I'm all the way down here in the comments and I want to pose the dilemma I find myself in squaring Michael's past (!) with the wholly unexpected coherence of his arguments in his columns over the past few months. They make SENSE to me and I (excuse me, Michael) have this difficult-to-shake image of MC as toady to the man who has destroyed my image of the seriousness of the American presidency. Can anyone offer insights to my dilemma?? I find so few straws to grasp on. I will be out there tomorrow, but I'm a little bit leery. I'm 89 and chose my venue pf several available to us with a friend to reduce the physical demands of securing our presence consistent with my age. I'm scared to death for my charming granddaughters. I'm beyond being scared of being maimed, injured, or extinguished. I talk regularly with acquaintances whose allegiance with MAGAt's I cannot begin to fathom but whom I still like or share a sense of humor. Can anyone out there help me come to terms with Michael???

Cohen always said it was about what the great Elijah Cummings said to him at the end. How he said he knew he was going off to prison, and he saw Cohen with his daughter, who.still had braces, and it got to him because he had 2 daughters, and he thanked him, and he knew how hard it would be, but it was part of his destiny, and hopefully that destiny would lead to a better Michael Cohen. And I saw the look of Michael with a mixture of sadness, maybe a little defiance and remorse, and teary eyed, and Elijah Cummings had such grace about him. We really lost something when he passed soon after. He was a good man. I think it was something Cohen needed to hear. That he could turn his life around, Just look at the difference in Congress then, to now. If it happened today he would be fed to the wolves.
The article is so Michael Cohen, how he still gave it back to Jim Jordan when he questioned him, and some other things, but it it was the Elijah Cummings part. And he was right. Michael Cohen (and Lev Parnas too) showed me that redemption is really possible. I have never, not once, not believed what Cohen told us. Everything he said has come true. I know I probably would have loathed his arrogance before his downfall when he was with Mango, but it makes me love him more to see what he had to go through to become who he is today. He is so bright, articulate,and so New York funny and brash.. He is capable of introspection. He took responsibility and went to prison. He paid his dues. He deserved a 2nd chance. I remember his first Mea Culpa podcast with Rosie O'Donnell who I think went to visit him in prison and you know how horrible Trump was to her. Then he joined Ben. I've really came to love him. I think to his family he's a loving son, husband and father and.think he's probably a great friend.
PS: I think you are fabulous going out there tomorrow. Glad you'll be with your granddaughters. Just be safe, and if you feel any discomfort, leave. Let us know. I really can't wait to hear everyone's experience. 🙏

I took a day to track down the gift Atlanta article you were so kind to extend to me. And then the No Kings prep, and losing two days on line to Los Angeles trying to understand what seemed to be (and still is) happening there (the city where my UC-I prof [etc] son lives downtown less than a mile from the ICE-induced upheaval). And then the No Kings event itself, for us in Winchester, MA, not quite as cold as April on the Commons but drizzily chilling for older dudes like me.
The Quinta Jurecic article was a perfect (!) explanation to address my question. Indeed, if it hadn't been written six years ago, I had the eery feeling reading it that the article could have been a magical emanation of the quandary that stimulated your response to me.
Realizing through your generous lead that I can trust my own assessment of transformation, and have it underwritten by Jurecic and no less a figure than Elijah Cummings, is comforting, yes, but intellectually reinforcing as well. It also underscores for me the attractive elements of the Substack model which enables direct conversation threads of mutual support and enlightenment so much more powerful than the linearities of email.

Yes, she is an excellent writer and the article stands up 6 years later. I like "The Atlantic" very much, plus I like the fact that they are generous allowing subscribers to share articles. I'm a moderate who likes to listen to all voices. And I will never forget the wonderful Elijah Cummings. I am sure if he were alive he would have been horrified, and speaking out strongly about what has happened to our country. What got me the most was when he spoke from his heart about being a father of two daughters himself. (I adored my father). I understand how it is hard for some people to reconcile the "other" Michael Cohen to the man he is today, but the lesson he has been very clear about to Trump's other toadies from day one, is if they think Trump won't turn on them, look what he did to the man who said he would take a bullet for.
I enjoy substack for the same reason. It's always a pleasure to speak to kind, thoughtful members. We don't always have to agree, but it's so much better when we can be respectful.

I completely understand your dilemma. It’s hard to reconcile the man we saw on tv vowing to destroy anyone who dared to speak up against this boil on humanity with the man who now tells us what a horrible person he is, which he knew all along. I too am leery. Maybe sometimes someone has to be brought to the brink of their own demise before they can tell the truth? I don’t know. But at 72 myself I don’t think it’s too late to listen. I had my mind made up before MC turned on his former boss. I think you did too. Tomorrow we fight. It’s all we can do.
He worked for trump, committed white collar crimes for trump, was prosecuted and sent to prison, and was disbarred. At present he appears to be trying to make up for the wrongs he committed in his past. That is all that I can come up with. Apparently he hates trump as much as we all do. We each have to go from there and make up our own minds.
I really noticed a big change in Michael Cohen. With Trump he looked haggard and had dark circles under his eyes. Once he separated from Trump and accepted responsibility his face radiated peace. To me that displayed a genuine change of character.

