‘Grind the country to a halt’: Democratic Senator urges national strike if Trump meddles in midterms.

From The Guardian

“The Democratic senator from Arizona ,Ruben Gallego has proposed that, should Donald Trump try to sabotage the midterm elections, Americans should respond with a general strike that would “grind the country to a halt”.

“If we have to destroy the stock market to save democracy, we need to accept that and, more importantly, the richest and the most powerful people in the world and in this country need to understand that that is a real possibility. There is no economic stability without democratic stability. If you take away our democratic stability, we will take away the economic stability.”

From The Peaceful Solution:

All praise to the Senator for proposing a meaningful method to oppose the fascist takeover of the country. We need people of his stature to lead this effort.

It is past time to escalate the resistance, and this proposal would certainly do that. But for many people, if you don’t work, you don’t get paid. And for how long could most people keep it up? And with AI coming for a lot of people’s jobs, this would be the perfect opportunity for businesses to fire a lot of people.

Here’s another proposal that will work as well, without the collateral damage:

The Peaceful Solution-Part 1

How much do you want to stop His Royal Heinous and the fascist takeover of the country?

Enough that you’re willing to make a small sacrifice? Like altering your spending habits for a month or two or three? That could be all it would take to get the attention of the oligarchs (formerly known as The Robber Barons in the first Gilded Age, also The Fat Cats, The Greedy Bastards).

A brief demonstration of We, the People’s, power of the purse could persuade them to quit supporting HRH and the politicians who enable him.

We quit spending, except on essentials, businesses lose money, stock market goes down, Greedy Bastards pay attention to our demands.

Greedy Bastards own most of the politicians of both major parties. GBs start losing money, tell politicians to change course and do what We, the People want.

We are running out of peaceful options. The legislature and Supreme Court are controlled by HRH. He controls the executive branch, including the Military, Justice Department, FBI, ICE, the IRS. He controls all levers of power.

We, the people, still have the power of the purse. No one can control our spending, or lack of spending. When all else fails we can go on a spending strike until the business community stops supporting HRH and the politicians who enable him.

Economic warfare is the only thing the oligarchs, the business community will understand and act on. Call it a Surreptitious General Strike (Quiet Quitting). Go to work, do as little as possible. Stop spending money except on essentials. Quit feeding the corporate beast that supports the HRH.

Stop participating. Nearly 70% of the U.S. economy is driven by consumer spending. All of us. Hobble the economy and the stock market. Mahatma Gandhi drove the British from India by peaceful civil disobedience and economic disruption. We can stop the fascist takeover in  the same way.

We can keep rehashing past and present atrocities until our access to the internet is taken away by the regime, or we can DO something!

Now is the time for this Peaceful Solution.

We can also switch spending. Target the billionaires that are important to team maga. People can do this for a very long time. No more buying from Amazon for example, while small stores through Shopify Etsy and eBay are best, even Walmart instead of Amazon will hit a MAGAt billionaire. Dump Facebook, Google, Apple, open AI, Tesla, anything owned by Ellison. No more Home Depot, but Lowe’s is not actively aligned with maga. Boycott these key billionaires in purchases and in retirement accounts. Find permanent replacements .

dayna Thorpe's avatar

There has to be a better option than Walmart. Supporting the Waltons is NOT a good alternative. Their employees are paid so poorly, that they are eligible for SNAP, even those that work full time! Local grocery stores would have to be on board. They can lower prices if they know the customers will double.

Becky Suchy's avatar

They also scrapped DEI pretty soon after Target did. We got rid of our Sam's Club membership and we stopped shopping at Walmart. We go to Costco for big purchases and shop local. Costco has been pushing back against the regime and takes care of their employees. Small businesses are suffering and need support.

elliemae.padme66's avatar

But, Becky, there is no Costco in my mid-size city.

Camille Kelly's avatar

It's easy for some people to boycott the big box stores, but not everyone has the luxury of paying a little more for the same items. Survival and getting your basic needs met supersedes everything else.

Susan Raquel's avatar

That is a good point. Many areas don't have a Costco. The closest one to me is 14 miles away. If I was shopping for a family, other than just for myself, it might be worth it; however, our discount grocery store is on the edge of town and 10 miles away. No traffic to speak of as it is off the freeway as going to Costco would involve freeway, then two towns and freeway again. Not worth the hassle.

The date proposed is past.

Hanneke Wasserman's avatar

That was the starting date and to continue as long as it takes. Otherwise we won't get our democracy back

The treasury department says that the economy will get a boost when people get a tax refund check. If I do get a refund I plan to hold off on sending any of it until after the midterm elections. I won’t contribute a penny to the economy that in turn will help trump and maga win any seats this November

Jax's avatar

That’s laughable, “should he try to interfere”. That’s what trumpf has done since the very beginning! He isn’t going to stop, he has seen what he has had given to him already, why should he stop now? He has proven time and time again that the legal system is broken. The rich have always been above the law.

The Peaceful Solution-Plan B's avatar

Many are already participating. We must Spread the Word!

