SPEAKER 3
Donald Trump is absolutely humiliating himself at the G7 in Alberta, Canada, where he's taken his attacks against democratic cities before the international audience. He's just been ranting and raving like a lunatic at the G7 against democratic cities. Now he's saying,
0:17
He's going to go to New York and he's going to Chicago and he needs to escalate things there. And he looks just so addled as well when he's being asked the question. Like he didn't realize that last night that he posted that he wants to escalate
0:30
things in what he calls democratic power centers because he says that Democrats are turning everybody trans, transgender for everybody. And that's why he wants ICE to escalate their action. I don't even know what this guy's talking about. This is the most dangerous, absurdist, ridiculous authoritarian regime I've seen. But this is what he's saying at the G7.

Meidas Interview with NYC Mayor Candidate Zohran Mamdani

I sat down with Assemblymember and NYC Mayoral Candidate Zohran Mamdani for a raw, urgent conversation about authoritarianism, affordability, and the fight for our democracy.

By Ben Meiselas

Donald Trump just humiliated himself on the world stage. Again. At the G7 in Alberta, he ranted like an unhinged despot about “Democratic cities,” threatened to escalate ICE raids in places like New York and Chicago, and launched into a deranged tirade about how Democrats are somehow “turning everybody transgender.” The prime minister standing next to him literally had to shut the press conference down. It was that embarrassing.

Share

But this is no longer just about embarrassment. It’s about danger. Trump is actively calling for attacks on what he calls “Democratic power centers.” And let me be clear: this isn’t normal political rhetoric. This is how fascists talk when they want to lay the groundwork for violence and persecution.

Which is why I sat down to get to know somebody who appears to actually get the moment we’re in. If you haven’t yet, meet someone who’s not afraid to call this out for what it is and fight back: New York State Assemblymember and NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani.

Zohran doesn’t sugarcoat it. He’s called this what it is: an authoritarian regime. While Trump parades tanks down Constitution Avenue and dreams up mass deportations, Zohran is showing up for everyday New Yorkers, like working families who’ve been crushed by rent, healthcare costs, and political cowardice. He’s not just running against Andrew Cuomo. He’s running against the entire broken political machine Cuomo represents—and the Republican billionaires funding it.

In our interview, we revisited a powerful video Zohran made just after the 2024 election. He went into communities in Queens and the Bronx and talked to everyday voters, many of whom either stayed home or cast a ballot for Trump. Why? Not because they liked him, but because they felt ignored, unheard, abandoned. They were desperate for affordable groceries, stable rent, a government that gives a damn. Trump lied to them, and Democrats didn’t show up.

That’s what Zohran is trying to change. He’s not afraid to speak the truth and to propose bold, specific policies: rent freezes for over 2 million New Yorkers, free and fast buses, universal healthcare. And he’s closing in on Cuomo in the polls, down just two points with days to go before the June 24 primary.

Let me say this plainly: this race matters. Not just for New York, but for the country. Does New York City really want to let Cuomo claw his way back into power with the help of right-wing megadonors like Bill Ackman, who also bankroll Trump’s fascist fantasies? If so, we’re once again sending a message that accountability means nothing. That failed leadership and bad behavior gets rewarded.

Zohran Mamdani is done with the old politics, as are so many Americans. So watch my interview with him, share it, and continue to fight for the values most important to you.

He's definitely going to be in the running in '28, and he's well-spoken & positional razor sharp on-point, so IF we continue to have fair elections (& they're already scrambling to stop that, see the DOJ subpoenas for CO election records, & my own repeated pleadings for incisive journalistic exposure of the workings to prevent the will of the people to be freely exercised), then he's a contender.

Exactly, and I’m glad so many Democrats are coming and joining us on the “far” left, where we don’t think human rights are negotiable, where we don’t throw immigrants under the bus like the Democrats did over the last four years, and where we aren’t beholden to corporate donors. Zohran is that kind of human being and I hope that the Democratic Party can become that kind of party.

It doesn’t matter if he has an R or a D after his name if he’s irreparably broken as a human being just like Trump.

