Hi all, Ben here. It’s Sunday, and there is a lot to get through today. Let’s start with what we’re tracking:

  • Washington, DC has the worst air quality of any major city on the planet this morning, thanks to Trump’s fireworks mess

  • Cleanup crews are literally wading into the Reflecting Pool to scoop out ash and debris

  • Interior Secretary Doug Burgum went on a Sunday show tour again blaming “vandals” for the pool’s damage, and it did not go well for him

  • Furious MAGA fairgoers say Freedom 250 state fair logistics were a disaster, with hours-long lines and no water in extreme heat

  • A severe storm forced a full evacuation of Trump’s July 4th event, and he still delivered his speech, despite lots of empty seats

  • Netanyahu sat down with Fox News to declare himself a peacemaker while Israeli strikes continue in Lebanon

  • Israel’s Supreme Court crisis just escalated, with Netanyahu’s cabinet voting to defy a court ruling for the first time in the country’s history

  • A mother who blamed vaccines for her twins’ deaths on RFK Jr.’s old podcast has now been indicted for murdering them

  • A federal judge rejected Trump’s request for more time to pay E. Jean Carroll

  • Michigan Senate candidate Mallory McMorrow is ending her campaign

  • And some news for World Cup fans: FIFA cleared Folarin Balogun to play for the USMNT against Belgium on Monday

Let’s dig in.

Washington Wakes Up in a Toxic Cloud

Donald Trump wanted a fireworks show for the history books, and I suppose he got one, just not the way he was hoping. The morning after his massive July 4th display, the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments issued a Code Purple air quality alert for the entire District, the most severe warning level there is. Meteorologist Matthew Cappucci described hazardous, firework-induced smog hanging over the city and warned residents to stay indoors.

It gets worse.
