Merry's avatar

I agree. Trump has been diagnosed by several experts as a narcissistic sociopath. And as such, he lacks empathy, as we’ve witnessed. He also thrives on mocking and humiliating, intimidating and bullying others.

Apparently there’s nuance, depending on how others’ reactions and opinions impact HIM, his personal agenda and his poll numbers:

“Focus on self:

They are primarily focused on their own needs and desires, often at the expense of others. This self-centeredness can lead them to disregard the opinions and feelings of those around them.

Exploitation:

They may use and exploit others to achieve their goals, without concern for the emotional consequences.

In essence: While a narcissistic psychopath may appear to care about others' opinions in certain situations, this care is often superficial and driven by a desire for self-preservation and control rather than genuine empathy. They may be highly attuned to how others perceive them, but their capacity to understand and care about others' feelings is severely limited according to Medical News Today.”

Shrinking Trump (https://www.youtube.com/@ReallyAmerican) elaborates on this topic, along, of course, with his advancing dementia, which exacerbates his personality defects. Yet his unspeakable entourage at the WH, along with the most rabid MAGA cultists seem to think he is a true American, because of his xenophobic, homophobic and vile, bigoted disposition! He is, as I know very well, at the opposite pole of what it is to be a true American - personally I believe the Obamas personify that ideal.

What gets me, and I may be very wrong here, is that at some point this is going to backfire on the donors. The tariffs will all be passed on to the consumer so they won't hurt profits, but consumers will just have less money to buy and the same profit on fewer items seems not a good business model. And while many working class folks will get tax breaks, for many many their home owner's insurance and car insurance will go up because replacement parts will cost so much more, and that money does not quite get put back into the local economy. It means less for folks to spend at Walmart. It might go to fixing one home or car but again, there won't be more profit in doing those things. I have no idea how much profit GM makes from new cars, but I think I read that new cars aren't selling well and they are about to tack on a whole lot more to the purchase price which will hurt more. I keep thinking I must just have no clue how things work and I'm totally wrong but then I don't see how wrong I can be....take money out of the pockets of consumers and fewer things are bought and that means less profit.

This country hasn't fought for its life since the Civil War and apparently we can't recognize that we're in great peril. In business and politics the kind of people who were born with a backbone and sense of integrity have been replaced by spineless sycophants, afraid to lose the only thing they possess: money.

Expand full comment
Merry's avatar

Actually the 1960’s were a time of great turmoil and social /cultural unrest, for a wide range of reasons …Assassinations, an unjustifiable war along with a draft that forced young boys to go off and fight in a war, against their will, that was extremely unpopular. Gender and cultural inequalities were wreaking havoc. Followed by the tumultuous Nixon years..His corruption, and the Watergate scandal that ended with his resignation.

The defining difference was that politicians had more integrity then and even the GOP wasn’t willing to ignore or provide cover and instead they told him he had to resign or he would be impeached.

As a nation and because of Trump, we’ve sunk to a new level of widespread corruption and we’ve been consumed by greed and power, by politicians and corporations alike, to bend and break the rules of engagement, from the presidency on down. The courts are controlled. The SCOTUS is a rubber stamp. And Trump MAGA supporters are literally a cult and believe everything he says, primarily because they’re so dumbed down and ill-informed.

The media, the so called fourth estate, can in general no longer be trusted because they are consumed by ratings.

Politicians have forgotten who they work for, who pays their salaries. US, WE THE PEOPLE own the government. It belongs to US. So it’s up to US to stand up and remind them.

I could go on. But you get the point.

The world is watching as Trump makes a laughingstock of us. Everything, our very future, our children’s futures, our freedom, our rights, our democracy, all hinge on this moment.

Trump cheating at golf merely amplifies the absurdity of the current situation and makes us seem foolish. Trump is making a mockery of us.

Can we find the collective will to rise up and meet this drastic occasion with the level of grit and verve that’s required?

Yes, I believe we do because America is an idea that’s worth fighting for.

And MEIDAS leads the way!

