so, I'm afraid we would end up with an immediate shortage of PCPs, with primary care in the NHS being mainly provided by physician assistants and nurse-practitioners. Many if not most specialists might also choose to only accept private insurance, unless the NHS allowed them to continue to make >$300,000/year, as they do now. Doctors and hospitals already complain bitterly that the insurance companies aren't paying them enough - the insurance companies aren't the main cause of high medical costs in the US. The insurance companies will likely only be able to lower their costs if they are allowed to exclude the sickest patients, or can force doctors and hospitals to accept lower payments.
Doctors demand control of the US healthcare system. In the 1990s, East coast docs brought in business to capture the monies and take Nursing investments in healthcare delivery empowering patients ( birth centers, VBAC, hospice care), and treating underserved populations ( HIV, the poor, school based health clinics, VD clinics). Doctors wanted to do money making 'cancer care, joint replacements '.Then, 25 years later, business flipped on you Docs and siphoned off power and money for themselves, competing with MDs. Now, Wall Street, not stopped by their bought and paid for politicians deconstruct our public tax investments in facilities, etc.. just like the rest of the top US clowns with the " untreatable insatiable greed disease", you too will have to curb your appetites! Insatiable Homo Destructus evolved post the death of Homo Sapiens in the 1970s after we were ALL warned by the environmental, feminist, peace movements. You too are killing the Planet, where you live as well. Might want to make your own bunker. We can shut you in it with a little nuclear material dropped in for the nuclear waste you insatiable greed folks want to spread all over the US. Healthcare is far more than doctors and we had glimpses of this in the 1980-1990s. The British system, which has also been financially starved, was built by public health, not insatiable greed. You have destroyed 'us'.
Thank you for this. This is exactly the question I had after reading the summary of Dr. Gupta's conversations. It seems like Medicare For All is the way to go. And per Mr. Steenbergen's comments below, I don't know what doctor he goes to, but my experience has been of the typical 15-minute visit in the US, the conveyer-belt model.
Yes and when the riots start at your local urgent care center because there's not enough providers to care for sick patients lined-up around the block, rest assured that Felon47 will send-in masked troops to restore order...and, of course, provide Trump Body Bags.
So I thought prescriptions were supposed to be 1500% cheaper. My 2025 copay was $10 2026 will be $127. So dumpty didn't mean cheaper he meant more expensive.
I just wish the lies would stop. Trump said 200,000 to 300,000 people die of Fentanyl overdose when the death rate was 48,000 in 2024 with a drop of 27% in 2024 from the year before. Yes, that is a lot of people that died of overdose but how about treating the problem. There are people that live in pain that Tylenol and Ibuprofen doesn't handle. When pain medication returns quality of life. Doctor's cut off people's medication and some turn to the streets for relief and some overdose. Doctor's are under fire and threatened to have their licenses taken when it should be between a doctor and their patient. There will be some doctor's that will abuse the system but there are far more that care about their patients well being. The overdose problem should be treated humanely not jailing people. People with mental illness and addiction should not have the only solution be incarceration. We need qualified professionals that know how to deal with people who suffer from dual diagnosis as they are few and far between. They are qualified to monitor a patient's medication regimen. How about using the money they are using to keep the military blowing up boats in Venezuela and funneling money for a new plane for the president or paying the head of the FBI to buy BMWS and jet to sporting events.
Not just this administration but RepubliCONS in Congress!! They haven't came up with a better healthcare plan in forever!! They haven't even tried, all they've done is lie!! It's sad they were elected to take care of their Constitutes, yet they don't give a sh*t from the top down they've done nothing but give and make the wealthiest among us richer and the rest of us poorer and sicker!!
You are absolutely right about that!! I'll 2nd your "How did this guy ever get elected?" I just figured it's FL RepubliCONS so maybe by cheating, lying and thieving just like Felon47 ??
Thank goodness somebody told the truth about high deductible health plans. The only people who can save enough money to pay for healthcare costs are doctors and other highly compensated workers. I know. I work in benefits for a hospital chain in Arizona. Republicans probably cooked up this whole scenario for themselves years ago.
