Gwen,

You think MSNBC tells it viewers the truth. Maybe every once in a while. But the biggest crime perpetrated on the viewers is what they are not telling you. They won’t show you any story that does not fit the lefts narrative. You folks always cry “ That’s a lie” or “That’s misinformation”. But never bright enough to know when you’re being kept in the dark. Maybe you should seek information from all sources and use your own critical thinking skills to determine what YOU think is the truth. But that won’t happen, the left’s useful idiots are more than happy to parrot talking points from the puppet masters on high. Almost for a year all we heard was Free Palestine. From the river to the sea. I’d bet $1000 anyone carrying that sign couldn’t tell you what river or what sea. And then the “Gays for Palestine” signs. This is ignorance at its highest level. You know what they do to gays in the Islamic world?

Anyone who uses "the left" to disparage what's going on in the U.S. has drunk too much right-wing Kool-Aid. The right, backed by big business and the very wealthy, has always been the big threat to democracy in this country. What do you think the Civil War was about?

Expand full comment
Davids Dad's avatar

The civil war was about preserving the GREAT idea that is America. And bringing to truth that all men were created equally. And in this Civil war America righted one of her greatest wrongs.

No, it wasn't. It was about money. The Northern merchants thought the Southern merchants were charging too much for commodities (since the South had what the North called "free labor"). The North wanted to take away the "free labor" in retaliation. The South began to spread propaganda stating that the North wanted to take away the South's way of life. Yes, there were a few abolitionists with humane purpose, but the war was about money. And just like then, the poorly educated masses of today believe the propaganda.

Kris Lovaas's avatar

This sadly makes more sense. Wars are always about money, power & greed or “My God is better than your God”.

Expand full comment
Janet Wilson's avatar

To be fair, it was also about ending slavery. Many, many at the time wanted to see an end to that practice. The difficult part was that slave owners, and prospective slave owners, saw the absolute economic benefit (to them) of slavery. So yes it was about money, but more about moral failure in deciding what path one could take to wealth.

Expand full comment
Susanna J. Sturgis's avatar

OK, now riddle me this: Why were so many non-wealthy white Southerners willing to fight for "the South's way of life"? Maybe, just maybe, it had something to do with the fact that even for the poorest, most tangential whites, there were always people who were even further down the ladder than they were.

If there was fascism in America do you honestly think you would be seeing any of these “No Kings Protests”. No you would NOT! And the people gathered would likely just disappear, never to be seen. It’s clear all you folks who are crying about fascism have absolutely no idea what it is. You didn’t even recognize it when it appeared on our American campuses. In fact you supported it and glorified it as free speech and freedom. So your whining about fascism is merely grandstanding. You want to learn about fascism talk to a holocaust survivor. You want to learn about freedom, go talk to a Cuban exile from the Castro days. But you won’t. You’ll just take it as gospel from your socialist “progressive” professor feeding our youth a plate full of failed ideologies and generally crap information. Fascism is alive and in America! I wasn't going to weigh into your attempt to disregard Harry Truman's sage advice, "Never kick a wet cow paddy on a hot day," but I must respond to this outrageous comment.

You have lumped me together with your false stereotypes of Democrats and all the beautiful, patriotic, democracy loving No Kings protesters by parroting lying Mike Johnson's dishonest characterization of us as "socialists, Marxists, and people who hate America."

We LOVE America. We LOVE democracy. We LOVE our Constitution, written in defiance of an abusive king and wisely constructed to prevent future abuses of power through checks and balances between three co-equal branches of government (which our MAGA 6 "justices" have now destroyed by granting the president the powers of a king).

Yet I, like you, was horrified to see the disruptive protests immediately following the horrific Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel. I thought the protests should have been against HAMAS—not their victims—and got into many arguments with others who instantly turned against Israel. Why? That viewpoint was being amplified on TikTok, where the majority of these students now get their news and "culture." Several college administrators said that viewpoint had become the "cool" opinion on campus. You are right that many of them had no real understanding of a very complex and intractable conflict.

But who controls TikTok algorithms and supports Hamas? China. And who has now upended Biden's ban on TikTok unless it was *wholly* owned by an American company? DJT, who initially wanted to ban TikTok—until he saw he was getting a lot of positive attention on the platform. Only then did he illegally violate the ban deadline—until he could arrange a deal for his billionaire supporters to buy it, while continuing to allow China to control the algorithms and access our data.

And who has vowed to protect Qatar—the same country that has given over $1.8 BILLION to Hamas—as if it were a NATO ally? And who will allow them to build their own facility in Mountain Home, ID as well as train them on F-15 fighter jets? DJT.

I suggest you read a very short, but unforgettable book by Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel, "Night." You will learn how, even when his fellow Jews had been rounded up by the Nazis, required to wear yellow stars of David, and imprisoned in a ghetto, they did not believe a former religious scholar from that very same ghetto after he had escaped a mass murder by the Nazis of deported Jews and came back to warn his community.

