People who have actually given over their thinking faculties no longer hear what they may listen to - they hear only what they want to hear. Any lie they hear from their leader is The Truth. It ceases to involve their 'thought process,' since any digestion of data has been done once and for all time - UNTIL (and this does and can happen, which is does, one person at a time) someone gets =a whiff of something not being right, which is to say, 'doubt.' Recovery from being in a cult is very much like any other addiction, beginning with admission to their being a problem, and seeing that they have the wherewithal to solve that, and that any shame they may feel is (for the sake of their recovering) a side issue.

Getting one's mind back is first in this process. And _lots_ of people did buy into the snake-oil liar's Big Fat Lies for years...

JudyC's avatar

Nailed it Richard. Trump supporters have Cult Brain-Damage condition. It's a condition that appears to incurable with no known treatment.

Expand full comment
Richard Waddell's avatar

Cold turkey is the best way, but withdrawl from any addiction takes

courage and support. It is not about intelligence or anything other than

'leaving the cult' or 'quitting drinking/drugs'. There is often lots of baggage, shame being a big one, that can act as an obstacle, but even that is just one more learned habit, and habits can be changed. Holding on to any hate, for any reason, is not a healthy choice, but instead cultivating a simple attitude of forgiveness makes a huge difference. Forgiving of who? Probably just about everyone.

I believe media regulations, specifically Truth in all mass media networks or loss of licensing has become necessary. We also need to repeal Citizens United. The propaganda campaign against truth is the biggest problem with our government. We need to 'promote the General Welfare ' of the people as the Constitution deliniates as one of three reasons for establishment of our government. The other two reasons are 'provide for the common defense' and 'secure the blessings of liberty'.

Our government is infringing on our Liberty, and has not done anything to promote the general welfare of the PEOPLE. In actuality by eliminating the healthcare subsidies this regime is willfully HURTING THE PEOPLE.

Shannon. I said many people were uneducated. I have written in another post that farmers are good business people who understand what they need to make their farm sustainable. Younger farmers are going to post secondary school.

I was raised on a farm in a small community in Saskatchewan. I would never suggest that farmers are stupid. My father only went to Grade 8. He was born in 1918 and died on the eve of his 80th birthday, which fell on Remembrance Day. His twin brother served in WW2 and my Dad had to stay home to look after his parents’s farm. But he read the papers every day, listened to the news and was very knowledgeable in politics. It was vitally important in keeping the farm going. Of course people learned from each other as well. I consider that being educated. Because I feel that way, I was so disappointed that the farmers were a large group who voted for trump. I really didn’t understand it.

But you’re right. The media has been instrumental in getting trump elected, they suffocate the the people with every little thing trump. And if you only watch Fox News, then your vision is certainly distorted.

I built a life with someone over the last 12 years. When Trump came into power, my partner became a part of the Trump cult and still is; he changed so much that it is so disturbing. I’m in my 70s, and can’t get around because of certain disabilities, so that makes things more difficult.

He cannot take on any ideas except those offered by Fox News. I’ve watched him slowly lose the ability to think for himself. I leave the room when he puts it on, or we will fight. I cannot mention Trump without him getting very upset and defending him. As far as he’s concerned, Trump can do no wrong. He has not admitted to all the more recent horrible things that Trump has been doing in this country and abroad, ICE, medical expenses….The horrible treatment of immigrants, etc.; he will not talk about it or admit that these problems exist, or God forbid I insinuate that Trump is behind them. There is no debate or discussion that can happen between us.

At best, we just do not talk about Trump. This has ruined our relationship. Nothing wrong with tearing down the White House according to him! Trump’s a builder he says.

The only thing that made him shut up was that disgusting video of crap falling on New York City demonstrators and poor Harry S. I handed him my phone with the video ready to play and I said “this is what your president thought was a good idea to post. If he could’ve been honest, he would have said how disgusting and insane it was. I could actually see it in his face, but he could never ever say that.

I’m sharing this with you guys just so you know that the sick and damaging person in the White House, is not only what we all see daily, but what’s happening due to the havoc between couples. I wish there was a way to just get away from him, but I don’t think I’ll be able to do it in this lifetime at this age. I hope I live long enough to see things get back to the way they once were, America restored , without the orange cretin. FDT👹

I remind myself that many townspeople gathered together to watch and support vigilantes hanging black people. Some packed picnic baskets and brought their kids. (The pics are online.) They would rather condemn a person of color than to actually find the person who committed the crime. Basically, letting the real perpetrator escape punishment.