I'm not supporting Cuomos for what he did, but was it rape or sexually assault? Both are horrendous and disgustingly wrong, but It's a big difference. Trump was accused of rape, but the jury was split and didn't charge him with the most serious degree of rape, but rather sexual abuse. I think @tiffany Rae is saying Cuomo isn't trying to end our democracy or constitution and turn this country into a Racist Christian Nationalist country. Whereas Trump is.

Expand full comment
PeopleOverProfit90's avatar

Does it really matter if it was rape or sexual assault? It was the assaults of 13 women and he then tried to destroy their lives. This was only a couple of years ago. It’s not like it’s an ancient history. Trump could not be charged criminally with the rape because of the statute of limitations, not because he didn’t do it. So that means that the jury was only a civil one, meaning he was never going to serve any jail time, even though he was found guilty of sexual abuse, the judge said he raped her. Andrew Cuomo will 100% collaborate with the Trump regime on these deportations and these horrific abuse on human rights. Mark my words, if he wins, he will be just as bad as Adam. Because he is just as corrupt as Adams. He is seriously funded by the same billionaires that fund Trump, why would you think he’s any different. Why would they spend their money on him if he is any different? He’s just a more palatable, narcissistic misogynistic prick.. maybe he’s not a Christian nationalist, but that doesn’t mean he’s not insanely dangerous. Why would you vote for him when you have much better options like Zohran?

Expand full comment
Karen Giorella's avatar

Well said. It's time these behaviors were shameful again. Not to the women they victimized. To the men who think nothing of it. Time for men to realize they can't traumatize their victims over and over. And get away with it. No means no!!! I love that E Jean had the help and support of good people around her. Too many of us end up self destructive or dead. I'll be happy with the world when we never have to say "me too" ever again as a society. For now I'll be happy if perps aren't in the position to make laws for us with sexual assault in their history. That's just bull shit.

Expand full comment
PeopleOverProfit90's avatar

Girl, that was music to my eyes. Seriously, it is so sickening seeing other women so ready to be rape. and SA apologists for powerful men.. without a thought for their victims, who by the way are revictimized every time they have to see their rapist on television. it’s weird AF.. like can we please just stand with other women, especially when they have credible claims and ridiculously powerful RAPISTS..

You are so right, if E. Jean didn’t have the support that she did around her, she probably would’ve never brought the claim. She has basically said as much herself about the strong women around her. We need to stand together like the suffragettes did, not vote for our own oppression. This man just resigned office like yesterday in disgrace, and you have women ready and willing to vote for him again. 🤯 they have to wake up. Being a sexual abuser of any kind has to be disqualifying if we are gonna be any kind of reasonable society.

Expand full comment
Roberta Houle's avatar

NiaSky. I’m not sure about your laws in the US, but in Canada, it’s called sexual assault, and rape falls under that. There is no big difference under the law, which in fact changed the word rape to sexual assault. Rape is no longer used under the law. They have replaced it with sexual assault and of course examine the testimony. Of course there are many acts that also fall under the umbrella of sexual assault. And the law addresses them separately. Just because someone wasn’t raped, doesn’t mean that the assault wasn’t traumatic, physically injurious or life changing.

Response to NiaSky

Actually your words are “Both are horrendous and disgustingly wrong, but it’s a big difference. I'm not supporting Cuomofor what he did, but was it rape or sexually assault?” What? Did I cross into a different dimension?

You say “I have already explained the different level of degrees in my comment.”

Actually you didn’t explain “the different level of degrees” in your comment. You commented that one was worse than the other, and that it’s a big difference. Well, it’s not. Whatever you believe, some kind of deal was made so he was charged ‘only’ with sexual assault. The fact that you’re attempting with your words to justify lessening the initial charges, just because the jury was split, what he put those women through, is kind of disheartening. Just because they changed the charges, that doesn’t mean he didn’t rape women. Either Trump or Cuomo.

So now, I will ask you what you think of Brad Lander's candidacy? I watched the debate and I thought he self-described very well. I'd already read the NYTimes analysis of the candidates, and reasons they found him the best choice.

No candidate is "perfect," a truth hard for all of us to accept when we "fall in love" with our candidate as I did with Obama, in particular, and that flame still burns within me...But I digress...

But given that I am no longer living in Manhattan, although I self-identify as a born and bred New Yorker, I am emotionally, as well as politically, invested in this campaign. So, I would appreciate your response, as well as responses from any other New York City voters who might read this.