I’m going tomorrow to No Kings. I know the importance of speaking out. I know the importance of signaling to others that we are in this together. My viewpoint is only in the fact that infiltrators are abundant right now and I’m frustrated at their audacity and ability to do these heinous things - and blame the left. (Of which I am obviously a part of) Trump has given them the green light and they are using it to go forward. It’s also frustrating because they are a small percentage of our population. The majority are with us.

The underlying truth is that he doesn’t want to govern. He wanted desperately to stay out of court and ultimately out of jail. I'm all the way down here in the comments and I want to pose the dilemma I find myself in squaring Michael's past (!) with the wholly unexpected coherence of his arguments in his columns over the past few months. They make SENSE to me and I (excuse me, Michael) have this difficult-to-shake image of MC as toady to the man who has destroyed my image of the seriousness of the American presidency. Can anyone offer insights to my dilemma?? I find so few straws to grasp on. I will be out there tomorrow, but I'm a little bit leery. I'm 89 and chose my venue pf several available to us with a friend to reduce the physical demands of securing our presence consistent with my age. I'm scared to death for my charming granddaughters. I'm beyond being scared of being maimed, injured, or extinguished. I talk regularly with acquaintances whose allegiance with MAGAt's I cannot begin to fathom but whom I still like or share a sense of humor. Can anyone out there help me come to terms with Michael???

Cohen always said it was about what the great Elijah Cummings said to him at the end. How he said he knew he was going off to prison, and he saw Cohen with his daughter, who.still had braces, and it got to him because he had 2 daughters, and he thanked him, and he knew how hard it would be, but it was part of his destiny, and hopefully that destiny would lead to a better Michael Cohen. And I saw the look of Michael with a mixture of sadness, maybe a little defiance and remorse, and teary eyed, and Elijah Cummings had such grace about him. We really lost something when he passed soon after. He was a good man. I think it was something Cohen needed to hear. That he could turn his life around, Just look at the difference in Congress then, to now. If it happened today he would be fed to the wolves.
The article is so Michael Cohen, how he still gave it back to Jim Jordan when he questioned him, and some other things, but it it was the Elijah Cummings part. And he was right. Michael Cohen (and Lev Parnas too) showed me that redemption is really possible. I have never, not once, not believed what Cohen told us. Everything he said has come true. I know I probably would have loathed his arrogance before his downfall when he was with Mango, but it makes me love him more to see what he had to go through to become who he is today. He is so bright, articulate,and so New York funny and brash.. He is capable of introspection. He took responsibility and went to prison. He paid his dues. He deserved a 2nd chance. I remember his first Mea Culpa podcast with Rosie O'Donnell who I think went to visit him in prison and you know how horrible Trump was to her. Then he joined Ben. I've really came to love him. I think to his family he's a loving son, husband and father and.think he's probably a great friend.

Elijah Cummings’s words to Michael showed such graciousness, and an opportunity for redemption. Hannah Arendt’s words

I also had difficulty at first reading Michael’s articles and watching his conversations with Ben, trying to reconcile his past with his present person. I have only been a subscriber to Meidastouch for a few months, but I always look forward now to Michael’s articles and contributions. I admire him greatly.

Dear Robin D,
I took a day to track down the gift Atlanta article you were so kind to extend to me. And then the No Kings prep, and losing two days on line to Los Angeles trying to understand what seemed to be (and still is) happening there (the city where my UC-I prof [etc] son lives downtown less than a mile from the ICE-induced upheaval). And then the No Kings event itself, for us in Winchester, MA, not quite as cold as April on the Commons but drizzily chilling for older dudes like me.
The Quinta Jurecic article was a perfect (!) explanation to address my question. Indeed, if it hadn't been written six years ago, I had the eery feeling reading it that the article could have been a magical emanation of the quandary that stimulated your response to me.
Realizing through your generous lead that I can trust my own assessment of transformation, and have it underwritten by Jurecic and no less a figure than Elijah Cummings, is comforting, yes, but intellectually reinforcing as well. It also underscores for me the attractive elements of the Substack model which enables direct conversation threads of mutual support and enlightenment so much more powerful than the linearities of email.

Yes, she is an excellent writer and the article stands up 6 years later. I like "The Atlantic" very much, plus I like the fact that they are generous allowing subscribers to share articles. I'm a moderate who likes to listen to all voices. And I will never forget the wonderful Elijah Cummings. I am sure if he were alive he would have been horrified, and speaking out strongly about what has happened to our country. What got me the most was when he spoke from his heart about being a father of two daughters himself. (I adored my father). I understand how it is hard for some people to reconcile the "other" Michael Cohen to the man he is today, but the lesson he has been very clear about to Trump's other toadies from day one, is if they think Trump won't turn on them, look what he did to the man who said he would take a bullet for.
I enjoy substack for the same reason. It's always a pleasure to speak to kind, thoughtful members. We don't always have to agree, but it's so much better when we can be respectful.

