I note also that when any gift in excess of $17,000 is made, the donor (the person who give the gift) owes something called "gift tax" which I suppose is noted on the annual tax return for the year in which the gift was given. The donor must file a schedule 709 form.
The donee (the person who gets the gift) does not pay tax on it.
