As an atheist, I think “fear of god” is a very negative concept and cause of countless wars, injustices, etc. The bible is one of the most horrific books ever written. Jesus spoke of hell (eternal torture) for those who didn’t believe in him—more than anyone in the bible.

I sort of agree with you. I think that maybe, believing in God and parts of the Bible has helped a lot of people find comfort and maybe the numbers of those outweigh the numbers that have been slaughtered and whatever because of religion. There have been millions maybe billions of people who have lived lives of quiet desperation and maybe some misplaced belief system is all they have and they don't go around doing mean things. But then how many believers have lived lives of feeling totally inadequate and inferior and like they are a loser because no one if good enough for god?Personally, I don't understand how people that seem to be otherwise quite intelligent (Jimmy Carter, Barack Obama, Stephen Colbert. Joe Biden) are such strong believers and for me, it just does not make sense that an all loving all powerful god would allow any of the suffering. As a child I would not want a parent who makes you beg for love, who does not show unconditional love (weird that Jesus said love one another and there were no qualifications...one another means everyone not just white people like you but most of the bible says y o have to do certain things to get to heaven, there is no unconditional love/entrance to heaven from god), and on a very personal level, I don't understand how a kind, loving god would let animals evolve that can only survive by eating other animals. If an all knowing all powerful being still wanted to have a world where beings died he/she could have made it so there was no suffering from birth to death and death came peacefully during sleep. I don't like to confront folks about their belief in some all powerful (but in my mind incredibly mean) being as for some folks, that's all they have to get them through the day (opium of the masses) . I do with more (actually all) the Democrats in Congress would constantly remind their maga counterparts of the words of Jesus and ask them how bloody roundups of anyone fits into that, or how denying health care fits in with healing the sick or, well the list is endless (possible starting off with worshipping a man who has violated all the Ten Commandments they claim to hold so dear).

Expand full comment
Reese Erwin's avatar

Thanks again for these very interesting comments. I’m not very confrontational in person but now feel I should “come out of the closet” as an atheist because there’s such disdain for us by many. And many people think the only way people can be good or moral is through religion, god and the bible.

I assess a person’s generosity by how much they have left after giving/contributing. I am not favorably impressed by so-called philanthropist billionaires who contribute many millions of dollars to some cause when I realize that 1 billion is 1,000 million. So when they contribute hundreds of millions, that’s like me contributing $5!

I am saddened when I see Michelle Obama wearing expensive designer clothes or when they have bought multi-million-dollar mansions—3 stunning ones, including the $12 million mansion on Martha’s Vineyard. Or when Oprah gives away millions yet lives so extravagantly with her billions—massive real estate portfolio, the one in Montecito worth $100 million!

So, I’m not impressed by their financial contributions. How can they live so extravagantly and ignore the obvious needs around them?

A grandson once said as a teen, “There’s no such thing as a good billionaire. If they were good, they would not me a billionaire.” I feel that way with a multi-millionaire even.

Expand full comment
Pat Robinson's avatar

You are 100% correct!!! While the places that receive those big gifts do benefit , like you say it's such a drop in the bucket and you and I both give much more proportionately than these "do gooders" who live in mansions. I don't know about Michelle Obama's dresses, they may be given to her as advertisement for whoever makes them but the extravagant living of all the folks you mention is indeed sinful if, you believe in sin. No decent person thought less of Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter for their unglamourous lifestyle. President Biden is retiring to a 6000 square foot home in Delaware which may seem extravagant but the average home being build today is about 2400 square feet and that's the average so lots are a lot bigger, and that's for regular people, not former presidents who hopefully will be doing lots of "entertaining" with folks determined to preserve democracy and address climate change (he has said we will be hearing from him, unlike Bush who sort of slid into the wood work except he has, weirdly supported immigration and immigrants (despite what I think of him as a president, his paintings of immigrants are an interesting way for him to have chosen to spend his retirement).

Expand full comment
Reese Erwin's avatar

Very interesting comments. I think many who claim to be believers are actually closet atheists. Many politicians and other prominent people know that atheists are still held in great disdain. Many are cultural Christians, not true believers but atheists or agnostics, I believe.

Expand full comment
Pat Robinson's avatar

I think you are right. For sure none of them follow the directive of Jesus to sell all their belongings and give the money to the poor and then follow him. A true believer would do that I think. There probably are lots of folks who don't quite give up all they have because the reality is that would leave no one to do all the hard work it takes to help the poor like build buildings, raise food, provide health care and I think/hope that there are lots of folks who, while not giving up all they have do in fact give a whole whole lot and never let it be known. I watch some shows on PBS and find it interesting when they give credit to sponsors, who I think are giving a whole lot more than my $15 a month contribution and they are folks I've never heard of like the John T and Catherine T MacArthur Foundation..I assume John T and Catherina T were or are real people but they just do good stuff behind the scenes. I do believe that Biden and Carter are/were very sincere in their faith but also in their commitment to the Constitution and keeping the two separate.

Actually if you read the entire Gospels, WWJD would take on a realistic, horrific meaning. Jesus spoke about hell more than anyone in the bible. He condemned to hell and eternal punishment those who disagreed with him.

He never condemned slavery. Had no women among his disciples. Often disrespected his mother. Showed a lot of anger. Said “no one comes to father except by me.” Thus, many bible-believers Jews, Muslims, unbelievers are going to an eternal hell.

Yes, Jesus said some nice things…Sermon on Mount, etc. but that cannot compensate for his awful statements. Most people are ignorant of the bible and Jesus’ teachings.

The back-and-forth on atheism, Christianity, hate, and meanness, and whether Jesus was a true spokesman for love and peace probably will not get us anywhere. I am sure we are all in agreement that sending anyone the kind of loathsome message Ben shared is a despicable thing to do, born of arrogance and permission from their leader Donald Trump. Let's combat that viewpoint and the power that has drawn people to it. It's source beyond Trump may be less important. An old friend of mine has long pointed out that some people are just "cruddy," and she tries not hang around or listen to "cruddy" people. I'm all for fighting cruddiness wherever I find it even when it is just sloppy and mean spirited echoing of the Hater in Chief.
