I walk away in despair because even if I point out the truth they have an excuse. For example: when we talk about how ruinous the tariffs are or I point out how he’s manipulating the market for his buddies (they showed a clip of him with his buddies bragging about how much money they made because of the on again off again tariffs.) I get, “ Don’t worry, Cheryl. It’s just a negotiating tool.”
To me all their excuses for his unlawful activities are rooted in their “willful ignorance”. It is mystifying & horrifying to me.

Cheryl, this is very, very true. It's a strategic error to assume that the average Trump voter drives a beat-up pickup truck and lives in a double-wide. It was a god-awful error on Hillary's part to label his supporters as the deplorables. It alienated both ends of the spectrum and really turned away potential voters.
I've had those conversations as well and heard the excuses, but my style is to listen more like a counselor showing interest, as getting into the mud goes nowhere and I'm genuinely trying to understand their points. I'll even nod in agreement since it might give me a chance to get across an idea for them to think about.
If you take many of the things DJT says, there is often some scintilla of truth to latch onto. The entirety may be batshit crazy, but there's something there. Immigration is a good example. We are (rightfully) hung up on things like humanitarian issues and due process. But there is a truth that the immigration system is broken and allows for abuses. Even if the fix is outrageous, it represents doing something.
