I have to wonder what my California Boy, LA area, late husband would think of this. He was a Trump supporter and voter, only one in the family.

I blame that stupidity on all the chemo drugs he'd been subjected to. He also really hated HC.

He got really strange, buying up guns he couldn't afford, buying prepackaged meals, survival gear. He thought the country would end up going to war against itself. If it does, it's because he and others put Trump into a position of power allowing him to start one

Punkette's avatar

Hi Cappy. Thanks for sharing that. My ex-hub went through a similar transformation in the mid-90s and sadly our marriage did not survive. To this day, I am perplexed what caused that radical shift (he had always been a progressive Democrat) but he was in the military then, and I saw a similar shift in other active-duty friends after Desert Shield and Storm. It was creepy!

My late husband had been a USAF enlisted retiree. (We met in the AF.)

Ever seen The Manchurian Candidate? Maybe the answer lies in all those mandatory training classes he had to go through and I'm lucky I got out when I did.

Built like a shorter Donald Trump, he certainly never would have met Hegseth’s visual requirements.

I had also been a Republican -for 32 years. With all the garbage going on in the party, I got the feeling they no longer wanted me in it. I liked McCain but Palin was the last straw. I left. Became an Independent for 10 years. When Trump kissed Putin’s ass and denigrated the US to him in Helsinki, 2018, I was so disgusted by him, in the only way I had to protest, I went right down to the local Post Office and got the form to change my party affiliation to Democrat. Still makes me a bit ill to think I'm now a Democrat, but it fits me better.

Punkette's avatar

Thanks, Cappy. My ex was also USAF enlisted. After Desert Shield/Storm, he went TDY to the Middle East several times during the 90s and came back a changed person. And this was before 9/11! Who knows what kind of hateful rhetoric he was exposed to during those months in a tent in the desert. My best to you! P.

History teaches us when we study it and reflect. I remember the

innocuous (was it?) concept of 'Y2K' -

'Will we survive the imminent change from 1999 to 2000?'

Behind much mis/ dis-information dwell those pesky conspiracy theories, whose extreme distortions lead to extremist thinking. The stockpiling out

of fear, the cults that have led to David Koresh and the Branch Dividians,

and similar situations have not evaporated, they have morphed I suppose.

Unfortunately they appeal to our lesser qualities, variations of

'Us v. Them.' Belonging to anything like that can cause people to withdraw from their previous lives and come under the spell of outsized charlatans.

Not meaning to dredge up stuff...

I saw an article that trump wants to lease/sell (I don't remember which) land that is not being used by Pendleton. Supposedly he wants to use the money to build the defense system, the golden web? Whatever he is calling it.

Maybe this is his way of having a ground breaking ceremony.

Susan, remember he said he is not the Democratic president, so why would he have the authority to build something in California? Newsom needs to remind him of that. I'm in California, and for me, Newsom feels more like my President at this time. He has our interest at heart.

Expand full comment
Susan Raquel's avatar

I knew it had "gold" in it lol I don't know if story was true or not; but, it said that initially trump did think that the dome actually was a cover.

Also there was some noise that Canada would have to be involved in some way in order for it to work. The way he has tormented the Canadians I really don't think that they will be very co-operative.

Never thought about the missile causing an earthquake. More likely will start a fire someplace. Southern Cal sure doesn't need any more disasters. I think I saw heavy rainfall predicted and that causes all kinds of problems too.

Of course you know it has to be gold Susan 😂 I'm sure you're right. That's probably exactly how he thinks of.it. like I said, a serving platter.with a big dome over.it.

Do not blame Canada one bit. If they could they should take a chainsaw to the border and let us drift off from them like a glacier.

See, I never thought of fire even though your poor state has had so much suffering and damage. I haven't been to southern calif in about 15 years and always loved it.but last time I really saw how overbuilt LA had become over the years that I had been going, houses hanging over each other looking like they would fall. Humongous monstrosities. I love architecture. Have several.books on LA. No respect for history. Like here in NY. So much should have been landmarked and protected.. The First Amendment under threat in Tennessee

A new law limiting press engagement and warnings to journalists from lawmakers endanger one of the country’s most sacrosanct rights

J. Holly McCall

A new Tennessee “buffer law” could hamper journalists trying to cover the deployment of a federal law enforcement task force to Memphis. (Photo: John Partipilo/Tennessee Lookout)

Arguments about the First Amendment, which, to many, is the most sacrosanct of the articles in the U.S. Constitution Bill of Rights, are a constant in American democracy.

Witness how Tennessee’s new buffer zone law demanding journalists stay 25 feet from law enforcement could trip up reporters in Memphis trying to document federal forces— including agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Department of Homeland Security, FBI, U.S. Marshals and Drug Enforcement Administration plus an extra 300 Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers and members of the Tennessee National Guard — occupying the majority Black city by the hundreds.

In the 2025 legislative session, lawmakers passed the measure to establish a 25-foot “buffer zone” that allows law enforcement officers to order members of the media and public to remain 25 feet away from crime scenes, traffic stops and any “ongoing and immediate threat to public safety.”

The bill, sponsored by House Majority Leader William Lamberth, a Portland Republican, and Republican Sen. Mark Pody of Lebanon, creates a Class B misdemeanor for violations of the buffer zone.

“As you can imagine, journalists appear within 25 feet of law enforcement officers doing their day job every day,” said Grayson Clary, staff attorney with Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press (RCFP,) which provides legal support to journalists.

Similar laws have been challenged in Indiana and Louisiana, where lawyers with the RCFP have prevailed and obtained preliminary injunctions to enforcement of the laws.

The Lookout is part of a coalition of Tennessee media outlets and companies, including the Nashville Banner, Gannett, Scripps Media and TEGNA that has sued the state of Tennessee in federal court over the new law.

They really are doing all they can to hide their behavior.

One or more of the media companies could get these.

The reporters would be 25 feet away and have a great view of what was going on. I'm sure they have cameras that will do a good job at 25 feet.

https://sdexcavator.en.made-in-china.com/product/gTspCVXFErcR/China-Hydraulic-Lifting-Platform-Electric-Climbing-Maintenance-Truck-Scissor-Fork-Full-Selfpropelled-Elevator.html
