Everything you wrote is true - god bless you - you are asking for help and I have no $$ to give. I bring up the horrible flood and why so many unnecessarily died but folks just agree and go back to living their lives. I’m an old woman now but not in my heart. Other than talking to folks I don’t know what else to do. This world I was born into in 1945 on the Ides of March is crumbling because of insanity, greed, and fear. Just know my heart and head are with you and when I can I will give what I can. Just don’t stop caring and leading us.

Dear Judith, you can do a lot, and it doesn't require money. You can respond as you have here, with sincerity, but on right-leaning media. You can volunteer for a candidate. You can volunteer to work elections. It's not all footwork; much is brainwork. And working with/for your local election commission is in a neutral environment - no political speech of any kind. It's kind of a vacation from the noise for a few hours.

There are more Maga voters in the rural areas of Texas but there are also Blue voters - just not enough to make a difference.

Expand full comment
Beth Bach's avatar

Not all of us. It’s the same as the ratios who voted for Trump. They’ve got the counties gerrymandered so the rural red votes overrules the more populous city blue votes.

It totally mystifies me! Maybe they think they don't deserve better?

Expand full comment
Erika Fultz's avatar

The massive loss of life is unconscionable, but the negligence of Texas's government isn't surprising. Look at their lack of weatherization and the resulting catastrophic ice storm a few years ago. Or the similar ice storm that happened 10 years before that. Texas government is a complete shitshow and yet voters keep voting the same dumbasses back into office. Make it fucking make sense, Texans. Make it make sense.

Expand full comment
Beth Bach's avatar

Gerrymandered counties to skew elections to red. It’s been happening for decades now. The cities vote blue. The rural areas vote red. More people live in the cities but we keep electing red idiots as a state.

Expand full comment
Erika Fultz's avatar

Like I said, the same dumbasses keep getting elected. Perhaps, this tragedy will get enough people to realize the error of their red voting ways

Expand full comment
Beth Bach's avatar

And like I said, it's not entirely the red voting ways. The gerrymandering makes the blue voting count less. They have it perfectly planned out, and you should see the bizarre maps from this, that there are enough red votes to win more districts. They lump the blue votes into fewer districts so we win by a landslide there but there's not enough districts to make any affect on statewide elections. There's been plenty of court cases over this but they also rule the courts here so I'm not sure how we get out of this nightmare.

Expand full comment
Leigh Gernert's avatar

This is very much a factor in why red states win, When you are allowed to systematically gerrymander areas in your favor, of course you can win. And the red team cleverly knows how to do that. So why is gerrymandering even legal? And who is the watchdog that keeps it fair? That's right - whoever is on the winning team. Gerrymandering is always going to be strategic and politically biased. you're disadvantaged right out of the gate.

Just heard Abbott is calling a special election to deal with things they didn’t finish screwing up during regular session. One of the those things at the request of the Whitehouse is AGAIN redistricting so they can maintain control of Congress in 2026. Redistricting is supposed to happen after the start of each new decade when there’s new census data. They are still litigating the last redrawn districts.

In the 2024 presidential election, Kamala Harris received 4,835,250 votes. This was 42.5% of the total votes in the state. It wasn't enough but it's not nothing. Every Red state has blue voters just like every Blue state has Red voters. Harris lost by 1.5%. It's not that she was rejected. It was a slight margin more voted for Trump - mostly in Blue swing states.

MAGAts still constitute a good proportion of America. And any blind followers with zero critical thinking skills. Thus, they made the 49% of the voting public who voted for tRump to make all this a reality. If you voted for Trump, you voted for all of this. You idiots who now "want their votes back"? Instead of spending time and resources placing blame, why not spend that time and those resources fixing a broken system?

Expand full comment
Marie Carota's avatar

That is exactly right. They were complaining that the media was bugging about blame and I am sure some were but what I hear the media saying is let’s find out what went wrong so you can figure out how to fix it.

Seems like those sirens could have really helped in the flooding areas. With smart electronics once a river got to a certain level the sirens could be tripped down river. It is probably not an area where there is good cell service so the folks can’t depend on phones sending the alarm.

We had all of those civil defense sirens around after the Cuban missile crisis with pretty low tech…. People could hear them at night. Certainly something could be done here. One commentator who was on one of the local boards ten or so years ago said the people voted the sirens down because they were afraid they would go off too often as false alarms. But you know how these local board meetings are…. If the gov. wants to pocket the $ they will start any rumor to not spend it …. like sirens going off as false alarms.
