Florida Senator Rick Scott is facing a tough re-election opponent in Democrat Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, and he continues to refuse to schedule a debate. With early voting in Florida just a few weeks away, the incumbent Senator is showing no signs of being willing to defend his abysmal record and even more abhorrent policy proposals.
Mucarsel-Powell agreed the three debates early on. Scott would never commit. She had repeatedly taunted Scott on social media and in the press, asking why he is so afraid of her:
"An old and tired and corrupt politician being scared to debate a strong woman, a qualified woman with a clear vision on how to build a better state. Does it sound familiar? We have now accepted three debates. He has been dodging the question. He's obviously petrified. If I were him, I would be too."
Mucarsel-Powell then went after Scott on his policy proposals, noting that he wrote the basic framework for what would become Project 2025. She pointed out that he also has favored a national abortion ban, although now he is back peddling on that issue despite still opposing Florida's abortion rights referendum.
How ironic that in his last election six years ago, Scott taunted his opponent for allegedly not wanting to debate him.
In an interview two weeks ago, Scott was asked if he thought Trump should agree to a second debate with Harris. He said, "I would. I would do as many debates as possible." He was then asked by Manu Raju if he was going to debate his democratic opponent. Scott immediately started sputtering:
"I'm gonna, I'm watching to see if she's going to start traveling the state. She spends all of her time in Miami. I will continue to travel the state." Scott then tried to go to another question, but Raju returned to pin him down and ask him if he would commit to a debate. Scott replied, "No." Pretty lame excuse to say that you won't debate your opponent because of her travel schedule.
Although this has been a tight race, most experts still figure that Scott will win this race in a state heavily trending Republican in recent elections. But with popular initiatives to legalize marijuana and reinstate reproductive rights on the ballot expected to bring out lots of new voters in Florida, anything is possible.
What we do know is that Rick Scott is afraid of Debbie Mucarsel-Powell.
I would seriously like to see that debate.
