Could you clarify as to what a competent reporter could “do” here? There are several competent reporters (actual journalists) reporting on this today and prior to today. TIA

Explain the misinterpretation of the ruling, maybe. April Ryan was good at this, though a barrage of demeaning commentary always followed her pointed questions.

Perhaps set up the question with a clear explanation of the Supreme Court’s ruling, then challenge their response of ‘in our favor’. (not true)

Likely a fool’s errand in a roomful of sycophants.

My terse comment wasn’t meant to be derogatory, but a rallying cry: just to be a reporter in this climate is a righteous calling.

Expand full comment
CatChex's avatar

stephanieb - thanks for responding.

We have family and friends who are active and retired journalists (actual journalists! imagine). It is both a righteous and increasingly fraught/dangerous calling.

I don't know that the issue here is one of needing to "explain" or clarify the SCOTUS ruling - it's clear that this regime will cherry pick, reinterpret/misinterpret/ignore whatever they don't like. And they're more.... defiant? (for want of a better word right now) with every passing day.

April Ryan was very good at this, I agree.

The demeaning commentary and hostile, disrespectful, threatening behavior toward the press in the past decade+ is just jaw-dropping. Of course, some of the stenographers in the WH press pool aren't really reporters or journalists.... they're... stenographers, some of them there to troll.

In any case, we NEED journalists.

My son-in-law (working journalist) did a big investigative project years ago w a follow up book. The death threats (I wish I was kidding) among other things, were insane.

I confess to buying the group "First Amendment Socks" and enameled "America Needs Journalists" pins, in addition to food and drink and providing dog-sitting, - among other things.

Their investigations, reporting, writing were truly acts of courage.

We need more of this.

And SCOTUS needs to not couch certain decisions in what some would call "weasel-speak"....

OBLIVIOUS to how far away that is, and unable to recognize (accept??) how far IN THE WRONG DIRECTION we've already come to possible destruction. MM Harris - I don’t disagree with you which is why, many days, I spend my time on what feels like a …. fool’s errand… and I call and email these folks. I try to be polite (If I feel I can’t be polite, I don’t call at this point) - but reminding folks of their oath, what is supposed to be their responsibility to their constituents, playing whatever guilt cards I can pull out (and put into polite phrasing, with statistics, data) because I don’t know WHAT ELSE to do (me) - I don’t have $$ to throw at them (enough for them to care) - so I feel like I’m engaging in “good trouble harassment” (for want of a better description). I have neighbors who voted for this and they are in the “finding out” phase and take zero joy or satisfaction in that. What I have asked them to do (help with) is to call and let those who are (ostensibly) elected to represent all of us to tell them what we need, how things are affecting us, etc. Have a dozen (roughly) folks more on board… but I can’t be quiet, nor roll over.

Expand full comment
MM Harris's avatar

All your calls and email MATTER!!!!!! Those familiar with congress will tell us that every elected official pays CLOSE attn to polls, types of call/email they're getting, (AND, currently, they're watching the town halls, and the protests). CALLING AND WRITING can be time consuming. (I limit mine to a simple, ISSUE, PLEASE VOTE NO (OR YES) THEN THANK THEM FOR THEIR CONSIDERATION. (I also call on off hours because you can usually leave voice mail and don't have to wait for a human to pick up your call, etc.) I do not request a response. These days the assistants who are taking calls, listening to voice mail, reading email are deluged. They're not their to discuss (unless a caller has a dire problem, like mission SS check etc). They're just tallying by issue what's been requested. Not all of us has the time OR ENDURANCE or PERSISTANCE to do what you're doing, yet it a huge part of making an impression. PLEASE don't undervalue your contributions!!!!!

Expand full comment
CatChex's avatar

I absolutely do NOT undervalue my time and contributions here but it truly feels like at least a part-time job at this point. Not quite what I’d planned for 2025, but here we are. What is maddening is the lack of responsiveness from our (my) D Senators - for a variety of reasons. And I realize I’m not alone in this (I find myself wanting to respond with “can you please answer the question that was actually asked?”)

Am “old”/older? and cynical veteran of campaigns since the ‘70’s and, bluntly, and amazed that we’re still needed to march and protest against some of this $#it, again - still - again.

What I do marvel at are the 30-ish folks who, pre-election, told me that weren’t going to vote because ‘it doesn’t matter’…. except they’ve figured out it does matter. So…. how can we get information to them, mobilize them, etc.

Again. Not giving up. Not shutting up.

But this is all exhausting (as one word).

Expand full comment
MM Harris's avatar

I know what you mean. If you watch msnbc's Rachel Maddox, you know that she devotes a segment of every show to the protests taking place all over the country and, every single day. You can SEE how big the crowds are getting. Tonight she showed Bernie/AOC in LA (36.000 right in front of city hall.) She didn't have the one they all did (as a surprise, I think) in Cochella over the weekend: 125,000!!! IT IS REJUVENATING. She also remarks about what we can see for ourselves: every generation is participating. She highlights the huge crowds in solid ruby red states or areas -- it is remarkable. Yes, disappointing that so many have felt their vote doesn't matter. I think they have learned the hard way that that is not true. LOTS of trump supporters w/ buyer's remorse. Rachel = 9pm EST, repeated at Midnight--she normally does this segment fairly early in her hour. HANG IN THERE!
