One of the TV shows I was streaming addressed this. A psychiatrist was counseling a young man who was at odds with his father over trump. The young man suggested it was akin to a cult. The psychiatrist agreed, but noted that in his observation, that unlike other cults, he didn't think the trump cultists could be deprogrammed and explained why.
I wish I could remember which TV show it was (I happened to run across it as I was channel surfing). I know it was just a TV show, but what the physician said made perfect sense to me.
