She said I could take guitar lessons while we were there. We accidentally ended up at Johnny Smith's Guitars and because we didn't know who he was and that he was a professional and usually worked with pros, I got to take 6 lessons from him. (He wrote "Walk Don't Run" that was a big hit for The Ventures back in the day.) That Christmas, we went back and he helped pick out the guitar that I now have - and took my Montgomery Ward guitar as a trade in. He was so talented and so kind and genuine. My Gibson guitar is a reminder of a special time and a special person.
My own story is not nearly so exotic. I taught myself how to play at summer camp, because they needed another guitarist to play folk music. I already played piano, so I was able to pick it up. I fell in love with it and told my parents I really wanted one for Christmas. Instead, I got a luggage set. I was ungracious enough to show my disappointment. My parents said I couldn’t pack my clothes in a guitar, to which I responded I couldn’t play a suitcase. Next Christmas, they got me the Gibson classic. The luggage lasted about 15 years.
