As an Afghan veteran who was left behind after so many promises from the current US government I read this part about allies very differently.I was also told many promises, and we were told America would not forget the people who stood with them. But many of us are still waiting and feeling abandoned.So when I see the US government treating Canada a real longtime ally, with threats and pressure,it honestly does not surprise me anymore.

A government cannot keep asking people and countries to trust America while breaking that trust when it becomes politically convenient.Canada should not have to accept a bad deal just because Washington can put more pressure on them. After what happened to people like me I know very well that promises from a government mean very little if there is no action behind them.

I think the problem has been for several decades now that the story we Americans tell ourselves is very different from reality. I wish America would honor its promises to you, but the problem is America has been letting a significant portion of our own citizens fall through the cracks. We are not and have not been taking care of our own. Americans are no longer interested in taking care of each other. Americans are interested in finding scapegoats for their problems instead of accepting responsibility for electing lawmakers who are courageous and honest and genuine and not just in it for the power. 77 million Americans did not accept responsibility for doing their homework. They voted instead for someone who told them they didn’t have to do anything AND he would lower their taxes. The level of avoidance of responsibility among citizens and leaders makes sustaining a democracy untenable.
