SPEAKER 1
So I'm starting to see this headline circulate quite a bit on social media, talking about how that Trump is planning to make massive cuts to social security and Medicaid and government programs that are put there as safety nets for working people and for poor people.
0:14
I'm seeing that headline starting to circulate a whole lot and people are saying, well, wait a minute, this ain't what we voted for. Why is this happening? Yeah, it actually is what they voted for. And if they were paying attention to their own guy, he's been saying all along that that's what he was going to do.
0:29
And we all know the real reason why he's doing it. He's doing it to pay for the tax cuts that he's going to give people like Elon Musk, Joe Rogan and The Undertaker and Sylvester Stallone and every other person we used to once upon a time look up to. He's doing that to make them richer.

Tennessee Brando: Trump Supporters Are Voting To Blow Up Their Own Lives

Trump voters depend on the very safety net programs he wants to cut to benefit his rich friends

Our blue dot in a red state reporter, Tennessee Brando, shines a light on the disconnect between the policies Donald Trump advocates for, and the interests of many of his supporters. Brando argues that Trump's tax cuts for the wealthy, like his buddies Elon Musk and other billionaire elites, come at the expense of safety net programs vital to working-class Americans, who voted largely for Donald Trump.

Meidas+ is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

These voters think they are fighting perceived “others” who Trump tells them are their enemies, but actually they are only voting to hurt themselves and their families.

Brando shares a personal experience of him once arguing with a friend who said that working class people on government assistance are lazy and just looking for handouts, only to find out that the person he was speaking to was unemployed, and spent his days on Facebook railing against the very safety net programs he was using to survive. Brando is frank about the fact that where he lives people take advantage of government assistance all the time while attacking others in their same financial predicaments.

Brando torches the MAGA movement, who for 10 years has said “f**k your feelings,” who then turn around and completely vote on feeling and emotion instead of rational facts. He likens their support for Trump to "chickens voting for Colonel Sanders," emphasizing how their choices ultimately harm them and their families. Despite these challenges, Brando remains hopeful, urging us all to keep fighting and to continue standing on the right side of history.

Support Tennessee Brando and all the contributors at MeidasTouch who work to give an honest independent perspective to what is happening to our country. We don’t have billionaire investors. Consider becoming a paid subscriber today.

Medicaid pays for nursing homes care, this is not covered by Medicare. I’m worried about what will happen to people if kicked off Medicaid and no longer able to stay in a nursing home.

I've had the same problem, Karen. When on a bulletin board online or social media in general a person reports on something that's bad, while you may really dislike the substance of the report you may well be glad that the person posting is making the information known. Some genius has to devise a way to differentiate the two so it doesn't look like we're supporting Trump's statement that the disabled should die, which is reprehensible, but do support the poster for bringing this to our attention.

We got a hint during the worst of the early pandemic - nursing homes were over capacity, there wasn't staff to cover them all, and they suffered and died.

A friend with ALS, who was in hospice in a nursing home, was literally almost kicked out on the street. It took multiple lawyers and several family members scrambling for days to prevent her being literally dumped. She was paralyzed from head to toe.

The only body part she could move was her eyes. She communicated via an eye tracker, that they often forgot to set up properly. She spent hours and hours texting me and another friend, almost every day, begging us to call the nurse's station to clean her. We'd call, they'd say they were coming, then they wouldn't. She'd spend hours soaking in urine and feces.

She eventually died from a bed sore that ate into her spine, resulting in sepsis that infected her central nervous system before everything else. She died in such agony that they needed to put multiple fentanyl patches on her. Lucky for them, she was on a ventilator, so she couldn't make noise as she screamed.

That's the world America voted for - at best. Many won't have the resources behind them to at least keep them indoors while they die of neglect.

60% of those on Medicaid work. 25% of those on Medicaid depend on it for their nursing home care.. the idea that people are lazy and just need to get a job is comical! 7 out of the top 10 states that use government assistance most are red states! 39% of those on SNAP are white and 27% are black! Childcare per child averages 5000$- 12,000$ per year… the people that receive these benefits work at Walmart, and work at Home Depot and work full time and pay child care and still cannot afford to feed themselves and their families. There are children being forced into this world and after they are born Republicans are nowhere! They are the ones taking free lunches from children so they can line their own pockets. I fear the despair, fear, and death about to hit this country. God Help Us.

Literally people voted gains themselves on every single front except for transgender issues… the fear that transgender people would “corrupt” their children and that immigrants would and are “taking their jobs and killing their children” is literally the ONLY reason why people voted for TRUMP because it certainly want because he’d lower prices or gas. But no one watches the news and if they do it is not put in literal “elementary” language in short bursts that they’d understand and 95% of media is conservative. We need to get out our message in the same basic Neanderthal way.

