When I was a kid, I used be sent to the corner store to buy them for my dad and uncles and I was only about 10. In those days, from a single, there'd be enough money left over to buy a Coke, a bag of chips, and a candy bar. Science changed our thinking.
As soon as I found out I was pregnant. in 1974, I quit drinking alcohol. Since then I have had a glass of champagne at a wedding and a free Kalua and Cream, probably 20 years ago.
In 1964 or 1965, in one of my Freshman or Sophomore college classes, a lot of emphasis was placed re the damages alcohol could do to a fetus. That stuck with me.
Cigarette smoking was not emphasized at all at that time. I remember when cigarettes were a dollar a pack. Someone else remembered them at 68 cents or so.

Throughout my college years (and maybe a few years before, if I'm honest) and up to my late forties, I would drink more than I should have. But... feeling crappy the day after started to wear on me. Plus, lately new studies suggest that any level of alcohol consumption increases dementia risk and that would be a fate worse than death for me. If they find out coffee is bad too, well damn it, I won't be happy!