Hanneke Wasserman's avatar

That's exactly what we are pushing. But most people don't want to make the sacrifice and we will loose.

The Peaceful Solution-Part 3

How to accomplish a Spending Strike

“It’s the economy, stupid” as James Carville famously told Bill Clinton. It was then, and still is, in politics. The reelection of His Royal Heinous is largely attributed to the misperceived state of the economy. That’s what must be attacked, not individual corporations. The overall economy must suffer before the Greedy Bastards will pay attention.

HRH will not destroy the economy on his own (TACO). He will find a way to prop it up (like lower interest rates) because the economy and stock market are his report card and key to keeping power. The key to keeping power, as it is in Russia, China, Hungary, Turkey. They give the people a somewhat decent standard of living, and in exchange, the people have no political power. Only the autocrat has that. Unlimited.

Our best chance of success lies in obtaining high profile, national leadership and spokespersons. Fragmented, unknown groups leading the charge might work but would take much longer, and time is of the essence. Since the Disney boycott there have been more “bigger” names taking up the cause.

There will have to be a great amount of grassroot support before a national “leader” will take up the cause. Most of our supposed leaders are really followers of movements. They’ll get out front after it’s shown to have popular support. So, we recruit more foot soldiers, like ourselves, and spread the word on various Substacks and other social media platforms.

After mustering much grassroots support we can then approach some Substack writers who have many subscribers and appeal to them to take up the cause and spread the word. Writers like Jen Rubin, Steve Schmidt, Robert Reich, Heather Richardson, Paul Krugman. Again, a good amount of grassroots support will have to be demonstrated.

We will need an organized effort to encourage those writers to concentrate on this method of opposition. Possibly coordinated mass emails to them promoting the idea, or coordinated posts to their Substacks.

Then, hopefully, one or more national leaders will take up the cause. Possibly a steering committee composed of left, center and right individuals, but not current office holders. It should be seen as non partisan.

This will be a tough sell. Americans are addicted to buying. We are brainwashed from the cradle by advertising, popular culture, peer pressure, to consume. If you want to be happy and fulfilled, you must have this or that product. To overcome this, our fellow citizens must be convinced that this is the only viable peaceful solution to stop and reverse the fascist takeover. And it is.

If a single dollar doubles every day for 30 days, it reaches a total of over $536 million ($536,870,912) at the end of the 30th day.

So, would it follow, that a single voice that doubled everyday would become 536 million voices after 30 days? That seems doable.

Defeating the fascists in WWII did not happen without sacrifice from the citizens of the Allied countries. We will have to sacrifice to stop and reverse the fascist takeover of our country. We can sacrifice a little now or a much greater amount later. What kind of world will our children and grandchildren live in if we allow this to continue?

Spending Strike, Spending Freeze, Spending Suspension, Spending Pause, Economic Disengagement, Economic Warfare, Stop Spending!, even Boycott. Choose your favorite but Do It, and Spread the Word!, far, wide, and quickly, before the fascists takedown our means of communication.

Nancy Beiman's avatar

Most of the country is non union. Boycotts are easier. They literally cost nothing and no one can determine who is NOT buying something.

But that would cause inconvenience.

The Peaceful Solution-Plan B's avatar

I’m proposing a Spending Strike, not a General Strike, and it is not union related. It’s like boycotting, but extends to all businesses, not just individual ones.

What did Trump say about who ICE is arresting? He’s a Friggin’ liar!

This From All Rise Adam Klasfeld:

ProPublica and CBS News published blockbuster immigration stories yesterday.

CBS News obtained Department of Homeland Security data showing how few of the people detained have criminal records: “Less than 14% of those arrested by ICE in Trump’s 1st year back in office had violent criminal records, document shows.”

ProPublica went inside the immigrant detention center for families in Dilley, Texas. Children held there told us about the anguish of being ripped from their lives in the United States and the fear of what comes next.

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) on Sunday pushed for Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick to resign after his name appeared in files linked to the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The Speaker stands with obstructionists.

A "motion to vacate" must now be supported by at least nine Republican members to trigger a vote, a significant increase from the previous single-member requirement. We need to pressure all Republican House members re Epstein.

Votes for Removal: Once a vote is triggered, a simple majority of the House is needed to remove the Speaker.

As I said Saturday, there are more than that in Dem majority states like Minnesota, California, NY. There are more in the House problem solvers' conference.

Opposition to Speaker Election: Massie was the only Republican to vote against Speaker Mike Johnson’s election in early 2025.

Failed Ouster Attempt: Massie joined a move to remove Speaker Johnson, stating he was "losing political capital by the second".

Policy Disputes: Massie heavily criticized Johnson for working with Democrats on spending bills and for not holding votes on releasing Jeffrey Epstein files.

Repercussions: Following his opposition, Massie was removed from the powerful House Rules Committee in January 2025.

In January 2025, Johnson removed Rep. Mike Turner (R-Ohio) as Chair of the House Intelligence Committee, citing a desire for a "fresh start" in the new Congress. Turner, a critic of Donald Trump and supporter of Ukraine aid, was replaced following pressure from conservative hard-liners.