All the while, for some reason, would constantly get laid off and then would collect unemployment and any other government assistance program he could get. Seriously, stayed home while wife worked but would rant about "those" people who are so lazy and living off the government dime. Yes, he would sit all day and watch Fox News. Probably moved on to Newsmax.

Based on the 40+ years I worked at Social Security endlessly hearing white people on Social Security endlessly complaining about "lazy colored people who sit on their ass watching TV, collecting nice fat welfare checks and food stamps and driving Cadillacs" I know they live to see Trump and Republicans kick down "those people"

And they actually do not care if their benefits are cut as long as most of the hurt is aimed at "those people". They actually enjoy seeing them get hurt. The times I heard them so happy that George Floyd was killed made me sick...and I had to keep my mouth shut when they said that garbage.

I keep hearing "we will get throught this," and I have even said it myself. Here's the problem I have. When, in American history, have Americans ever feared that there would not be another presidential election? Did they feel that way when Nixon was elected?

I despised GW Bush with a murderous passion, but not once did it ever occur to me that there might not be another election even when I felt the corrupted Florida vote was the only reason (my feelings not trying to push it as a fact) Bush made into the Office.

If only I could truly believe that America, as we knew it prior to 2024, will continue as a democratic republican system. I have no hope, so if y'all have some to spare, I am poor and needy in spirit, mind, and faith.

Also, IMO a lot of MAGA folks won’t ever swallow their pride and admit that they are wrong in supporting trump. They also have no interest in researching how the policies trump talks about will look in reality. I give trump credit for playing into ignorance from the start. “I love the uneducated,” was one of his first statements. He knew that repeating slogans is much more effective than explaining policies. That’s what Democrats need to learn. We’re not going to win with only educated people. Dems need to figure out QUICKLY how to talk to the people that benefit from our policies.

I'm scared and angry over all the stupidity. Why? tRump is going to appoint low-lifes to run this country into the ground. From the ashes tRump will rise as the hero. Good grief people... that is what you call a DICTATOR! How many are going to die? By then, I want to still be fighting for the true, this country , and our grandchildren! A lot of them didn’t even know that the ACA is the same as Obamacare!

I’m only on Social Security and if it’s cut I don’t know how I can survive. I have Medicare & Medicaid and lots of health problems, I’d die without them to cover my healthcare. I worked hard during my life. I supported 3 kids by myself as my ex husband didn’t pay child support. I couldn’t save a dime towards some kind of a pension. So all I have is SS. I don’t even have a car.

I’m Thankful for creators like you.

Trump could care less if people get kicked off of Medicade....... He told his own Nephew, about his Nephew's handicap son, to "JUST LET HIM DIE"! Trump and his rich cohorts, would rather have handicap, sick and the elderly to just go away..... to die off.......... They want only healthy people to work and to keep making THEM rich!

True!! I did not listen to the Podcasts for Trump, but here is my guess!! Those young Hispanics, who voted for him, were knowingly lied to and told that only those who were criminals would be deported, not the undocumented also, also the Muslims who voted Trump, and against Biden’s Israeli Policy, did not realize that it was actually a surefire

vote for Netanyahu, and, Of Course,

anyone on special Veterans care and support, or Special Education support, boy have they got a surprise for you!!

Have you still not read Project-2025, with his saying for almost a year, of course, Trump’s biggest lie of ALL!!

Some people are too proud to say they need government assistance and others try to get it and don't really need it. Like you said Brando, they'll cut off their nose to spite their face! And a person can be healthy today and be diagnosed with a terminal illness tomorrow or be involved in an accident through no fault of their own and need medical assistance. Everyone needs health insurance because we can't predict the future! You have to be morally & intellectually bankrupt to support Trump!!

I think about this all the time. So many people in my family are Trump supporters, but they are also the ones depending on these government programs. My sister is on SSI and either Medicaid or ACA, and it scares me that these programs are going to be taken away from her because of the very person she voted for. My brother-in-law is also on SSI and my parents have Medicare. I pray that the Democrats come through for them again, but it may not happen this time because they do not control Congress anymore. If any of this comes to fruition, all I can tell them is that I didn't vote for him.

This is wildly unhelpful. Demeaning people who outvoted us is no way to win the next election. We need to listen to them, understand why they voted the way they did, understand how to reach them instead of insulting them.

I’m sure it feels good to yell into the void. It is also sure to keep Trump in power and after he passes, his acolytes will keep doing the same things.

As incredibly frustrating as it is, we either realize we need to understand Trump’s success and co-opt it or we sentence our families to a life lived under a fascist.

And we all know the real reason why he's doing it. He's doing it to pay for the tax cuts that he's going to give people like Elon Musk, Joe Rogan and The Undertaker and Sylvester Stallone and every other person we used to once upon a time look up to. He's doing that to make them richer.
