When Bombs Fall, Truth Must Rise

In the aftermath of Trump’s bold claim about obliterating Iran’s nuclear program, too many are cheering while the truth, consequences, and actual facts remain dangerously unclear.

Let me be clear: I’ve been in the room when decisions were made, statements were crafted, and facts were—well, let’s say rearranged. And one thing I’ve learned the hard way is this: in matters of war and peace, it’s not only our right to ask questions—it’s our responsibility.

So when the President of the United States stands before the nation and declares that Iran’s nuclear program has been obliterated by a precision military strike, the first thing we should all do is not celebrate or condemn, but pause. Ask. Verify. Demand clarity.

Because while headlines shout victory, the facts remain elusive.

What exactly was hit? What exactly was destroyed? How much uranium had already been moved? Was any of it even still on-site? And most importantly: how long has this set back Iran’s nuclear ambitions, if at all?

These are not rhetorical questions. These are matters of national and global security.

The strike itself, utilizing what we’re told were state-of-the-art bunker-buster bombs, was designed to target hardened underground facilities deep within Iran. And if those targets held the material or infrastructure tied to uranium enrichment or nuclear weapons development, then yes, this could represent a meaningful blow.

But here’s the problem: we don’t know. At least, not yet.

According to initial public assessments—including those shared by Pete Hegseth, our illustrious Secretary of the Department of Defense—the raid was a total success, fully dismantling Iran’s nuclear capabilities. But that’s an assertion, not evidence. Even John Ratcliffe, Trump’s former Director of National Intelligence, has been more measured, suggesting the intelligence community “cannot confirm the full extent of the damage.”

So why are we rushing to conclusions?

War, or even the use of force in pursuit of peace, demands accountability. It demands transparency. There is no room for assumptions or wishful thinking. And it’s deeply concerning that public figures—many of whom should know better—are treating this like a political win instead of a serious, unfolding situation with consequences we don’t yet understand.

Figures like Tulsi Gabbard and Senator Marco Rubio have publicly praised the mission and echoed the President’s claim of total success—straight out of the morning’s talking points memo. But when facts are still fluid, shouldn’t our leaders model restraint? Shouldn’t they be the first to call for verification, rather than locking in a narrative?

There’s no shame in celebrating strength. But it’s not weakness to ask questions. It’s wisdom.

This isn’t about politics. It’s about preventing war through clarity of information. It’s about ensuring that decisions are made with full understanding—not only by the President, but by Congress, by allies, and by the American people. The more significant the action, the more vital it is that we examine it from every angle.

And this isn’t just abstract. Think about it: if Iran’s program has truly been crippled, that alters the diplomatic landscape dramatically. It may open doors to renewed talks—or provoke retaliation. If the program has only been set back a few months, that’s an entirely different conversation. And if the strike missed the real targets altogether, then we may find ourselves in a far more dangerous position than we were before.

We just don’t know yet. And that’s the point. It’s the point I have regularly tried to make.

Look, I understand how high-stakes decisions must sometimes be made with imperfect information. I’ve seen it. But I also know how easily facts can be shaped into political tools. And if we’ve learned anything over the past several years, it’s that the American public is often asked to accept things at face value—only to find out later that we were missing half the story.

That’s why, as someone who has lived both inside and outside that bubble, I’m urging all of us—left, right, center—to slow down. To ask. To scrutinize. To trust, but verify.

If this mission was as successful as claimed, then we’ll all benefit from the truth confirming it. But if it wasn’t—if vital materials were already moved, if sites were evacuated, or if the damage was exaggerated—then we must know that too. And we must act accordingly.

In times of conflict, our democracy demands diligence. Facts matter more than ever. And questions, even when inconvenient, are not signs of disloyalty—they’re signs of vigilance.

Let’s not rush to paint this as a turning point in history until we know what actually turned.

Because real leadership doesn’t fear scrutiny.

It invites it.