I completely understand your dilemma. It’s hard to reconcile the man we saw on tv vowing to destroy anyone who dared to speak up against this boil on humanity with the man who now tells us what a horrible person he is, which he knew all along. I too am leery. Maybe sometimes someone has to be brought to the brink of their own demise before they can tell the truth? I don’t know. But at 72 myself I don’t think it’s too late to listen. I had my mind made up before MC turned on his former boss. I think you did too. Tomorrow we fight. It’s all we can do.
Every saint has a past and every sinner has a future.
Michael Cohen could've gone away and hid under a rock after trump abused him and broke up with him.
But he chose to do the right thing and tell the truth and turn against trump.
Now is all that matters.
Michael is using his platform for the good of America.
He has insider knowledge that he shares to aid in understanding.
He is the trump whisperer and his insight is valuable.
He worked for trump, committed white collar crimes for trump, was prosecuted and sent to prison, and was disbarred. At present he appears to be trying to make up for the wrongs he committed in his past. That is all that I can come up with. Apparently he hates trump as much as we all do. We each have to go from there and make up our own minds.
Trump made sure he was sent back in for writing his book, too. Michael suffered greatly.and knows Trump well.
Yes. I think it’s important to mention that.
I really noticed a big change in Michael Cohen. With Trump he looked haggard and had dark circles under his eyes. Once he separated from Trump and accepted responsibility his face radiated peace. To me that displayed a genuine change of character.
Yes. I remember that myself. "The truth will set you free" is powerful.

There's SO much more here. Especially on the Breath & Depth of the Heritage Foundation! This is a serious deep dive and it's informative, eye opening, Terrifying, but overall, the more we know....the better we can be prepared. LordyLord these are some dark days - He's spot on...it's time to buckle up buttercups, put on our big gir/boy/us/they/them pants, strap on Dem Stompin Boots and stay

And Kristi Noem, the DIRECTOR of Homeland Security, which is a role one would think would require some understanding of the people and the demographics of this country, apparently thought it to be a priority to “liberate” the people of Los Angeles….? Seriously?
Um, does Kristi Noem have a clue that L.A., and the entire state of California, for that matter, is overwhelmingly…BLUE and DEMOCRATIC? California is as about “liberal” as it gets. And I think the people of that state, feel pretty groovy about that…no more “liberating” needed or requested.
Wishing us all “Good Vibrations” for the state of California, America, and the world tomorrow. Time to be strong, be brave, be American, and be HUMAN.

The problem isn’t that we’re all going to the protests. It’s that the protests mean nothing to Trump & his Admin /Gang. Tomorrow every all right group is going to send infiltrators to the large cities and stir up problems - just like they did with the George Floyd protests. All those “Antifa Looters”? Antifa just means anti-fascist & that usually means anti-Violence. It was a prepared and probably paid alt-right goon squad that did those window smashings

As historians of fascism have shown, protests are extremely important if you want to restore democracy.
Indeed, they don't necessarily make a fascist president and his party change their mind, but they signal to everyone else, from government employee to Democrats and Republicans in purple districts, that they CAN go full in, that they have the people's back, and that turns out to be absolutely crucial.
And look, Trump is already backing off from deporting farmers. So in Trump's case (a very weak dictator), protesting DOES work!
I’m going tomorrow to No Kings. I know the importance of speaking out. I know the importance of signaling to others that we are in this together. My viewpoint is only in the fact that infiltrators are abundant right now and I’m frustrated at their audacity and ability to do these heinous things - and blame the left. (Of which I am obviously a part of) Trump has given them the green light and they are using it to go forward. It’s also frustrating because they are a small percentage of our population. The majority are with us.
I do believe that it's more than "infiltrators". The entire GOP became neofascist, with many different factions, all believing that fascism is better than democracy. That "brand" has always existed, in the US. It's also what neoliberals always said (in the words of Peter Thiel: capitalism and democracy are incompatible).
But yes, indeed, not only are neofascists demonstrably wrong, the majority has always rejected their ideas, and that continues to be the case today!
Also, as Heather Cox Richardson pointed out yesterday, for now, most neofascists in DC are really not the smartest people out there, so we are still in a stage where we CAN defeat them.

Protest organisers have said that if you notice anyone being an instigator - move at least 6 feet away from them.
If instigators are being violent again move away and then sit down interlocking arms with other peaceful protestors. That exposes who the instigator is.
I never understood why “antifa” is somehow a terrible word. My dad fought in WWII in the Pacific Theater AGAINST the fascism of Japan’s Hirohito while others fought against Mussolini and Hitler in Europe. So Eisenhower was antifa too!!

The irony of it all? It's precisely when 60 Minutes asked Kamala Harris one of the most stupid questions ever (Netanyahu doesn't seem to listen to the US president?), to which she had to diplomatically give no answer, apart from saying that she and Biden had prevented much violence... that Trump felt "emotionally harmed" by her answer and is suing CBS for a whopping $20 billion.
THIS is what happens when a US president gives Netanyahu the freedom to do whatever he wants: instead of achieving what Obama already achieved (a deal in which Iran gives up fabricating nuclear weapons), Trump, who's a notoriously bad negotiator, decided to let Netanyahu solve the problem by bombing Iran. Obviously, so much violence will NOT lead to "peace". Violence begets violence. Everyone knows that.