No, not Doctors. Politicians, Healthcare upper echelon, especially CEO level, wealthy corporate leaders. The healthcare crippled doctors with "managed care" which means a clerk denies necessary care. The days when our doctors had the right to give you the care you needed began to erode 30 years ago.
Yes, Doctors do have the insatiable greed disease, like judges, lawyers, bankers, etc.. We see it in Nursing clearly but it is a TABOO subject. The AMA, doctors political arm has ALWAYS CONTROLLED US healthcare and kept Medicare For All out. Get in your bunkers, AMA and we can seal you up too!
Compare the per capita cost of healthcare in the United States to most of Europe. Then factor in healthcare outcomes and life expectancies of both systems. America ends up at the bottom each and every comparison! Healthcare in America sucks! It is too expensive and cumbersome, and frankly comparatively ineffective.
I agree! Australia has Medicare for ALL, even temporary residents that are going through the permanent residency process. I don't think anything has changed? It was 20 years ago when I was living in Australia with my (then) Aussie husband.
Explanation of what is happening and how it will effect so so many of our fellow Americans. I just don’t understand why this country, richest in the world can’t manage to do this! It makes me grief stricken for the many that will die as a result! My husband died this last year, under the care of the best doctors, nurses, in one of the best hospitals in Texas. If the best care here couldn’t save him, I just can’t imagine the heartache and grief that are on a collision course with America at this very moment!
Well we do have 5Billion dollar antiquated military ships to build. Priorities, people!
And with trump's name on everything he'll get money for its registered trademark! Just more grift from this corrupt administration. Why isn't anyone in the press mentioning this possible angle.
According to google "Donald Trump earns significant royalties and licensing fees by trademarking his name for various products and properties, from hotels and golf courses (like Trump Tower, Trump Steaks, Trump Vodka) to furniture, generating millions in revenue through deals that pay his brand for using the "Trump" name, though specifics vary and are sometimes complex due to business structures. He personally owns many key trademarks, allowing him to profit from their use by others."
Is there a financial benefit for the trump criminal enterprise to having his name on the Kennedy Center, a fleet of ships and whatever else he attaches his vile name to? Most likely and also most likely illegal but since we no longer seem to have any laws that apply to him it's all good and the money just keeps rolling in. Of course the cult doesn't realize that their very own pockets are being picked clean by the dear leader. Their ignorance is going to destroy us.
Since he was elected the first time they he still only had a concept with Republicans scratching their heads for 10 yrs and more.thats why trump hates Obama cause hes had a brainless cabinet twice in which they all failed .its more than time to get rid of this corrupt cabinet and trump.there is no time to wait and see if dems can win elections cause hes also trying not to have them.
The Republicans as usual care nothing for regular working people , just as their leader Trump cares nothing for working people. The AffordableCare act is exactly what it says it is . But the truth is all of the reduction in safety factors in the environment and health care are under the same plan by the Trump Administration.
It’s the “ I don’t give a f..k about what happens to working Americans plan”.
Trump is happy to see ordinary Americans die off from lack of health care , and his Republican sycophants carry this out . There should be no one Republican that supported this nonsense elected to office again . I hope they remember why . Of course Trump is trying desperately to to break the law and change voting rules to negate the wishes of Democrats , because they represent the people, not just the wealthy.
thanks Folks: yes with RFKJr. running the show , its imperative to have health care. Has polio vaccines been stopped?? The Republicans do not have any sort of health care plan. The only reason Trump wants to end the ACA is because Obama got it into the hopper..
