Hi guys, I was motivated to write about this today after watching your podcast and Bernie Sanders talking about things that are usually not talked about. I've been receiving Social Security for several years now, the reason I decided to apply for it was because I couldn't get hired into the medical records field after going to school and receiving two degrees. What I don't understand is I have about $200.00 deducted every month from my check to pay for my Medicare. At the end of the year, for tax purposes, that money that was deducted is added in to my earned benefits. That is something that has never made sense to me, does anyone have an explanation?

Hey, as a retired public school teacher I resent some of the comments about teachers-We all have college degrees & most of us also HAVE MASTER’S Degrees- our districts select the curriculum & those days when kids are off - we aren’t playing checkers! We’re working w/our colleagues in our building & across buildings to make sure that we are tweaking lessons for our students! How do we assist them to have a better understanding! Ways to supplement for students that are struggling, as well as those that excel! To take them as far as they can go each year by carving out supplemental work time w/ small groups. My daily 1st grade Lunch-a-bunch group would ask to have lunch w/me , in my classroom rather than eat in the loud cafeteria. They’d tell me what worked well for them & what they were struggling with & we’d figure out together how to tweak a lesson for them. That 15 min as we ate & talked was very beneficial to them & I always made sure that they also got outside for lunch recess! As that 15 minutes was my only time all day 4 a bathroom break.
People with monetary means send their children to private schools. Having said that, in my state our property taxes will rise due to lack of federal funds.

About the gutting the Dept. of Education. The point has to be made that society benefits by an educated public. Every child deserves to be educated in this rich country. The states are in charge of how the money is spent for that, but they often don't have enough money to deal with things like special needs kids for example. The Dept. of Education at the Federal level fills in the gaps for the states. This is what Trump and others want to shut off. Cruel and short sighted.

Retired US Teacher w/ both Bachelor’s & Master’s degree in WI. Closing the Federal Dept of Education is not that big of a deal in Pre-K to 12th grade. What we got from the Fed Dept of Ed was mostly money that paid for teachers, aides, some supplies for children with physical, cognitive & speech disabilities. College students did get certain Federal grants and loans that helped them pay for college. States each have their own education departments & that’s where certain programs are developed & money is allocated to local school districts. The majority of costs for schools, are paid thru state funds & local school districts levies. Curriculum is also chosen on the district level, with some things that may be required by the state.
