Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ) announced her candidacy for governor of New Jersey earlier today, emphasizing the critical role Democratic governors will play in defending against Donald Trump’s authoritarian ambitions. MeidasTouch host Ben Meiselas had the opportunity to chat with Representative Sherrill shortly after her announcement exclusively on the MeidasTouch Network.
Drawing on her unique background as a Navy helicopter pilot and federal prosecutor, Sherrill offered a stark warning about Trump’s efforts to co-opt the military and undermine democratic values, while presenting a forward-looking vision for her home state. Sherrill criticized Trump’s recent nomination of a Fox News host with limited leadership experience as Secretary of Defense, calling it part of a broader attempt to weaken the military’s independence. “It’s really dangerous,” Sherrill said, noting Trump’s plans to court-martial military leaders who don’t show loyalty to him. “We need great people in our military, but Trump’s agenda is driving some of the best away.”
Turning to her gubernatorial run, Sherrill outlined a platform that combines defending democracy with tackling “kitchen table issues” like housing costs, childcare, and affordable healthcare. “It’s not enough to have a good defense. We need a strong offense to move forward,” she said, adding that Democratic governors are now the “main line of defense” against Trump’s overreach.
