SPEAKER 3
Look, powerful Democratic governors are going to be one of the critical lines of defense right now against Donald Trump's encroachment. And are we seeing that encroachment? I want to bring in Congresswoman Mikey Sherrill, Congresswoman from New Jersey. Big announcement today. She is running for governor.

Ben Interviews Rep. Mikie Sherrill As She Announces Run for NJ Governor

The congresswoman and Navy veteran discusses Trump’s threats to democracy, her platform for New Jersey, and the urgent need for state-level leadership in an exclusive interview on MTN.

Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ) announced her candidacy for governor of New Jersey earlier today, emphasizing the critical role Democratic governors will play in defending against Donald Trump’s authoritarian ambitions. MeidasTouch host Ben Meiselas had the opportunity to chat with Representative Sherrill shortly after her announcement exclusively on the MeidasTouch Network.

Drawing on her unique background as a Navy helicopter pilot and federal prosecutor, Sherrill offered a stark warning about Trump’s efforts to co-opt the military and undermine democratic values, while presenting a forward-looking vision for her home state. Sherrill criticized Trump’s recent nomination of a Fox News host with limited leadership experience as Secretary of Defense, calling it part of a broader attempt to weaken the military’s independence. “It’s really dangerous,” Sherrill said, noting Trump’s plans to court-martial military leaders who don’t show loyalty to him. “We need great people in our military, but Trump’s agenda is driving some of the best away.”

Turning to her gubernatorial run, Sherrill outlined a platform that combines defending democracy with tackling “kitchen table issues” like housing costs, childcare, and affordable healthcare. “It’s not enough to have a good defense. We need a strong offense to move forward,” she said, adding that Democratic governors are now the “main line of defense” against Trump’s overreach.

We only won blue by 5 points. Can not believe how red NJ has become again. We need a great blue governor because he will come for us. This is going to be horrific 4 yrs & beyond. The working class is going to be destroyed. The SC is on his side now. We need Mikie Sherril & her strength

Can someone please tell me how Trump was even allowed to run after J6? He elicited an attack on our capitol.

Members of congress had a chance to impeach and remove him -- twice. Our reps failed to remove him so here we are.

One thing DJT has done is enlightened us on the problems with our system. That a man like DJT and his friends could even be considered for POTUS... and that wayyyyyy more Americans do not consider white supremacy a deal-breaker for political office. My head is swimming thinking about how naive I have been....

Mikie is my representative!! I adore her, I met her at my job earlier this year, she had a meeting with my CEO. I voted for her 4 times! I would be ecstatic with her a Governor. Maybe I’ll run for her seat.

unfortunately my family and I are Democrats in a red state. We don't have any possible protection like possibly the blue States have.. all we can do is pray and vote in the next midterms.

As long as the electoral college exists, my vote will not count in the red state of Indiana. I would love to see a stop to campaigning as it is today. We need a survey of Americans with policies to see how people feel about the actual policies the candidates support. Only then will we get a president that we want.

Do not ignore south south jersey like everyone does

Expand full comment
Britt's avatar

South Jersey consistently votes red and then wonders why no one cares about them lol.

Expand full comment
Linda Blatnik's avatar

What's to be ignored in South Jersey?

Expand full comment
Michele's avatar

The biggest problem is property taxes, home owners insurance and vehicle insurance.

Expand full comment
Linda Blatnik's avatar

Same in North Jersey.

Home owner and auto insurance rates are the roof! I just switched auto, got better coverage and will be paying a lot less.

Are you enrolled in the property tax rebate program/s? If not, check into them.

Michele's avatar

South Jersey constantly votes red because people feel ignored. There used to be a lot more blue and they feel ignored. No one comes to South Jersey or talks about South Jersey except the right. Even the orange thing went to Wildwood.

Expand full comment
Linda Blatnik's avatar

Instead of waiting for them to come to you, go to them. The democratic candidates never come to North Jersey either; they take us very much for granted. But, I am in groups that send petitions and letters and call all year long. We have watches on legislation and let them know what we want and don't want.

What do you want? The issues you speak of are democrat issues. Talk with your reps, local and federal. It's the issues that count, not the parties.

This is great news. However, it’s the economy and economic outlook that will get her elected.

who's she running against? When?

Expand full comment
Britt's avatar

She’s running against the other democrats at this point. But the republicans as of right now are Jack Ciattarelli, who lost in 2022 and a radio host named Joe Spadea. Republicans are a joke lol

Expand full comment
Michele's avatar

Why go to south Jersey if it constantly votes red you ask..

This is exactly why Dems lose. There are blue in South Jersey and more are turning red because they are ignored by their own party.

Expand full comment
Britt's avatar

Huh?

Expand full comment
Linda Blatnik's avatar

So far, she's running in NJ for Gov in 2025 against 4 other democrats, Mayor of Newark Ras Baraka and

Montclair mayor Sean Spiller. Also, Steve Sweeney and Steven Fulop mayor of Ft. Lee.

So far.