Thanks again!

UPDATE to my previous post. After watching this 50 minute interview with Zohran Mamdani, I would definitely be voting for him if I were still living in Manhattan. I also learned before I watched the interview with Tim Miller of The Bulwark (link) that AOC endorsed Mamdani. But I needed to hear him speak substantively and more than in generalities before I made my decision. And Tim's questions and Zohran's responses very much impressed me. I am not easily impressed. Moreover, I get a gut feeling about people, particularly politicians, and I found him to be authentic, quite comfortable in seeing and expressing nuances, and having a wry and warm sense of humor.

I believe any of you here will appreciate the interview!

Unfortunately, Zohran has no experience running anything and even very little experience legislating. Mayor of New York is no job for an amateur, in fact, very few professionals can handle it as the only decent mayor we've had in the last 30 years was Bloomberg. (I'm a NYC voter). While I like the idea of free buses, I don't know how you would finance that and his other ideas are just wide-eyed impractical. We have a lot of mentally disturbed people and shoplifters making our lives miserable here. The mayor doesn't control the price of groceries. NYers are not likely to vote for a left wing guy, particularly after DiBlasio (Zoran's hero) who was a reviled mayor.

No, they’re actually not and what you’re describing is exactly what’s wrong with the Democratic Party. You think too small while the other side is literally burning our constitution and using the federal government as a hammer against us you just wanna vote in more people who will collaborate with them as opposed to go after bold ideas that absolutely can be funded based on the taxes in New York City alone. Tax hike on the rich, it’s not that hard of a concept to grasp. Stop being scared of change and embrace it. I’m glad you like the idea of free buses, that’s probably the only one that would affect you. But others need the other things like the housing and programming, etc. Please don’t vote for Cuomo.

Bloomberg is really a Democrat (long story) and one of the few ultra rich who gives away his money to good causes instead of clawing for more and more. I never said who I am going to vote for and am not advocating for anyone. I'm not afraid of good change but I live in the real world. Obama lives in the real world too.

Because there is nothing debunking it, every single vote in Rockland County went to Trump. If the Harris campaign had requested the recount that they absolutely should have, then maybe it would’ve been caught sooner. But no they refused to.. they were too worried about sounding crazy and that’s what Trump and his fascist supporters and enablers wanted all along. We already knew Republicans can’t win unless they rig the game, but this is on a whole Nother level. They legitimately stole this election. And it was always clear that Trump could not have gotten that many votes, could not have won every swing state, but now it’s really clear. Period especially after the no King’s protests this weekend. Up to 13 million of us showed up. There are way more of us than there are of them and that’s why they’re starting to freak out and lash out.

( 2500 soldiers are in a base in Iraq on the border with Iran, he does not care.)He wants to be a King and is punishing America for Not allowing him to be one. Everyone needs to wake up. Congress and the Supreme Court can save America but will no do so. Impeach 45/47, Vance and get rid of the entire cabinet.

https://youtu.be/kw0NtaL0vPg?si=HFvssX27yoWYTq5f why NYC retirees cannot support Zohran for Mayor. Retirees aren’t active members of their former unions, and cannot be included in collective bargaining. Collective bargaining only affects those workers’ union working conditions, pay, and hours. Retirees have no pay, hours, or working conditions. Further, one of the largest unions’ retirees have the lowest pensions, some only $25-35k/year. Premiums to find and buy their own Medicare Part B are prohibitively high.

Expand full comment
Carole Cramer's avatar

Zohran will not sign a pledge to support NYC municipal retirees’ efforts to maintain their Medicare Part B coverage through the City. Zohran says he supports the retirees but will not commit by signing a pledge. Words are cheap and easily rescinded as Mayor Adams showed us. Retirees aren’t asking for anything new, we’re only asking to maintain the exact same coverage we’ve had for 60 years. We worked for lower wages and often no raises at all when the city was going through hard times, because we were promised both at our hiring and retirement that our Medicare benefits would be there. Giving retirees a Medicare advantage plan is not equivalent and not an advantage with its high copays, very narrow network, and required prior authorizations, delays, and denials. Eleven judges have agreed in litigation over the last four years. 250,000 NYC municipal retirees do not support Zohran for Mayor.

