Love them all!!!! I still can't get over the irony of TACO being the acronym for Trump's new nickname. Mexico must be loving this!

I keep thinking of that lame photo of him eating a taco salad during his first campaign, when he said something lame about how he loves Hispanics. https://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/278896-trump-shares-photo-of-him-eating-taco-salad-for-cinco-de-mayo/

Right in point. Anyone who would default to the term тАЬHispanicsтАЭ when the subject is Latinos in our own hemisphere and Mexico or neighbor to the south shows what an ivory tower and out of touch gold escalator riding politician Trump is. Nuanced but telling to anyone paying attention, although MAGA world doesnтАЩt.

Yes, but!

Most of the Venezuelan and Columbian immigrants in my community do not(!) identify as Latino. Same for some Cubans. They identify as Hispanics. Their ancestors came from Spain and nearby European countries. Some draw a very distinct line between their heritage and that of Latinos, who they see as having cultures and heritage dominated by the indigenous cultures grown from the Olmec, Maya, Aztec, and Incan and the many smaller tribes.

TodayтАЩs Hispanics, as a generalization, have remained distinctly separate, with their music, clothing and food still more like SpainтАЩs than, say, MexicoтАЩs. Yes, the Hispanic vs Latino point is one of pride tinged with historical classism racism, much like that of my grandparents who felt superior because of their ~northern~ European roots, but oh oh, not Irish. Smh.

You make good points, thanks. I had never drawn the distinction. So, to clarify, do you see Latinos as Hispanics but not vice versa? Are they culturally/ethnically distinct in a way that garners different labels?

This reminds me of some Fox News coverage during the 1st Trump administration about cutting aid to El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras, in which Fox News incorrectly labeled them graphically as "3 Mexican Countries".

I am one little person, observing through my volunteering to aid new immigrants. I know what box they check for race/ethnicity. These upper income, educated Venezuelans and Colombians checked тАЬOtherтАЭ when Latino was the only choice. So, I would say Hispanics and Latinos are culturally/ethnically different. At least to those Hispanics, itтАЩs not an overlap thing. ItтАЩs not my line to draw, or even see. My Scandinavian and English grandparents did not think of themselves as related to the southern Europeans of the Mediterranean and Baltic regions.

Like I said, itтАЩs a separation in actual (more recent!) heritage and culture. My grandparents held it as an important distinction because to them it signaled some superiority to the Greeks, Italians, and Slavs. I can only suggest by their demeanor that itтАЩs a similar point of pride, right or wrongly placed, that they are Hispanics, not Latinos.