THEY DID NOT BELIEVE HIM. Why? Because it was too horrible to contemplate! I think that's where you are now. No, we're not under complete control of this authoritarian regime yet, but until you comprehend the fact we're heading there faster than a skateboard running down a steep hill, YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM, just as the Germans who remained silent were before and during WWII. The entire MAGA Congress and our president are now implementing the very same tactics Hitler used to acquire power: dehumanizing anyone who disagrees with them, calling them vermin who are "poisoning the blood of America," labeling them Marxists and communists simply for marching for democracy.

You think we're stupid? You appear to me to be militantly ignorant of what we are losing every day, and of what historians who have studied how democracies fail are telling us: DO NOT OBEY IN ADVANCE. So I ask you one question: Do you support the MAGA agenda? If so, you and Israel are in for a rude awakening. Israel needs to dump Netanyahu and we need to dump Trump and MAGA.

This is not a football game with two teams; it is a fight between those who understand the bounties of freedom of speech and thought, which have allowed innovators and economic prosperity to flourish, and those who are so afraid of people they neither know nor understand that they can't even sit down and have a civil, open-minded conversation with them.

Did you see the signs and the people from yesterday's marches? I'm pretty sure you didn't because if you had, you would have seen all kinds and colors of folks, including Jews, Republicans, scientists, and veterans, full of love and compassion for their fellow man. Check yourself. You say "all I hear is this word racist and fascism." Open your ears.

I'll end with a quote from a protest sign: "May the frog be with you." And I am NOT referring to Pepe the Frog; I'm channeling the Portland PEACEFULLY protesting frog.

You are clearly much brighter than the average daily person posting. You have an incredible ability to convey your opinion. Maybe just a little bit more of historical truthfulness and not just labeling us as Fascist and racist. Those words are only used to instill hate and fear. Which we already have enough of. Also it dilutes the real meaning of those words. We should really save them for when the next Stalin, Hitler or Pol Pot is unleashed on humanity.

It already has been unleashed on humanity! Have you not been paying attention to people being disappeared and ripped out of their homes and sent to God knows where? Do you not see how this administration is in one of the biggest coverups in history by not releasing the Epstein Files? What about the fact that the Republicans won’t even begin to negotiate with the Democrats about reopening the government because they don’t want to continue the subsidies for the ACA so millions will either lose healthcare or it will be outrageously expensive! But we can send money to Argentina and bail them out. Really I honestly don’t get how anyone can think that what is going on in this administration is good. I don’t understand why you folks with TDS haven’t figured this one out yet. The files will NEVER be released. I’ll bet they no longer even exist. Why you ask. Like it or not…… the Democrats and Republicans are all politicians. Politicians don’t really like putting other politicians in jail. I think Scooter Libby was one of the last. There are too many people from both sides of the aisle who travelled on Epsteins planes. Not to mention doctors, lawyers, judges, men held in high esteem with the public. And if you can't believe everyone needs health care because you don't care about others, then think about how it will affect you too: spreading of TB, the next pandemic, measles, resurgence of polio, getting hepatitis B from eating in a restaurant served by people without health care access or sick leave. Do you seriously think people will be provided "a safe environment for its citizens to persue their own path to happiness" without access to health care and equal civil rights?

I want the Epstein files released and I don't care who is implicated or what political party they belong to. I want justice for those young girls!!! I want sick predators held accountable!!! Every single Democrat in Congress wants the files released, so don't lump them in with the MAGA and DJT toadies who are goldbricking on our tax dollars because they refuse to sign in a duly elected member of Congress.

Do you seriously support the man who intends to pardon Maxwell? Do you seriously hold these sick predators in "high esteem"? If so, you will have yourself to blame if the Nazis and fascists win this fight. Why not take a trip to Russia to get an idea what it will be like for you? Poor David. Perhaps you would be more successful making your points by dropping the arrogance and insults.

I agree that even MSNBC is parsing current events, just much less than others and of course Fox "News" just lies constantly. As a Canadian, I am also disappointed that CBC is being overly polite in reporting the appalling events in the USA.

As for signage, I do not see why you would think gays should not advocate for a free Palestine. They of all people know what persecution feels like. Perhaps there is a lesson there.

Expand full comment
Davids Dad's avatar

Would they advocate for them if their brother, sister or any loved one was murdered just for being gay? Compassion is one of humans greatest qualities. But it doesn’t need to be wasted on others who only want to eliminate you for a lifestyle. Myself, I would reserve my compassion for more worthy brothers and sisters! Evil is alive and well…….. better learn how to recognize it.

Expand full comment
Janet Wilson's avatar

You conflate judgment against homosexuals with the right of a nation to be free and free of bombing and deliberate persecution. And not so long ago, homosexuality was outlawed in Western nations as well...and continues to be persecuted by Christians, even in North America.

I am sure that in Palestine, as everywhere else, persecution of homosexuals is not universal amongst the citizenry. So your black and white approach is unfair and contradicts the clarity of thought you recommend to others.