Every Republican, except one (1) singed to open the Epstein files. Surely there are eight that will join with Massie.

Does saying that Maxwell will fully exonerate Trump if he gives her clemency make Maxwell's lawyer subject to prosecution for soliciting a bribe?

Susan Raquel's avatar

Good question.

Hmmm, if not the attorney doesn't that make Maxwell the one offering a bribe?

So what if Bondi testifies. She will be disrespectful. She will obfuscate. She will outright lie. Under oath. She will be pardoned in the end, so she has no fear of lying. It is an exercise in futility.

Bob Healy's avatar

Keep digging Meidas, Trump and his clowns need to be removed from office NOW, otherwise he will make a sham of the midterms. Maxwell needs to be returned to hard rock prison and not be given clemency. Let’s go public with the Pam Bondi testimony, America needs to see her for who she really is, “Trump’s lap dog”

🇨🇦 Donald Trump has sunk the United States into the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. You can see on the faces of Americans at home and also in, Italy. The American Olympic Team is trying their best to put on a brave face because of the chaos and the finger pointing one of the American Athletes. This should be a happy and exciting time for them, but it's not. Bad enough they have a lot of pressure to do well in their races, they don't need the bullying or reminded that; 'Trump' has sent; 'ICE' to Italy. I have never seen a sitting president or prime minister bully their athletes like this one is.

What I do see from the olympics is, the other competitors are rallying around them to give them the confidence that they need. To know that they're not alone and understand that everyone needs to respect and encourage athletes to do their best. To be honest with you, all the athletes from all the countries that are competing in this olympics are winners. I say that because they were chosen for their talent and ability to perform at their best. maybe they might not win a medal but the fact that they represented their country and that's the important thing to remember.

So America send encouraging messages by social medias to your teams. Let them know that you're proud of them for representing your country.

As far as the; 'Toddler In Chief' is concerned, when the olympics have finished then it's the time to get your self; 'Organized and Motivated' for your mid term elections.

Become a leader and get your neighbours, friends, co workers and families together and get out to register people for the election.

Those who are working or a student at a college maybe you can set up a few tables for students to sign up for it. If your children are graduating high school maybe you can do the same.

It's time for everyone in America to; 'STAND UP TO A BULLY'. So America, pull yourself up by your shoelaces or boots and get out there and start a grassroots campaign for the candidate you support. Remember; 'There is nothing to fear but, fear itself'.

Good luck America and don't forget to have fun.

P.S. As far as becoming a; 'Paid subscriber', I'm not working at the moment but I do have the; 'Free option' on; 'Substack'. Sorry about that.

Deli Lanoux's avatar

Jeanne, you're in the best group ever with the rest of us. You add to our numbers, so hip-hip-hooray!! Have a wonderful day!!

Jeanne Hodgson's avatar

Deli Thank you so much for your words of encouragement. I really appreciate it.

Deli Lanoux's avatar

We're all in this together, Jeanne. Every single one of us matters in this fight against the terrible Trump regime. Thank you for doing your part by sharing your thoughts!!

Jeanne Hodgson's avatar

Deli, tRump is still bullying us in Canada. In fact we just opened an embassy in Nuuk which is in the Artic to protect Canada and Greenland. Imagine, we're so close yet the hate is so harsh. So, I lost my job to the tariff wars that are happening and I'm keeping good thoughts in my head because, I have joined a community that I really believe in. In fact Meidas has a Canadian connection so it makes me feel even prouder to be a part of it.

I hope and pray that the midterm election will be successful. I can cheer everyone on from here. We're not allowed to send money because we're a; 'Foreign' country so it's illegal for us to do that. But, we're here. We see what's going on. We're sad that our neighbours are in this chaotic mess. But I know many will stand up and say enough and do something about it.

Deli Lanoux's avatar

I love Canada, our wonderful neighbor to the north. Lovely folks, just like Charlie Angus. Your thoughts and prayers for us here in the U.S. are much appreciated. I'm always greatly touched each time a Canadian stands tall with and for us. Thank you!! God bless you and keep you safe. May you find work that fulfills you. Great meeting you, Jeanne!!

Jeanne Hodgson's avatar

I love Ben and Charlie. I'm so glad that they're working together. You really do get the best news from them. I think more people are going to start having more podcasts on; 'YOU TUBE'. They can reach more people and we can have stimulating conversations in our communities.

Yes, please stand 'TALL and STRONG'. I know that there doesn't seem to be a bright light now, but in the center of the tunnel there will be a little light that will grow when you get involved with the political issues that are important for you. As you do that, the light will get brighter your heart will grow brighter and you'll feel so good by doing something not only for yourself, but for the senior, younger and future generations. So the goal is to hold on to your democracy. Hold your head high and say to yourself, 'I'm going to do my best to encourage my family, friends neighbours and co workers to stand with me and, support the candidate you want to see win in your local, state and federal election. I would love to see America in a beautiful shade of; 'BLUE'.
