Trump incited violence on January 6, 2021 . Why wasn’t he charged with anything? Congress was too weak and spineless to impeach. Now our country and democracy are in danger.

Bonnie Lane's avatar

Dear Lonna- I share your frustration but you should recall that Congress did impeach him. When the Senate voted however it was the republicans- led by Mitch the traitor McConnell who argued against it claiming that criminal action would be more appropriate... Yes he should have been prevented from running again and now - with the assistance and support of Putin he is dismantling and destroying our country.

Impeachment is not the same as the pressing of criminal charges. Had the Senate convicted Trump after either impeachment, he would only have been removed from office. He wouldn't have gone to jail.

Yes, Democrats did their part, twice, by lobbing a softball to the senate, but instead, the republican senate balked.

And there’s a legal process. But the GRAND OLD PARTY is long gone. They sold their soul to the devil.

Constitutional Basis:

“Article II, Section 4 defines that the president shall be removed from office upon impeachment and conviction for treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors.

Article I, Section 3 outlines the consequences of impeachment, stating that the judgment shall not extend further than removal from office and disqualification from future federal office.”

“Vice President Sworn In: The Vice President becomes the new president, following the line of succession established in the Twenty-Fifth Amendment.”

“Potential Disqualification: The Senate has the power to vote on a second measure to disqualify the convicted individual from holding any future office of honor, trust, or profit under the United States. This requires a separate vote.”

“Continued Legal Liability: The president remains subject to indictment, trial, judgment, and punishment for any criminal acts committed. A presidential pardon cannot shield an official from the impeachment process.”

And when the republicans baulked that is when they decided it was time to take over because they(Project 2025) saw how spineless the republicans were and could be manipulated. They also realized Trump had a following that could also be manipulated because they were uneducated and also played follow the leader. Trump was just as easily manipulated because of his mental disorders (LOL). Trump also had control of SCOTUS. It all lined up for this take over, now how do we take it back?

Expand full comment
Merry's avatar

And how do we take it back? Well, it certainly would be easier if we don’t actually lose it in the first place. But we’re already pretty far down that path. Which was likely part of the P2025 agenda to implement within the first 6 months. Move fast, break things, create chaos.

IMO Trump is merely a temporary placeholder. A buffoon. And a sick old man who likely won’t live thru his entire term. This whole scheme is being orchestrated and backed financially by high level oligarchs.

The House impeached him for the charges of insurrection, the Senate proceeded with the trial, but was 3 votes short of the 2/3 of the votes needed for his conviction. Now he is punishing Brazil with tariffs for doing the right thing against their former leader, who did what Trump did, costing us the insane prices on beef, coffee, etc. that come from Brazil because of the high tariffs.

And there’s this other little factoid that could be a significant part of trump’s motive…

“1. Venezuela – The World’s [Largest] Oil Reserve Titan”

“Venezuela holds the largest proven crude oil reserves globally, estimated at approximately 303 billion barrels as of 2024. These reserves are predominantly located in the Orinoco Belt, containing extra-heavy crude oil that requires advanced extraction techniques.

Despite its vast reserves, Venezuela’s oil production has faced significant challenges due to economic instability, infrastructure issues, and international sanctions. In 2024, the country’s oil output averaged around 921,000 barrels per day, a modest increase attributed to strategic partnerships and political maneuvers.

The state-owned company, Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A. (PDVSA), manages the nation’s oil resources. However, its operations have been hampered by limited foreign investment and technical expertise. International collaborations, such as those with Chevron, have provided some relief, but the sector’s full potential remains untapped.“

Nothing djt does could possibly surprise me. Many wars have been fought for the control of natural resources, particularly oil, but guised by humanitarian intervention or to fight for democracy.

“Wars with significant connections to oil include World War II, the Iran-Iraq War, the invasion of Kuwait and the First Gulf War, the 2003 Iraq War, and the Chaco War. These conflicts featured battles over oil resources, strategic oil fields, or used oil as a weapon or to advance war efforts, highlighting the crucial role oil has played in global power struggles”

Actually, the House democrats tossed the senate two softballs when they impeached Trump, not just once, but TWICE. But then the republican controlled Senate balked and refused to indict him. If they had taken their oaths to protect the Constitution, convicted him and removed him from office, using the 25th amendment, he would not have been able to run for any political office again.

And now we know the rest of the story…the GRAND OLD PARTY is long gone. They sold their souls to the devil.

“Constitutional Basis:

“Article II, Section 4 defines that the president shall be removed from office upon impeachment and conviction for treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors.

A bill is going to committee in the House making it possible to bring RICO charges for “terrorism” against protesters who don’t support Israel and/or are Democrats. Shoot, I saw this coming last year and the wife and I told everyone to vote to avoid this exact situation. End of November 2024, we began application for our visas to Portugal. Took a bit and was a lot of paperwork, but we got it approved in July. We fly out 10/9. No need being stuck here. They just found 2 men lynched in Mississippi. Funny how that is not all over the news constantly, right? This place is going to get much worse before it ever improves. I hate it, but I just don't see our future here. This nation just does not represent our values anymore. Not sure it ever did.

Last year when Tony Schwartz said, gloomily yet hopefully, that he and his wife could go live with one of their children in Amsterdam, my husband and I were wistful. For a decade we’ve been driving from D.C. the length of Florida (alas) to snowbird in Key West, where we’re renters.

JP4M's avatar

Robert Goldbach, I agree with you that they should uphold the true meaning as our forefathers intended when they wrote the Constitution. We must regain the integrity of its meaning and have each branch of our government protect it, uphold it, and follow it. We need each person in each branch to take the oath seriously and to be responsible to that law of our land while upholding their obligations to represent the constituents at home, the American people.

Rick Green, that is a really good question you asked. Do you ever wonder if each person should be put in a separate room with no access to any help or cheating, and be given a Constitution test, at least at an high school level, followed by a more detailed test of it on a higher level, and possibly a history test after that? Or do you think the feigned ignorance is merely a pretense in order to do whatever they want. Do they think that “We the People” do not know? How pathetic that would be! If the population did not know and stand up for holding each person responsible.

Expand full comment
JP4M's avatar

To clarify, when I suggested, in the comment above, the testing individusls, I was inferring that each person elected to office in our government and who takes the oath to protect and defend the Constitution, should be aware of exactly what is in it. It is their duty. They are required to take the oath, so they must know the details and have access to them for convenient referral.

I just heard Professor HCR say something to the effect of, the way forward is to be very clear about what we want. Listening to the talk on the Bulwark, I understand even more, that general understanding of things isn't always accurate & the meanings of things (like the label 'Conservative') change.