Finally, evil is alive and well, and flourishes when good people choose to do nothing. Recognition is generally universal. Action is not, alas.

Compassion is one of our greatest capacities...but I disagree that it is ever "wasted" on those who persecute others. It is easy to hate others for their actions, but the real test of your compassion is to condemn the action, while understanding the drivers and motivations. Only then can you seek remediations. Note that ICE and the appalling actions of this administration are dependent on that remorseless judgment that every perceived transgression deserves ultimate punishment and in addition, sans due process.

I would posit that the mess the USA finds itself in is directly attributable to a series of failures to understand the drivers and motivations of voters who consistently vote against their better interests.

Expand full comment
Davids Dad's avatar

You’re as human as the rest of us. Your emotions are the same as the rest of us. Your compassion would come to a screeching end if you witnessed your family being murdered or raped before your own eyes. Easy to be compassionate when you don’t have to deal with the actual results of evil. You would seek revenge from the bottom of your heart. Fear drives hatred. Personally I detest humans. Not much good can be said about us. And I’m sure you’re correct about the average Palestinian citizen. Probably doesn’t bother them . But when you have the leaders of Palestine instructing its masses to hate gays. Then it doesn’t really matter what the average citizen thinks. In Palestine they actually teach their children to hate from almost infancy. Go watch a Palestinian children’s cartoon. You want to be shocked and disgusted. At least in America we wait until our children are at least 6 or 7 before we teach them to hate. Children ages 1 to 5 are completely incapable of hating. They don’t see skin color until we teach them. Why do you think other nations say NO when it comes to Palestinian refugees. They don’t want that poison of thought coming to their country. I know 90% of you think I’m full of it. Check it out for yourself. Find a Palestinian children’s cartoon. They’re out there for the viewing.

I am sad to hear you say all that. In particular your stunning assumption that others have not suffered these kinds of griefs, and/or are incapable of the empathy to truly understand these griefs.

Your narrow scope on this decades old conflict (where hateful acts have been perpetrated by all sides), your hatred and hopelessness are clouding your judgment, which is not helpful, damages you, and makes any forward progress difficult if not impossible.

If nothing else, we are all here, and must find a way forward and together. That asks a lot of all of us, and we must rise to that request.

Why the No Kings Protests Matter (Fascists Fight Back) The Intercept, October 18, 2025 tinyurl.com/tvsvmf4m

[Erica] Chenoweth notes that globally nonviolent movements are meeting less success than in decades past, as regimes coordinate with each other and devise new strategies to curtail their impact, such as controlling the flow of information and working to outright criminalize protest. … The Trump administration is keenly aware of the potential for mass nonviolent protest to shape public sentiment, which is why it is moving quickly to undermine and dismantle all infrastructure for opposition and organized dissent.

[Stephen] Miller has made abundantly clear that he intends to dismantle his political opposition by forcing the narrative that any opposition to his agenda should be tamped down using the full power of the state. He recently seized his opportunity to create a new designation of domestic terrorism to justify the investigation, dismantling, and defunding of oppositional civil society.

MAGA’s first targets are organizations that have the strongest track records of nonviolently mobilizing the American public at scale and facilitating media-friendly protests that can move public opinion. Getting rid of organizations that empower Americans to participate in legible nonviolent mobilization is a great way of ensuring that the conceptions of the opposition that reach the public are those that feed the MAGA narrative of a deranged left. [Mass] public opposition is so vital now, before this crackdown fully takes hold. This is a crossroads moment for our country, and the media should give these protests the coverage and consideration they deserve.

#1 Amazon. Go ahead and use the site to find what you need. Then go directly to the website of the company that actually makes the product and buy it from them. This is what I do all of the time.

Regarding book purchases, try Portland's best, Powell's Books

#2 Universities. Alumni have power. They are major donors. Contact tour university and let them know what you think. Another approach is to contact the university's major donors and let them know what you think.

For example, in Oregon a major contributor to Univ of Oregon is Phil Knight of Nike fame; major contributors to Oregon State University are Patricia Reser of Reser's Fine Foods and NVidia CEO Jensen Huang and his wife, Lori Huang (Yes Nvidia is the company that in August 2025, agreed to a deal with the U.S. government to pay 15% of its revenue from certain AI chip sales in China.)

#3 We DO have people power. We learned that with the Jimmy Kimmel/Disney debacle. And we KNOW that we have the numbers -No Kings #2) and the momentum.

But where were all the matching signs I was told about? 😆 Most of the signs I saw were original and hand made. I thought someone was droning on and on about a mass production of matching signs. Weird.

On union picket lines you'll often see matching signs -- produced, need I say, by a union print shop. <g> In a strike, solidarity matters: "the union makes us strong." Yesterday, and at all mass demonstrations and rallies, our diversity is a big part of the message. So we're united by our diversity!

Yeah, funny isn't it? They all turned out different & unique, clever & thoughtful! No sign producing machine would know anything about originality!