I thought I had a good health insurance that met my needs but what came next was when I went for my appointment and had the balance and leave my insurance to pay the balance of $5 thousand but turned out they didn't want to pay for removal of teeth so I can have my upper and bottom denture who was ready for me but got ad news the insurance said they don't pay for removal let alone the denture after I paid $1,500 was going to pay another $1,131 and my dental inform me and I appeal to my insurance and they still denied and on top they didn't inform me of changes and now I had to called my dental ASPEN to cancel and refund my money I paid so I am waiting for my refund. What is worse is my Northern Lights has decided to cancel my insurance the Humana and the doctors are not allowed to accept it anymore leave us to pay for their service which my Humana advance Medicare insurance ends this month and I will only have Medicare that doesn't have dental and only pay so much and what ever is needed will have to copay. What this Felon and Republicans are doing to us is shameful. The truth is we have to be prepared for what comes and the worst is many people's lives are at stake and I pray God help us all 🙏
The entire world is billions past comfortable "carrying capacity" of human beings. It would be impossible for the entire world to have US standard of living. This has been true for decades. All the insatiable greed, Davos, Redwood meeting people know this. Their idea is to kill as many of us off as they can. Then, more for Richy Rich! We knew this was coming in the 1970s, via Ecology, Limits to Growth, Silent Spring! But, Richy Rich and the Corporations model is growth unsustainable!
Obviously Cheeto is a figurehead, albeit not a very good one, for a larger Nazi Republican movement which seeks to destroy the republic WE the People should not forget that every Nazi that stands behind this regime/movement is at fault This includes not only the sycophants that are making things happen in the Black House but also all the loyalists
It embodies the entire Nazi Republican Congress and the SCOTUS The group is comprised of all the right wing media such as Fox or NewsNation It includes right wing organizations It includes all the wealthy greedy scumbags supporting an opportunity to make more $$ rather than hold the Nazis in power to account
After Cheeto and his Nazi regime has been deposed, like Judas, all will plead with the electorate that they weren’t responsible It was the other guy’s fault That they didn’t want what happened to have happened
These people should not be left off the hook All of the groups above tried to destroy the government and WE the People’s democracy And that includes the Democrats who do not want to screw the Nazi Republicans….WE the People should not and will not forget what a travesty WE experienced There needs to be accountability and doesn’t necessarily mean in a judicial sense It means to not vote or listen to these scumbags, including the wealthy disenfranchised for at least 10 years That’s what happened to Nazi Germany
these plans are high deductible with high premiums. So look at a $600 a month premium (single adult NY) with a deductible. For me that is one pay period every month that goes strictly to my premium.. and if I need health care, some other portion of my income towards the deductible. there will be times when my pay period does not pay the premium.. I can be short as much as $250.
Currently 2 pay periods of my income go towards my living expenses with basic necessities and really cheap food (all home cooked all analyzed to the penny).. and of course my electric and gas.. which have various fees attached to each level of use and then taxes.Food goes in another pay period. based on this model I can only afford one pay period for anything to do with my health.. (Note I have no car I don't use public transportation I don't eat out ,his doesn't include anything to do with any debt I have; (Currently I have student loans and credit card debt). This model leaves me one week of each pay period on average there are a few with 5 weeks instead of four each year. I live frugally, I experienced enough growing up with a grandparent who was raised in the depression.. and another adult who did not understand how to budget or count money properly.. I'm not having hard time yet, but the worst is yet to come. I've managed to pay down $60,000 in debt with interest accruing daily on what is technically minimum wage in New York. if I had been unfortunate enough to stay where I grew up, I would be buried in debt with bad credit and no hope of digging my way out. I can't even imagine how everyone else fares.

medicare?
see if humana in your area then go to dhs a ask for the medicare savings program pays the spenddown
As Humana's Medicare Advantage plans EAT our federal monies with their paws in the cookie jar, upcoding everything to SCAM and RAPE our tax monies.
Medicare Advantage is private insurance. It is NOT Medicare.

Medicare works extremely well for the elderly and why not extend that to include everyone. Enough of insurance companies making huge profits.
Thanks for the update.
That's what Bernie Sanders is advocating.

not elderly - disabled
Medicare covers the elderly and the disabled.
on ssdi i get medicare humana

JD is just waiting to step in and it will be the same playbook.
Auto maintenance is often more than 400$
these plans are high deductible with high premiums.
