I'm my husband's caretaker. He's a changed person, in later stages of dementia, who in the past was a sweet, caring, loving spouse and amazing father of our children - until the tragedy of his illness, which slowly crept up on us. I have to learn how to manage his unpredictable and erratic behaviors, while all the while keeping him safe, well nourished, physically healthy, and as happy and calm as possible.
He's my soul mate, and I will never abandon him. I take my "til death do us part, in sickness and in health" vows seriously and we've managed to live 62 years together as a dedicated married couple. We've been besties since high school. He still recognizes who I am, "his wife", but he doesn't know my name.
I truly wish Alzheimer's could be avoided and I curse DJT and Elon to Hell for cutting dementia research funding!!!!!
Sandra Wallace. I’m sorry to hear that about your husband. I have been very involved with patients in acute care, who have dementia or Alzheimer’s. And also with my Mom. Their personalities do change, and their behaviour can be erratic and aggressive. I truly admire you for your commitment to your husband. And understand it. I hope you have good support people.
