People don't want to run for office anymore. It's not the voters who are failures; it's the decent people who refuse to run. I no longer live in NYC but would love to see a liberal Republican get in but oops, they don't make those anymore. Both parties are a plague upon us.

I do miss the old days when we accepted whether Democrat or Republican became President so when Trump came along that turned everything upside down…

The turn started with Reagan in 1980, and the entire toxic Neoliberal movement sprung up in typical DNC Circular Firing Squad fashion as a misunderstanding of why Ronnie Raygun won—because his people pulled some scummy backroom deals with Iran and Nicaragua to make Carter appear ineffectual on foreign policy.

The Democratic Party of today is so corrupted by Big Money Donors that when the late Ross Thomas wrote his last book, AH, TREACHERY!, in 1994? Thomas, who for all his cynicism about Washington, DC and the Permanent Government was a lifelong FDR Liberal Democrat, went out of his way to show just how corrupt the Clintons (called "Arkansas" in the book) were, which helped drive the plot.

Never use a universal analogy for everything and try to understand that at this time we are losing our country so in a state of emergency we vote blue to stop the red this doesn't mean FOREVER it means for now.

I wasn't aware I was using a "universal analogy." I was expressing the thoughts I had, along with many others in NYS, at the time Cuomo the Less was elected.

For me, voting "blue" is forever, and it has been since 1992. Note: I said for me. I don't presume to tell others how to vote.

Your whole "Vote Blue No Matter Who" is why we ended up with "President Donald Trump" in the First Place! The DNC "firewall" of Industrial Middle America, who kept losing jobs due to Clinton Neoliberal policies like trade agreements that encouraged business to "outsource" to cheaper countries with lower wages and fewer health and safety provisions, and in fact ENCOURAGED that kind of behavior, took a look at Bernie Sanders and said, "Hmmm—I'm not sure about him, but I like a lot of what he says." Then they looked at Hillary Rodham Clinton, who offered More of the NeoLib Same that was causing them to suffer, and who worked harder to stop Bernie than she ever did Trump, and went, "Isn't there anybody else?"

Unlike Hillary, Trump blazed through Middle America like Hitler on Crack, holding huge rallies and promising Middle America the Moon. He had no intention of actually doing any of that, and the only reason for the rallies in the first place was to feed his never-satisfied ego, but he knew what buttons to push for working-class voters. Trump made Hillary Rodham Clinton look disconnected, snobbish, and like a total Mean Girl, limiting her General Election campaign to dancing on ELLEN, attending $100K/plate dinners with the oligarchs in New York and Hollywood, talking endlessly about "going toe-to-toe with Putin!" at a point when Putin seemed satisfied with having digested the Crimean Peninsula*, and guesting on SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE. All Hillary had to fight back was...The Steele Dossier, which was discredited almost as soon as it came out!**

Hillary is why The Democratic Firewall came down and voted for Trump. You can blame "Russian disinformation" all you want, but if Donald Trump had run against Bernie Sanders, with the full support of Democratic Party?*** Trump would have been a stain on the ground of his beloved Florida Roach Motel golf course....

____

* I know a lot of you go, "But Hillary was RIGHT!" To which I respond, "Sorry, my crystal ball was out for repairs in 2016—and was it worth it for her to start WWIII just to prove she was 'tougher' than Putin was, which seemed a Very Real Possibility the way she kept going on about it?"

** The Steele Dossier turned out to be like The Killian Documents—which almost certainly told the truth about George W. Bush as a chronically AWOL child of privilege unfit for an officer's uniform in the National Guard, but the document itself wasn't truthful, and Dan Rather and CBS News paid the price.

*** Yes, since you ask? I also believe in The Easter Bunny.

If centrist Democrats hadn’t bashed Bernie Sanders in 2016, we would not be where we are today. The same is true for Zohran Mamdani. THIS IS WHAT THE PEOPLE REALLY WANT!!! Stop force feeding us your corporatist corruption and “Republican Lite” crap: we don’t want it. And we haven’t wanted it for DECADES.

Democratic Socialism RESONATES.

Because it puts the oligarchs and the 1% in their place and gives everyone else a shot at a decent life. It’s not hard to understand.

You are so right!!!! If Dems don’t wake up and go left, we’re gonna keep losing. Embrace the title Democratic Socialism. Define it. Don’t run from it. Be like Zohran and say what you’re for. That’s what matters. The Repubs and moderates already call us progressives socialists and communists.

But we need to get this branded not as going left but as working for the working class. Wanting to feed the hungry, heal the sick, welcome the stranger, make sure everyone has affordable health care and child care (like Canada and all other developed industrialized nations and many developing nations are striving to do!) should not be branded as "leftist" or progressive or liberal. It should be branded as the way good people treat their neighbors and the Republican party platform should be branded as cruelty and money for the rich. Campaigning in the Bible belt should focus on the words/commandments of Jesus maybe without actually quoting Jesus but saying all the good books say feed the hungry, turn the other cheek, no not seek revenge or retribution and do on) and how the Republican platform violates all of them.

In our last Berkeley, CA election a group of young people, with what appeared to be thin experience, won. Oh no, I thought. More shallow thinking coming for us, without the complex analysis required of modern urban problems. Actually, I was completely wrong. We’ve had a refreshing sweep of modernity on issues ranging from mitigating climate change, walking a fair line on Gaza, etc. I realized that these much younger people are living a reality that I don’t understand in the same way. And, I realized that it is their world to try to bend toward justice. And, remarkably, justice is very important to them.

I didn’t mean to make my comment about age. I think Hogg made a serious mistake when he defined an action position around age…as in throwing out the old guys will solve everything. What has happened in Berkeley so far…it could change…is council unanimity in treating our community as a community, reducing factionalism while insisting on needed action, and most remarkably, not trying to please funders. Community above money. What a notion!