Organized crime in Chicago traces back at least as far as Al Capone. So, nothing new there. My maternal grandparents were part of the Polish migration to Chicago back in the early 1900s. Trump wants to harass Chicagoans into submission because he wants Illinois' electoral college votes for his third term as POTUS no matter what the U.S. Constitution says. So much for law and order a la Trump.

This guy speaks well with some presence and on the issues this is the kind of speaker we needed in the USA house and Senate too because even though Hakeem is a Paul Weiss trained attorney and he's very intelligent. He speaks like a slow motion legal robot.

People want to connect if Zohran stays on it and he gets some boots on the ground on his campaign out there getting people to vote I think he can win and I think he could make a difference because he's got the right spirit 😲👍👍👍

Give it everything you've got Zohran and and make the people in the country and city. Understand we used to be a team. We used to care about each other.

The old team is broken

Give the people some REAL hope that's all they want. That's all I want. I get so disgusted when I see people brainwashed for Trump my own family members and friends. You can't get through to explain hay every word a lie man I'm sorry he's just robbing you he never was successful in his life.

Once again, we have a populist. He's saying he's going to do all these things - because once he's mayor, all he has to do is say it and it's done. Sounds like another guy from Queens who can't understand why things don't just go the way he wants.

But he'll gets lots of support from the progressives, who are outnumbered by "not progressives", and he'll pave the way for a Republican to win. Not that I want the criminal Cuomo anywhere near the mayor's office even if he still claims to be a Democrat...

Oh, and btw - our "brothers and sisters" are being put into horrific prison cells, deprived of decent food, water, and sleep. But I think the word you're looking for is "Gulag", not "concentration camp". A few million dead people who were systematically slaughtered, many upon arrival, would beg to differ from your use of that phrase.

Mr Mamdami might be without a thick resume’, but he has energy and good ideas. If there were someone experienced in governing NYC in his staff, he would have someone to learn from while he works. I have been placed in job situations in which I had no experience, but I asked questions of older, more experienced people and I learned. I would not vote for Cuomo. I really liked him during the pandemic. He seemed to be working hard for NY and staying on top of the situation. I live in VA, but I watched his daily updates. After his scandals, I no longer thought so highly of him. I was very disappointed.

When I look at our politics across the board, the country appears to be afflicted with a rag tag mob of populist noise makers lacking the prerequisites of serious and effective leadership. Yes, relevant experience and the willingness to seek out and utilise advice intelligently, and with an ability to achieve and implement outcomes through negotiation and fostering participation with others of demonstrated good character. The social media culture panders to simplistic, emotionally charged talking points to sway voters who can carry the can for much of this, comforted in their biases, contentedly ignorant. New Yorkers will I think pick a more hard nosed and capable person over a populist full of promises. Trick is to have someone of such ability and character in the ranks of the contenders. I admit to being increasingly pessimistic in recent times, but remind myself that isn't very useful.

I generally hold Meidas in high regard but am disappointed in the softball interview of Mamdani. It's easy to rant about authoritarians, corporate and oligarch beholden stooges and promise a "chicken in every pot". Who wouldn't want "rent freezes for over 2 million New Yorkers, free and fast buses, universal healthcare", but I didn't hear a word from an obviously ideologically motivated but inexperienced prospective manager about how to pay for that. Will there be a real estate tax, property insurance, fuel and utility and labor contract freeze to enable the non-predatory landlords to continue to provide much needed low cost housing, or are we to assume that all landlords are predatory profiteers who can afford to absorb rapidly increasing expenses without increased rent. Is he drinking the same koolaid that Trump is that businesses can absorb his arbitrary, irrational, punitive, tariffs without increased prices? AND I didn't hear any explanation for his virtual holocaust denial and support for the authoritarian, anti-humanist Hamas oppressors of the Palestinians who would, if they could without being murdered by Hamas, probably like the Iranians, choose to live under Israeli rule rather than their own corrupt terrorist regimes. Mamdani doesn't yet talk the talk, let alone know how to walk the walk. Unfortunately, there's much much less disagreement about the problems than there is about the solutions. Like DOGE, if the car has a flat tire drive it off a cliff. Mamdani is just another promise 'em anything to get them to vote against their own interests.