My generation is what you described. At a young age, we knew the cost. Bomb drills, hiding under desks. As teens watching our friends and relatives being DRAFTED. You are right Merry. This is a test for the young. We can never stop telling them these stories.

Expand full comment
Merry's avatar

Exactly. We lived through an era that was filled with promise and hope. Yet it was equally an era of disruption, upheaval, a sort of “reset” of a 1950’s “Fathers Knows Best” family structure that subjugated women to a short list of restricted roles.

The 1963 assassination of JFK was a turning point that jolted Americans out of their naïveté and also stimulated a surge of cultural backlash among the youth that in turn gave us a new social movement, a new collective voice, extraordinary music that both reflected and defined the times.

That movement gave rise to the satire of the the late 60’s into the 70’s, Laugh In, All in the family, the Jeffersons, Saturday Night Live, the Cosby Show, Different Strokes, Happy Days, Mork n Mindy etc aired.

Yes, the youth need our wisdom, our experience, our honesty. They need to listen to, and understand the real challenges of their grandparents, their elders, their predecessors so they won’t take democracy for granted. And so they can truly understand the challenges they’re facing now. And why it matters: BECAUSE THEIR LIVES, THEIR FUTURES DEPEND ON IT.

Uhhhh, you could make an arguable claim, perhaps, that America wasn't compelled to help in WW !, but WW II was a clear, unambiguous "fight for our lives," don't you think? I was but five when at minutes after 1:00 PM Pearl Harbor Day we got the word in Brooklyn, walking distance from Navy Yard, and my mother became deeply anxious over the danger of being shelled by a pinching attack by possible Nazi submarines off Long Island's shores. Where, did YOU get your lower schooling, Anne??

Expand full comment
Anne Gayler's avatar

I got my lower schooling hiding under desks from the atom bomb and other leftovers from WWII....and remember the war as the daughter of a Naval Officer who fought in the South Pacific. But this was a different fight for our lives...we were a country united against a common enemy. During the Civil War we were a country fighting to the death among ourselves. If we are going to fall it will be from within. I stand by what I said.

Expand full comment
Hendrik Gideonse's avatar

Proudly, apparently. But what you said, baldly, was "this country hasn't fought for its life since the Civil War" . . . I'm willing to accept, now that you've clarified, that what you meant to say that 'we've never fought AMONG OURSELVES since the Civil War.'

Language is important. The structures of sentences count. In the present circumstances, MAGAts and their fellow travelers, the Christian Nationalists,. are flatly wrong about their assertions of how this nation began and evolved and formulated itself structurally, the court began its particularly journey of decay, and then the moral and personal decay of Trump, the shifts of income distribution in America leading to oligarchy, and the egregiously lingering effects of slavery, our treatment of native Americans, and our knee jerk discomforts with those others who look different than "white folks" has led to the MAGA eruption. Not knowing history results in its repetition. And here we are . . .

I apologize for coming at you harder than I should have. My parents immigrated here beginning of the last century. They'd be appalled. I was raised on history, political science, and philosophy and then have put it tto work in government, university, and public service. I have two middling young granddaughters whose futures I'm scared to think of. I spend my days participating in this kind of dialog, showing up for number counts, trying to reason with anyone willing to lead and just don't see it making any damn difference at all. I'm in my 89th year. So long as I can continue to challenge the effects of long COVID on my writing, editing, post, e-mailing, web searching etc. etc. I will be in these trenches. Persevere.

I have to be honest, I have no clue about what kinds of contracts reporters might have. It seems to me anyone that wants to be a journalist/reporter would indeed press trump for real answers and not stop until there was a real answer and they would fact check him in real time to his face and if their employer would not let them do that, they'd quit and tell the world why they quit. But on the other hand, I try to respect people who honor a contract, sort of....maybe a lot of reporters live paycheck to pay check and even if those pay checks are a lot bigger that the vast majority of Americans, you do get used to having that income and if you have not saved up a lot to get you to the next job it may be financially hard to just quit, maybe pay contract breaking penalties, especially if you kids. I try to believe that's the case with these reporters, but to be honest I have a real hard time believing it.
