I dunno. When 36% of more of the electorate doesn't vote something is deeply wrong in the system. That 36% of this country don't feel like their vote matters is the issue. And they are right to think their vote doesn't matter. Oligarchs have captured American Politics, American Media, and American Finance. They have also gutted education so that the average voter has little to no information about the substantive difference between the candidates. Trumpism is a symptom, not the disease.
Or... oligarchs managed to take over, inside a democratic system where everyone has the right and power to vote and therefore decide what laws will be made precisely BECAUSE (1) one third doesn't even bother to vote and (2) among the others, many (most?) are misinformed or even caught up in a bubble of neofascist propaganda.
I do agree that it's not entirely people's fault when they don't understand why voting is crucial. A solid education system is vital to obtain a thriving democracy, and having the media refrain from any form of cynicism and regularly explaining how the democratic process works is crucial too. Both are terribly failing in the US, and for decades already.
Finally, a thriving democracy is only possible if "we the people" regularly engage in real, respectful debates with fellow citizens, whereas I feel as if this "civil duty" has disappeared too. Instead, all too often we avoid discussing politics in the first place. That can never ever work.
Put all three factors together and it becomes clear why and how oligarchs managed to grab power. It's because we LET them - mostly unwittingly.
