Tuesday Afternoon News Updates as Trump SOTU Boycott Grows — 2/24/26

Hi all, and Happy Tuesday. Today, you are all making history. As a community, we are leading the largest boycott of a State of the Union in history — and Trump and MAGA Mike Johnson are already lashing out.

Trump has already sent emails raging against our event. MAGA Mike Johnson this morning called it “detestable.”

That’s because it is becoming increasingly clear that the conversation across the country is not centered on Trump’s upcoming address. Instead, Americans are turning their attention toward a different kind of gathering. Tonight, the MeidasTouch Network, alongside our partners MoveOn, will host the People’s State of the Union. Based on reporting from Scott MacFarlane and other sources, at least 40 Democratic members of Congress are expected to skip Trump’s address. That number continues to grow.

Members of Congress are making their position unmistakably clear. Representative Angie Craig captured the sentiment when she said, “I would rather stick forks in my eyes than be here tonight to listen to Donald Trump talk about the state of the Union.” That reflects the broader mood among lawmakers who see participation in the traditional address as legitimizing this farce of a presidency.

This boycott does not exist in a vacuum. It comes amid new reporting about withheld documents tied to Jeffrey Epstein that reference allegations involving Donald Trump. NPR’s Stephen Fowler, building on brilliant reporting from Roger Sollenberger, reported that the Justice Department has withheld files connected to accusations that Trump sexually abused a minor. According to the investigation, the public Epstein database is missing dozens of pages referencing Trump.

NPR found that the Justice Department removed some documents from the public database where accusations against Jeffrey Epstein also mentioned Donald Trump. Even more concerning, more than 50 pages of FBI interviews and notes from conversations with a woman who accused Trump of sexual abuse decades ago when she was a minor have not been made public.

NPR identified these gaps by reviewing Bates numbers, the serial identifiers used in legal document production. These numbers showed cataloged materials that were never released. Some documents that mentioned Trump were briefly available and later removed. Others remain entirely absent despite laws mandating disclosure.

When asked for comment, Trump’s spokesperson repeated a familiar claim that he has been “totally exonerated on anything related to Epstein.” The documentary record raises serious questions that remain unanswered, and the information we are now learning shows that the DOJ was taking seriously an investigation into Trump related to child sex trafficking, per reporting.

Meanwhile, economic narratives coming from Trump allies continue to face brutal reality checks. Senator Markwayne Mullin claimed that inflation has been cut in half. Current figures show inflation rising month over month.

Other Republican officials have framed fear abroad as a sign of strength. Representative Andrew Clyde stated that the United States is “feared on the world stage because of President Trump.” That framing highlights a shift away from traditional alliances built on cooperation and mutual trust.

A quick aside while you are here: I’d love to highlight one of our favorite sponsors who has sponsored this post and helped this network grow. What’s the one small shift I’ve actually maintained this year? Reclaiming my mornings. I realized a night of fun shouldn’t cost me an entire day of productivity. So, my shift is planning a balanced night out to ensure a high-quality morning after. I rely on ZBiotics Pre-Alcohol to support that goal and keep my social life and my wellness goals aligned. ZBiotics Pre-Alcohol Probiotic Drink is the world’s first genetically engineered probiotic. It was invented by PhD scientists to tackle rough mornings after drinking.

Here’s how it works: When you drink, alcohol gets converted into a toxic byproduct in the gut. It’s a build up of this byproduct, not dehydration, that’s to blame for rough days after drinking Pre-Alcohol produces an enzyme, to break this byproduct down. Just remember to make Pre-Alcohol your first drink of the night, drink responsibly, and you’ll feel your best tomorrow. Ready to try it? Go to zbiotics.com/MIGHTY now. Back to my report.

Polling also continues to get worse for Trump and the GOP. Representative Tom Emmer dismissed recent polling declines by saying, “I don’t trust these polls.” Well, the data don’t lie.

Beyond policy and polling, Trump’s financial schemes have been absolutely devastating for investors. The Trump and Melania meme coins have fallen 92 percent and 99 percent from their peaks. Retail investors have absorbed the overwhelming losses while insiders reportedly extracted significant fees and proceeds. Estimates show retail losses exceeding $4.3 billion across nearly two million wallets.

With Trump, it’s just one grift after another. He’s now airing a commercial on Fox promoting “Fight, Fight, Fight” watches. You can get yours for just…$100,000. I wish I were kidding. This is what Trump is doing as the nation reels from an affordability crisis.

Moving onto trade, Trump recently announced plans to raise global tariffs to 15 percent under the 1974 Trade Act after his IEEPA tariffs were struck down by the Supreme Court. However, he never actually signed the order. That means the effective rate remains at 10 percent. Similarly, his claimed deployment of a hospital ship to Greenland did not materialize. Trump keeps saying things in public or on social media that are outright lies and fabrications, yet Republicans continue to go along with his delusions.

In other foreign policy news, the CIA Director will join Secretary of State Marco Rubio at 3 p.m. today for a briefing to the Gang of Eight on Iran, as reports warn that a war with Iran could be imminent. The Gang of Eight refers to the eight congressional leaders who receive the most sensitive classified intelligence briefings. We’ll be monitoring this situation closely.

The truth is more important than ever. Tonight’s event will focus on issues that are too often sidelined, bringing together elected officials and citizens for a conversation grounded in transparency and accountability. Facts matter. Truth matters. Democracy matters. And we will give Trump’s fascist clown show no quarter.

See you tonight! Let’s make history!
